The American localization team absolutely butchered this game. They removed the Buddhist robes and kimonos, and they even called the yakisoba "Spaghetti". Why not just call them "fried noodles"?
i loved this game to death but that pyramid maze stage really tested my frustration levels to the max. many a sms controller was smashed against the wall. i finally got through by getting directions fron the sega power line. yeah i cheated but it was that or my sanity. top game made by the kenseiden guys.
Both Mystic Defender and Spellcaster (the American/European name of this game) were based on the anime Peacock King, whoch explains why they're so similar.
was Kujakuou/Spellcaster based on an anime/manga? or did they make that awesome animation just for this commercial.

My brothers and I spent about a year trying to find our way through the pyramid maze in the game. BOY was I glad when we finally beat it.

I had this game. It seemed to be somewhat of a prelude to Mystic Defender on the Genesis system!

As already mentioned this is the Japanese version of Spell Caster for the Master System, the prequel to Mystic Defender on Genesis.
Also, the game "Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru" aka
"Psychic Killer Taromaru" on Saturn was either a sequel to Mystic Defender or closely related to it.
