I have a PowerWah Boost that I found for 75$ in 1997. Saw Cliff playing a big giant chrome wah and I thought, hey what the heck...Didn't think too much of it at the time. Fastforward to now and I realize this thing has been with me on every single recording session, every show since I got it. I changed the light 3 times, I've reshaped the cardboard parts inside, True bypassed it, and put a great big radio knob on the left so I can use my foot with it. It is my secret weapon and it changed me:)
@jimboob400 I'd bought a "classic"(the new one) last year expecting the same sound as my old one, no such luck. More like a crybaby/morley hybrid to my ear.
My old one used 2 9v batts for 18v power, the new one is only 9v, the 18v version had more of a filter effect than a typical wah sound. I like my new morley though, it has a much fuller sound than my dunlop and is very low noise.
Thanks for the demo. I was looking to see if anyone put up a demo of the rotating wah version. I've had one of those for several years, don't use it, but can't seem to part with it. Though, I probably just haven't met the right buyer. lol It does sound absolutely wicked, but not much more portable than a leslie.
I recently acquired a Morley wah from the Compact range Model CWV (Wah Volyme). And I can’t for the life of me find any “decent” information about it (sound ok though).
Anyhow, grate video as always, one thought though:
Hypothetically wouldn’t you be able to change the Wah range if you could change the intensity of the light coming from the bulb? A brighter light making a more trebally sound?
So when only the fuzz is engaged on my power fuzz the pedal acts as "gate" on letting the amount of fuzz through. On the heel it's clean and the toe it's the full fuzz. Should just be volume in fuzz only mode. Any other tubers get that from theirs? Love this pedal anyway....
3. The transformer turned out to be a noisy intruder. I bought a wall-plug with housing and moved the transformer from the Morley to the wall-plug and added an extra little low voltage connector to the Morley.
4. In the end I didnt't really like the boost: too much signal eating for my taste. I rewired the boost switch
such that it functions as a byepass. The other switch toggles between wah and volume.
2. Mine wasn't functioning reliably, and I didn't have schematics either. (Nor can i read them well). After some hesitation i soldered out all small components (diodes, resisters, capacitors etc), carefully making notes of all component-colors and placements. Took everything to an old electronics store. These guys were very knowledgeable and helped me out finding close replacements for all parts. ($15-20). Soldered them in, and the pedal has been working ever since, sounding like this one.
I got mine (power wah) some 20 years ago for, say $3, a stunt sell. Slept before the shop - was the second to enter the shop - got my vintage Morley)
If I may offer some tips/ideas on repairs en mods:
1. If you have any problems with wah sound range and/or volume(loss), first thing to check is mechanical: make sure the curtain has the right range in opening and closing in relation to the pedal movement range. (Possibly remove smudge from the light)
HOw do you describe your sound with out the wah pedal being switched on? what's the nice effect there? Also, do you know what effects and sounds I'd need to get the same guitar sounds used on Rod Stewart's 1975 Atlantic Crossing album? That'd be a great help!
Hi, there is no effect used when the wah is in bypass. It's just my Strat into a Fender Twin. Sorry, I can't help with the Rod question. I don't know that album. G
Hi, I have a question. My pedal works like a volume pedal when the wah is off (it does even when the fuzz is on). Does yours works the same or mine is broken? I've just bought at some auction. The seller didn't know if it's made that way or not, and I couldn't find anybody who can answer my question.Thanks.
I have little knowledge of these pedals, but I have very good knowledge of electronics... I can repair it myself, but maybe a little help toward the right direction wouldn't hurt. Do you have an idea of what would cause this? There really isn't much to them... Maybe it is just a resistor that has gone up in value because of age? This could be what is adding the high end as well, or at least I am assuming based on its simple schematics. Maybe you know a sit that could guide me?
I don't have any info on this pedal but you could try a Google search for the schematic. Also use your multimeter to check that the transistors are all receiving voltage. Does the falling curtain that covers the bulb work ok? Check all the obvious things 1st. G
There weren't any characters left, but I wanted to say..... Thank you for the reply, and for any help you can give me. Your channel is really just perfect for helping me pick out new (or old I guess) gear. I just picked up an 70's EH Deluxe Electric Mistress, with original wooden box and all documentation, on EBAY for $60.00 US. :)
I have this same solid wah but the different is that I have Sustain and not Fuzz.I bought it 1976 and it's still working.Even the light is original. The pedal movement is very large and the sound is much better than in this video. This is a real classic pedal like Cry Baby or Vox...
Hey graemey, I have this pedal as well. Freakin' rocks. It seemed like your pedal did not have the volume pedal feature. Is that true? Do you know how to disengage this feature? Thanks. You are like The Pusher Man of vintage pedals. I can't get enough. Stay up!
Thanks gra ;), I just got a DOD FX17 wah/volume & Im using it witha boss FZ2 Hyper Fuzz on bass & guitar. Im still messing around with the signal chain but I seem to be getting a nice Cliff Burton thing going on bass with the Fuzz followed by chorus then the wah & then some delay. Do you know if this morley was used by Cliff Burton of Metallica? cheers...
If you have an effects loop, you are best served by putting your actual effect into it. Chorus, delay, faze, etc.... they sound better after the preamp.
@JermsBlues Are you answering the question about the fuzz placement? If so I appreciate the answer any info helps but i was refering to the way the pedal is wired - is the fuzz section before or after the wah section - if I knew i could emulate it with a seperate wah & fuzz (It sounds like it's fuzzed up first then wha'd
The fuzz will always be after the wah, the wah will always be before everything. It is nice to mess around, but after years you realize that the wah likes to see the guitar first, then everything else comes in.
@JermsBlues Cool, thanks for getting back. Yeah that's the way I use mine (dod FX-17 & a boss FZ2 Hyper Fuzz. I find setting it before gives a nice effect or at least use a compressor or some overdrive before the wah to give the signal some punch that can be worked on via the wah.
When you first take the back off the pedal I thought 'oh my god'. I would hate to open a pedal and see all that gubbins! I'm amazed that even 35 years ago pedals contained lightbulbs and delays contained tapes and motors.
cool. I wonder what ever happened to that bass. Does his family have it or was it buried with him. Jason actually has Cliff's Aria Bass (i think, he used it right when he joined the band), and he does have Cliff's wah. It's the same one.
His mother had it hanging in the front room of the family home, I assume it went to his sister after their mother died. Jason was only loaned the bass I believe. Cliff's Aria bass was donated for charity auction by Metallica to auctionnetwork at the end of last year and went for $11,000.
i always wanted one of the 70s Morleys, lol at the professionals theme showing ya age there ;) (keep in mind, that comment is coming from one old git to another lol) where did you get hold of it or have you had it for ages?
You're right about that theme haha! I bought this one almost twenty years ago and it didn't work. I had to get it repaired. I would have paid about a fiver, I think!
Actually I found that were both correct lol. I found that he used the PWF early on, then switched to the wah boost because he started using a second amp (a Sunn coliseum lead) as well as his mesa rig, and just switched between the two amps (probably when Metallica was making more money). His sound was so badass because he had a "post wah distortion" with the PWF and then the Sunn.
thats what i thought he meant at first. buttt..it doesn't have more fuzz than a big muff, and i'm sure this dude wouldn't make that kind of statement, being the big muff fan that he is.
the sustain is better than a big muff though, a tad bit anyway
Can it be used with a bass¿

Just a tip, If anybody out there wants to get Randy Rhoads sound, you have to get the old morley.

He used the russian big muff and the PWF just like this.
rhynocerous988 2 years ago
Power Wah Boost actually. damn i want one
henryjm206 2 years ago
Actually I found that were both correct lol. I found that he used the PWF early on, then switched to the wah boost because he started using a second amp (a Sunn coliseum lead) as well as his mesa rig, and just switched between the two amps (probably when Metallica was making more money). His sound was so badass because he had a "post wah distortion" with the PWF and then the Sunn.

that doesnt have more fuzz than a big muff
jordanfortuner 3 years ago
i think he meant the sustain
Heyyodude893 3 years ago
maby i thought he ment fuzz
jordanfortuner 3 years ago
thats what i thought he meant at first. buttt..it doesn't have more fuzz than a big muff, and i'm sure this dude wouldn't make that kind of statement, being the big muff fan that he is.
the sustain is better than a big muff though, a tad bit anyway
Heyyodude893 3 years ago
The fuzz from this pedal is harsher than a Big Muff and not quite
