Why is Clive James still not on tv, he's a great interviewer, intelligent, witty and most importantly he lets his guests speak. Too many of today's chat show hosts think that because their name is in the title of the show that they're the stars, well your not the guests are
Milligan was/is awesome. Age was never a factor for Spike, except when it meant he couldn't write/perform anymore, then it was a problem. I love Spike and his work in all his 7 ages. When he died, the world lost something dear x
I old my wife I was going to tickle her funny bone once. When we got divorced she told the judge. He used to threaten to hurt me by tickleing my funny bone. She got the house all the kids the and the car. I got a bill for alimony and a summons for domestic abuse.
I love the singer she was the best part of Clive's show.
Getting Spike'sGoons humour has little to do with any generation gap its simply a matter of our sense of humour. We are all unique individuals each having a different sense of fun, what tickles my funny bone might not tickle yours
I've tried listening to The Goon Show a couple of times and didn't really get it but I think maybe that's becuase that humor was aimed at a different generation.
It's now been scientifically proven that old folks progressively lose their sence of humor as they age (this is quite separate from dimentia). So knowing that, it's all the more remarkable that Spike Milligan, even at that age, was still able to tell good unscripted jokes on tap. He must have been truly Amazing when he was younger.
Google bbc "Grumpy old people 'can't help it' " and the first entry should be the report.
Like I said, I meant no critisism of Mr Milligan, quite the opposite in fact; before aging set in and talking to an audience of the same generation he must have been awesome.
As part of the younger generation I don't get a lot of the references in the Goon shows but I still find some parts HILARIOUS. It's a very surreal style of humour. Most people don't get it.
@tangent272 You must be American. I can't sit through an episode of the goon show without practically wetting myself. As for the references, that's easily dealt with by this thing called "History" and studying it. :)
No, Australian, of two English parents who emigrated here in '72 and my Dad's a big fan of The Goon Show so I've made several attempts over the years to connect with the humor but it just doesn't translate.
Most of the humor I watch is British, mostly on YouTube and I enjoy practically all of it, about he only exceptions I've found are Little Britain, The Office and that comedy panel show hosted by Vic Reeves and that other guy.
Like I said, not all humor translates through eras.

As for history, I'll bet my knowledge of history in general and that of your country in particular is far more extensive than yours of my country :)
@tangent272 I didn't get the Goon Show at first when I heard it either. It takes some getting used to. I had to listen to maybe four or five or six episodes before I got it, so I urge you to keep listening and eventually you WILL get it, and love it. It takes time.

Kind of hard to 'puzzle the audience with who Spike is', when his quips have you laughing helplessly.

Apparently his Epitaph on his gravestone is "See? I told you I was sick." Funny to the last breath.

@hsd628 *sigh* It's "I told you I was Ill" and it doesn't as his Irish roots wouldn't alow it, so it's conveerted into Galic.

Where is this scientific proof that "old folks progressively lose their sence [sic] of humor as they age" ?

Fair question; here's the answer.

@tangent272 If the BBC said it then it must be lies.
