Well it has to be Elaine. There are not enough superlatives to describe her performances.

Tempo, pace, rhythm, range, timing, articulation, dynamics, projection, emotion. There are many more I am sure I have missed. She is skilled in many singing attributes.

So many voices from the one person. Makes many singers sound monotonic by comparison. The complexity and emotion that is conveyed is awe inspiring.

Barbara for the studio version, and Celine for the live one (the performance when she is dressed as a cat, not the other one). The second one singing in that video, her voice is too polished for my ears. The other after Celine, her voice is boring, too Broadway.

Well as with anything people have their preferences. For me it is the voice of Elaine Paige with Memory. She also has power, depth of feeling and total command of this character and song. She really is Grizabella when she sings Memory. This song ain't been around for 30 years and covered by 150 plus people without reason. Elaine Paige took it and made it a hit from the moment it debuted in London. It is and will always be one of the most beautiful and moving songs ever written. So enjoy whoever.

There seem to be two opposing rushes to judgement, as it applies to Ms Boyle, the first that she's a mega-talent, the 2nd that she's a contrived mediocrity. I believe she falls somewhere in the middle. I might add, at least as far as this song is concerned, Paige & Buckley far outshine the other 3.

1. Betty Buckley - Listen to the recording, her emotion runs so deep and her voice is just untouchable. When Betty plays Grizabella I see all her sides.

2. Elaine Paige - Very talented woman. No doubt. But I feel that her Grizabella (though very good) was more one-sided then Betty's.

3. BARBWA! - Now I worship and adore Barbra, but she doesn't do my favorite Memory.

4. Celine Dion - One of my favorite artists of all time. AMAZING VOICE. An interesting take on memory.

let me explain. numbers 1-4 all brought something original to the work, and used their instrument (their voice) to convey the emotion in the song. I find Susan Boyle to be tedious. She's got talent but she's not an artist, and frankly I can think of 100 people who can out sing her any day. Take away the forced vibrato and the imitative nature of her singing and come back to me. but for now, i'm not a fan.
