  • I love his hat and, of course his voice!

  • @p2asilva I love his hat too lol. I seriously want one.

  • Ich liebe dich Anne, das ist nur unser Lied.

  • its taken me sixty years to get this,

it dont get better than this ,thanks tom

  • Shame his voice is almost gone. Saw him twice in the '70s, front row once. One of the greatest songwriters of our time. Thanks Tom :).

  • @chaparral66 As a singer, there is nothing more stressful than singing one of his songs righteously. That's just the way the rain falls.

  • @chaparral66 i said the same thing, that it's hard to listen to him live now, it's so gravelly now, and that MAYBE he should work with a voice coach to save what's left of it,and they jumped all over me. "what?!" . oh well. that's what "they" like to do here. It must have been great to have heard him live back then, front row, breathing the smoke from his 4 burning cigs. "kaff!"

  • Hallo uncle Tom...

  • One of the best songs ever by one of the best song writers ever.

  • mymother has always said he reminds her of the cowardly lion from the wizard of oz. i love tom waits lol

  • Whatever, this is nice. I don't think Everything has to be mega esoteric and gut wrenching to be good

  • @cbirch222 i thumbs downed your comment. sorry. won't let me fix it. meant to thumbs up it.

ugly is often very beautiful. good call.

  • Who are the 5 Lost ones.............

  • Never forget: There were MUSICIANS! They BELIEVED in what they did! They experienced their own lyrics, they lived their lives and their music. Nowadays we are far away from that. I cannot relate to music that is made by PR or some "I Like" Lists. And I wish people would start again listening to their hearts.... Thank you Tom for being there, for always being there. Thank you!

  • this guy invented growling?

  • super voice

  • i remember dancing on the beach in some mexican fishing village with a beautiful british woman listening to this song. ah youth.

  • @2008goo Aren't you the lucky one:)

  • my all time favorite get drunk and cry song...this and kentucky ave...

  • one hundred years from now

    we'll all look back

    and rmember being alive along

    with this great American artist

  • @troupesvirtues

I won't be looking back, i'll probably be dead, hundred years is a long time pal

  • I like Mr.Waits (that's not the point) and also know why somebody may doesn't.

But I mostly RESPECT and LOVE people attracted by "unconvenient" things, out of the main strem. Things that others may simply call "strange".

Gentle men who dream above the dullness of life.

Thank you all guys for being here...

  • monster?

  • Tom - sent from somewhere else, thank f

  • Why is everybody who says something against Tom Waits just bad? Everybody should accept, that this is definitely a vocie, that not everyone will like, even Tom Waits knew that.

I also think he's a great musician, but I also have to admit, that I don't like his voice.

But i watched this video, because i was interestet. Just in case anybody would like to say, that i shouldn't watch the video if im not interested

  • suuuuuch an awesome song. Beautiful in a way I can never express.

  • I thought this song was called Waltzing Matilda? Can anyone clarify?

  • @RandomMocker

The name of the song is "Tom Traubert's Blues" - but more commonly known as "Waltzing Matilda"

  • @RandomMocker

Actually, the best possible way to name this song is: Tom Traubert's Blues: (Waltzing Matilda; Four Sheets to the Wind in Copenhagen)

He got the chorus from the Australian folk song. The premise of the song is he was in Copenhagen with some star named Matilda and they got really drunk. Four Sheets to the Wind is an old sailors way of saying really f&%# up. And the Tom Traubert part comes from writing this song, Waits allegedly went to skid row and talked to the people there. :D

  • The entire "Small Change" album is nothing short of opera. I can't name another album so visual.

  • Those lucky kids must have gotten the show of their lives

  • wow must be the irish hes married to leg end any chance of fixin my alternator? brother sylvest

  • If any of these so called popstars around today had a tiny fraction of this man's talent they'd be LUCKY.

This is a life-changingly good song by an absolute GIANT of talent!

    LONG LIVE TOM WAITS!!

  • Epic

  • I will love this song forever.

  • dennomanno: Is his voice not for everyone? Sure. No doubt...but it has it's own charm and is only one aspect of Tom Waits. What's the secret to his longevity? The songs. The guy writes brilliant songs. Look it up. There are quite a few artists who have covered his songs and had big hits with them. And while those songs may sound "sweet", they never seem to match up to the original. He's not for everyone but his talent is undeniable.

  • Waits can do more grace and beauty with 3 and 4 chords than most songwriters can do with their whole repertoire catalog.

That he can accompany them with the voice of a world weary, smokes-too-many- cigarettes lion, expressing a dozen lives worth of experiences from the bad side of the tracks, and still laugh about it all, makes him a songwriter's songwriter. His talent, and his expression of that talent is Olympian in its scale.

  • @dennomanno

He made it this far through sheer talent - something distinctly absent in the majority of acts you probably listen to avidly. And as far as his voice being shit - that is your opinion and your entitled to it. But the longevity of this man's career and the great work he continues to create puts answer to that claim.

  • @dennomanno

    you are a moron.

  • En obras de caridad

  • nuff said

  • Magnificent. Waits' presence within his work is peerless. He lives, breathes and bleeds it.

  • a genius without doubt.

  • Fantastic, soulful, lived in and with feeling....biggest compliment is that Simon Cowell and the other luvvies prob would rate it as unmarketable..........which must be the ultimate compliment LOL

  • @2zorro3 who is simon cowbell???

  • @youtah676

Whats wrong with your opinion? You sound like a DUMBASS !

  • @youtah676 grinn thats in your ears the shit ;-)

  • @youtah676 OMG.... are you 19 and dumb?.... I'll listen to Tom Waits all day long before one of your teeny-hags sweet voice with nothing to say.....

  • Restaurador35: muchas gracias

  • Tom Waits !!!

its not a track - it is Blues !!!

  • Can somebody tell me what does he say in the beginning? I'm not an English speaker. Thanks in advance.

  • @kumgangpoepsa : Hola : dice que van a poner lo mejor por los niños presentes y agradece que hayan pedido que actuasen allí.

  • I first started listening to Tom Waits when I was 16 back in '78 and my friends thought I was nuts. They're all fans today. I always was a pioneer boys!!

  • I'm Japanese but I feel he's my soul singer.

  • Goddammit, Tom finally grew into his chin ! And added another little bittie one right behind it, just for kicks...

  • It was a different time....when singers could be singers, musicians could be musicians, and to an extent your ability determined your following.........no Simon Cowell, no TV vote, Christ that was living!!

  • @2zorro3 it was an honest living. that's why it was so wonderful.

  • shut the f*&$ up you condescending C*&*T.

  • I love Tom Waits, but I think it's a rather tired statement you've made. "Now that's REAL music! Not like you whipper-snappers listen to!" You leave no room to grow...

  • You are correct Napalmdog. Consider me thoroughly admonished on the subject. TW's material only really works for those who have come of age - you are clearly in this class.

  • You, sir, are a Class act.

  • @richeldis4 I'm 21 years old. Some people that are young have experiences that some others will never have in their life that age them internally. Just because it doesn't show on the outside, doesn't mean it's not there.

Hence the reason Tom Waits started doing music at such a young age. He's an old soul, another reason I listen to him - I relate.

  • Bridge School Benefit?

  • A critic once said of Tom Waits' voice that it sounded "like it was soaked in a vat of bourbon, left hanging in the smokehouse for a few months, and then taken outside and run over with a car."

    True indeed!

  • es eso su voz''??????????????????????

  • "preguntó la gogitta sexi"

  • responde pz no ser sarcastico!!!!

  • It is his act. Actually, Tom is quite an asture businessman. Has appeared in in several films.

  • Truly, an amazing songwriter, and performer, who knows his soul.

  • He sings it in such a longing way. I am not familiar with the artist. Why is his voice so raspy?

  • that's what happens when you drink and smoke a ton. But I wouldn't have him any other way

  • As an Australian brought up on Waltzing Matilda I think Tom Waits has done more for the story than any bush balladeer could have - it is about a sheep thief who commits suicide when cornered by the police after all - and some people here still think it should be our national anthem... give me a break!!

  • Tom Waits is a poet!

  • if you actually search this up, watch it, and don't accept it, just shows your deficiency for musical sense. go listen to hannah montana or some pop-shit like that. this is music.

  • I think I just saw the sweetest, most charitable thing I have ever. Watch this and see if you don't know what I'm talking about. Tom Waits is truly the man.

  • didnt know he actually sang it like this

  • This song makes me cry. God bless Tom Waits.

  • @seaotteR79 he would reply "up yours" lol.

watch the british interview, you'll know what i mean [=

This is indeed a very emotional, magical song.

  • @seaotteR79 jep!

  • @seaotteR79 a lot of his songs make me cry !

  • WTF... this is the real deal, I met him and there's not a phony bone in him.

  • hell yeah...i envy you

  • He doesn't put it on, it's his actual voice.

  • why do you ask stupid questions? are you dumb?

  • Now Reno... There's no such thing as stupid questions..

    There ARE inquisitive idiots, however.

  • Beautiful song.

  • He sounds like the cookie monster from sesame street but some how it works, very soulful. I wonder how much of that is a gimick, is his voice really that raspy in real life ?

  • Check out his "Early years 1 & 2" Very different, you'll love it.

  • I bet bet he probabaly has a greatest hits ablum

  • Check out Mr Thom Wei !

    An exceptionnal artist.

  • Incredible!

  • tom 's n°1 as a singer

    tom's top actor

  • what an extroardinary voice wow!

  • What the hell are staceys, anyway?

  • shoes

his shoes are soaked...everything sucks and on top of that, his shoes are wet...

  • Thanks for clearing that one up,pjack!

  • Stacy Adams - Brand of shoe.

  • geebeebee knows not what she speaks of. poor little girl. no culture or creativity. actually comparing tom waits with rod stewart. it is a sad sad day. disregard peepeepee.

  • this is way everyone wants to sing this mans songs yes

  • whith due respect. seems to me like u dont know what u are talking about. this is real art! go look at other live concerts of tom waits u can find on youtube. do u ever see him booed off? no one around here cares about what u would have called this in your younger days. i wanna see YOU standing in front of him, booing him off! tom is an artist from another breed. pure class. when u dont understand this just shows that u have no idea of real art. so dont wonder when people rate down your comment.

  • Mr. Rocket, you need to refine your taste.

If you Tom Waits is a hack and that Rod Stewart is awesome, you are one of the cartoon people.....not real.

  • F me...I didn't even know Rod Stewart sung this...didn't he butcher enough of Tom's songs with Downtown Train. Rod needs to F himself and write his own songs, of which, he, of course, can't. Dude, you couldn't be more clueless. Rod Stewart is one of the biggest hacks in the history of music; Tom Waits is a gem.

  • @geebeebee1 i agree he has murdered some of tom's songs but to say he has written no songs of his own is a total lie..rod is a good singer but i do prefare tom

  • Tom Waits' voice is like a fine wine, it does nothing but mature with age <3

  • a master of words and music

  • CHUIMESOS got it exactly right last year

    genius, genius, genius, genius, genius.

You must stop it, Tommy. I am crying every time I hear this song.

  • what a great thing to do to sing for those poor unfortunate kids. nice one tom. & may god ring joy & happiness to those kids & their families x.

  • "We" are NOT poor and unfortunate, most of "us" leads a pretty good life. It's tough sometimes, yes, but so is your life to, right?

  • only 9thousand views?

  • Toms piano playing works with his songs in the way Bob Dylans Harmonica works with his songs . This is a Genius at work, try to enjoy ...unless you perhaps could do better.

    If so please post.

    Dave

  • is this the original vrsion of this track--so different from rod but what a version!!!!!!!

  • This is not Tom Traubert's Blues, its watlzing matilda

  • no, it's Tom Traubert's Blues. check the LP "Small Change" first track. OK

  • i know i know , my bad

  • genius genius genius genius genius genius genius genius

to violon - you must be a 9 year old kid

he plays piano as a true master which he is - a master of words and music

  • Agreed.

  • Hey bahotheviolon, if you're going to criticize someone's abilities, do it with proper grammer. It should be "he plays the piano very badly...or he's a bad pianist". Anyway, it's good to see him doing an oldie. I didn't think he ever (even though it was back in '99) did any of his oldies.

  • LOL! "Grammar". If you're going to criticize someone's grammar, do it with good spelling! I don't know where he gets the idea that Tom's a bad pianist. This isn't his greatest performance, but I've certainly heard him play pretty impressively at times.

  • he plays the piano very bad,it was a good choice from him to be singer...as a pianist,he could not succeed...but still,he writes very nice songs.Tom Waits is a one,who really has a certain niveau.,a high level.and this speaks for him.

  • baho

how do you play your instrument as you sing your heart out on a song you composed all by yourself??

    None too hot, I'll guess.

    Am I right??

  • 5 stars...

  • Tom's got a heart of Gold

  • One of mr. Waits' greatest songs, and that is truly something. Can't help but love this one.
