  • @Icfgroup Are you a Ham Radio operator?

  • @thekorgboy98 Good question and we sure are Ham Radio folks - the LCF Group is Dave ( Me I do the videos) KK4WW Ham for 59 years, Gaynell my wife KK4WWW & Dee ( our associate ) KG4VMI. You can see some of our ham acitivities here on our channel lcfgroup and play list "Amateur Radio" & "Dominica" . We have operated DX in many countries and have ham license's in 10 or so countries. In 1992 we did major DX expedition to Bangladesh and made about 25,000 contacts. See next comment

  • @thekorgboy98 Our Bangladesh we operated as Dave S21Z & Gaynell S21ZH - You can Google 'S21ZH Bangladesh' and pick up the operation. We also operate every year in Dominica as J79WW, J79WWW , J79VMI & J79USA. We really like Ham activity and have Community ham station N4USA in Floyd Virginia. This is station for ' Foundation for Amateur International Radio Service' FAIRS -The three of us are directors of FAIRS. Well as you see we are hams and think & do ham radio things everyday

  • my dad had one, Steve Jobs HATED these things. After the Apple II came out, he was literally trying to BUY BACK every Apple I that was sold by pretty much giving Apple I owners whatever the hell they wanted in Apple II hardware in a trade for their Apple I...

  • Where is the screen?

  • @TheWhiteNinja100 Good question - I get this all the time - I did not show it as a normal TV set was used at that time and Apple 1 for a display. You most likely know but when you purchased an Apple 1 you only were purchasing a the PC board and had to add - power transformers - keyboard - and display. If you wanted it in a case you had build that as well. Almost the first 50 were sold to Byte Shop - .

  • @TheWhiteNinja100 Byte Shop (Started by Paul Terrel) and I think his company may have had some wooden cases made for the Apple 1. This Apple 1 was purchased by John Birch from Byte Shop and I don't know if he purchased it with case or made his own. However the case is beautiful. I purchased this Apple 1 from John Birch in the late 90's . I would love to ask him more about it however he passed away just a few years ago. I did get some nice documentation from John - Dave KK4WW

  • I'm reading the Steve Jobs biography right now. It's a trip to see inside this computer - in person as it were. Thanks for posting!

  • computers back then were mostly used for word processing in businesses. The Xerox computer was the 1st computer to have a mouse and a screen to represent a full size piece of paper, so what ever you typed on the screen is what you get when you print it.

Eventually apple took the idea of the "mouse" from xerox and used it on their computers but as for IBM they were more towards large businesses because they had more applications like Word, MS-DOS, Basic, Excel and so on.

  • What did people use this computer for back then.

  • People keep saying the apple logo represents the apple that Adam and Eve ate, but the original logo clearly shows Isaac Newton.

  • @BannedUfos I Think you are correct and the Steve's have verified that it is Newton - this came about because Steve Jobs spent time in a group at an Apple orchard in Oregon just before the Apple 1microcomputer designed by Wozniak was on the market.

  • omg this computer had steve jobs in his hands

  • @HoweverFun ya - I am very fortunate to have this computer. This video by the way was used in the BBC Documentary 'Steve Jobs : Billion Dollar Hippy' We got our 15 seconds of fame here . Thanks for the comment. Dave KK4WW Historical Computer Collector & Historian.

  • so they are not handling with care a almost 200 grand computer eeeh?

  • @MultiplyLOL Well I sure take care of mine and use cloth gloves when handling mine - I give much more care the last few years. Also keep mine in bank vault as I don't have any other good secure place to store them. I do hope to have a good place to show them on regular basis in future. I have lots of nice computers in my small public display however. Thanks for comment - hope it helps others - Dave

  • And yet this is still bet than any Android.

  • @SainisoSikh Well not sure of that but Wozniak and his Apple 1 along with Jobs set the digital world on fire and it is still at it today. So sad about Steve Jobs passing- If you want to read a really good book about Steve Jobs - the new one by Walter Isaacson 2011 Simon & Schuster is really a great read - a long read at that -575 pages of small print . Dave KK4WW Historical Computer Collector- Floyd Virginia

  • @SainisoSikh

The Apple 1 did NOT have lower case characters wich the competitors had - the tape loaded real slow compared to the competitors. All in all in was a lame expensive product......

  • @steenjessendk It was not really expensive at the time compared to others microcomputers on the market - You do point out some real limitations and that is why Wozniak started the design of Apple 2 before many Apple 1's were sold - Thanks for comment - Dave

  • @steenjessendk umadbro?

  • @trekker123eski That's a bit of a fail cus i can't thumbs up comments on my iphone or see top comments XD

  • But will it Blend?

  • it's good to know the technology and finition of apple products remains the same 30years later :3

  • @patachu666 Hi I had to look up 'finition' and see it means 'the finish or top coat' - not really sure just what you had in mind here. This Apple in this video is in the wood case , which was not made by Apple but is sure beautiful and I would say the Apple products today are really in great cases and look really great ( my opinion here). The design look was of course all Steve Jobs as he was so good at this and knowing what folks would want. We miss Steve Jobs for many reasons.

  • Saw one of these at the computer history museum in california. A must-visit place for any computer geek.

  • @maxell1221 My wife and I also visited the 'Computer History Museum' in Santa Clara , CA. Great place and other interesting exhibits in that area as well - like the one at Intel.

  • I have 1, well my dad has one.

  • @ExperimentLife Hi great to know someone else with a Apple 1 - Where are you located ? Bob Luther visited me today - he is Apple 1 owner and writing a book about his and other interesting stories. Follow me at and see his photo twitter dot com/apple1computer Thanks Dave Historical Computer Collector in Blue Ridge Mt of Floyd VA

  • xD but im watching this on pc....

  • @trekker123eski Thumbs up if you think Apple fans are sheeple!

  • @newmark2020 Well I think this is a real mixed bag. Steve Jobs was sure not sheeple .

  • Chuck Norris can run Crysis on this.

  • did this computer have a screen?

  • @trekker123eski Hi Thanks for the comment - at this time I am not Apple user but they are great computers - Dave

  • @lcfgroup I was making a parody of ,"Thumbs up if your watching this *in time or on machine*."

  • it looks like your using that computer to make this

  • Really? $666.66?

  • Wood is classy. They should bring it back. I'd love having a wood cell phone and ipad.

  • i heard a facebook pop 0:35

  • 70's was the wood age.

  • @Pagweb Yes it sure was the age of wood - some of the computers of that time were in beautiful wood cases. I just received email from Paul Terrell - founder of the Byte Shop computer stores and his company purchased the first 50 Apple 1's and put some or all in wooded case - this case may be one of his as the fellow I purchased Apple 1 said he bought it at a Byte Shop --- Dave KK4WW Historical Computer Collector in Floyd Virginia

  • @lcfgroup they used to do that with tvs too, now everything is in a cheap plastic case

  • @Gmc42082 You are sure right about that - the beauty of wood is almost lost on products today except special very expensive things. We have some great wood craft folks here in Floyd - some do mostly hand work and some do wonderful things with the machines . We also have some great wood here in this part of Appalachia - like the old Wormy Chestnut - Bird pecked Hickory - native Black Walnut- just do a Google on 'hand made furniture Floyd Virginia' & you will see some of them.

  • @Pagweb

the stone age, the metal age, then the wood age.

  • @herbienbrian2 metal age would be Bronze Age, I think...

  • @herbienbrian2 Unfortunately most of the early microcomputers were in ugly metal - would have been nice to have some bronze among them. There were a number of the early ones put in wood and some were good looking. wood before metal age?

  • @danielpbaker Thank you for sharing - Many of us are very sad.

  • yeah steve jobs is dead, but this was made by steve wozniak you bungholes

  • @DanGilmrtin Yes we all know Wozniak made this and the Apple 2 totally with out help in the circuit design and he is most clever and nice fellow. However many of us are sad to know that Steve Jobs is not with us anymore - Jobs left behind a great wife and children.

  • I have the schematics for the apple 1...

  • @cookiemaster1234 Thank you for the info - I do have original manual with the schematics - some have ask to see them and the hardware so may do some kind of video and show both -- Thanks again - Dave

  • Amazing thanks

  • @mandaltby Thanks for the comment - Dave

  • Here is part of email I just received from 'Paul Terrell' one of the founders of Byte Shop ni 1976

    > > We agreed to the meeting and demonstration and when Steve Jobs came to the Byte Shop Mt. View I told him that I had no interest in buying another hobby computer that was in kit form and had to be soldered, built and tested before anyone could do anything with it. Continued in next post

  • @lcfgroup . I wanted a completely assembled and tested unit that I could sell to the customers of mine that were programmers and had no engineering and assembly experience. I told Steve I would commit to buy 50 of his assembled and tested single board computers and would give him a purchase order from Byte Shop with payment terms cash on delivery for $500 each. With a hand shake, Steve Jobs was out the door and off to start his new company Apple Computer with his friend Steve Wozniak.

    > >

  • @lcfgroup The computer shown in this video could be one of these 50 that Apple made for Byte Shop. Others did make some nice cases to put the Apple 1 board into. I was told by the fellow I purchased 2 of my Apple 1 computers from that he had purchased them from Byte Shop. It is nice to know that Paul Terrell is still here and contributing his stories be part of history. Dave KK4WW Computer Collector

  • where is the monitor :S

  • @MrLjupa Many folks ask where is the monitor. The Apple 1 and other early computers used and ordinary TV for a display. This was at the time low a low resolution device and graphics were very limited however that all that was available for a low cost display. I did not show the TV and perhaps it would have been a good idea. Thanks Dave KK4WW Computer Collector

  • $666.66?

  • @jsj122786 Yes a good many folks have ask about this and Wozniak has responded it was just a convenient mark up to retail price from their wholesale pricing with no other thoughts of about it from the Steve's. Make your own conclusion.

  • how did this thing even worked?

  • @hotxhotguy At the time it was introduced it worked well with several limitations even for that time. You had to add to the Apple 1 computer board a keyboard, power transformer ,and display. Then you could also add a cassette (audio) interface and store and retrieve data from the tape. It was a generally unreliable device but it did work most of the time. The alternative was to type the program in from the keyboard. It was the start of a really great company & so sad now Steve Jobs is gone.

  • @lcfgroup wow...

yah I also miss him.. :(

  • You could trade the Apple 1 in for an Apple 2... can you trade an iPad 1 in for an iPad 2?

  • @MrSpike13 Would not be a very good trade for me - I have lots of Apple 2's but do not have the iPad yet.

  • 6 KB of RAM?

  • @DoomboyProduction It would hold 8KB of RAM

  • There is no screen =(

  • @MissZellers Many folks ask where is the monitor. The Apple 1 and other early computers used and ordinary TV for a display. This was at the time low a low resolution device and graphics were very limited however that all that was available for a low cost display. I did not show the TV and perhaps it would have been a good idea. Thanks Dave KK4WW Computer Collector

  • why sell this for $666.66?

  • @frankyrocksmyrocks Today any sold would be a lot more to serious collectors - the Steves sold their first big sale of 50 or so wholesale for about $500 each and then marked up for their retail purposes the Apple 1 by about 1/3 which is where the $666.66 came from. It is a very curious number however and many have commented on it and maybe the Devil had an something to do with this price.

  • how do you use it

  • @mohamed1466 Good question - for me this only has historical interest and is a museum piece. It is operational and could be used in any application that would use the old 6502 microprocessor chip. This chip is also way out of date however I would not be surprised if some old controller systems are still out in cyber world running applications. I have been a collector of microcomputer memorabilia for over 40 years - before the first commercial microprocessor Intel 4004 lots of museum stuff.

  • @lcfgroup You will find clickable link to ourcyberbusiness-net in the first line of text just below this video. Scroll up to the video and you will find this link.

  • @mohamed1466 Take a look at some of my old computer things at mycyberbusiness-net you will see that I have many systems that are only museum and historical pieces now and not really useful for applications in today's world. I would say however their are several groups that specialize in keeping these old computers running for the pure joy of it. You can find them with a search on Google.

  • So, I can play COD on this thing, right?

  • @Kyosho101

    ahhh Yes?! -.-

  • @optionen100 ??

  • I always find it amazing to know that the 2mm square microcontroller I have right on my desk contains this whole thing, apart from the supply.

  • @HabaneroTck I expect the transistor count in that micro controller is a whole more that all the chips in the Apple !.

  • Hey top rated comments, Jobs didn't design this.. Wozniak did.

  • @caHarkness For sure - Only Wozniak .

  • This should run faster than the PC I juse right now!

  • Will it run WoG 3 ?

  • LOL for $666.66 XD

  • but will it blend?

  • @fazius2009 Well yes - - it would of course depend on what it was blending?? Dave

  • @MonkeyMagic88 wow way to go for top comment noob

  • where is the screen?

  • Thats quite funny, you have a Apple 1 but used Windows Movie Maker.

  • Respond to this video... That was about my 3rd video and made it over 2 years ago -- just moved up to the Cyber Link - Power Director 10 for video editing and I really find it good for me to use. You can see an improvement in my lasted videos - Thanks Dave

  • But can it play crysis?

  • where is the usb port?

  • @LoeserRealty Ya great question - I sure wish one was available for all the years I was teaching Electronics and Instrumentation at Virginia Tech - things are much easier everyday with standards like USB ports - we of course had to use the organic raw ports of 8 bits in and 8 bits out and I know that you are just making a fun joke question - Thanks Dave

  • @LoeserRealty THATS AN ADD ON HAHAHA

  • Is it able to run OSX Lion? or at least Snow Leopard?

  • @asphixmx Good question - I guess some of the young computer geeks could make that happen - but beyond what I could do - Thanks for the comment - Dave

  • I got one like that, like that. No the same.

  • Are you THE David Larsen that co-wrote the Commodore 64 Starter Book?

  • @senorverde09 If you are referring to the 64 book in the Blacksburg Continuing Education Series - We published at Howard W Sams - I was a part of that team.

  • Why not boot it up? >:)

  • @WindowsLover6767 Good idea maybe I will do this sometime.

  • @lcfgroup Make sure you have a "code book" or something like that so you can use it. :)

  • Thats a Micro Computer??......

  • @Melhem97 Yes and it caused a lot of interest at that time and then Woz designed the Apple 2 microcomputer.

  • LOL The ad is an iPhone ad!!

  • @bouchandre What ad are you refering to ?

  • @lcfgroup I meant that the ad next to the video was an iphone ad

  • @lcfgroup I think he was referring to the advert that plays before the video plays (you tube)

  • Love how it's made with wood cause of the 70's.

  • but what did it do?

  • @rockaddict139 Not much but was a big deal in 1976.

  • why did it cost $666.66?

  • Rip Steve, I hope you left more amazing ideas for us to use in the future!

  • @wq1299 Actually he did, they writted in the newspaper that he had more ideas, he even had idea to make TVs, and now he left all of it, Apple company are taking part of it and will make his things that he left :) :)

  • R.I.P steve jobs

  • thank you for sharing, it's very interesting

  • @SkAnK0000 Glad you like it - lots of fun these old computers.

  • Cut my teeth on an Apple IIe !!!

  • wow!

  • @xcvbcxvb I think you like the video - hope so - I am also WOWed by this early computing stuff. Dave

  • is this from the same people that ran that computer shop in floyd back in 2000 or so?

  • @DJMC5ive Hi - No we have never had computer shop in Floyd but know all the folks that did have shop - do you know any of them or have you been in Floyd ? Thank You - DL

  • @lcfgroup I used to drive through floyd on the way to the parkway, the town was very nice.

  • @DJMC5ive Hi I hope you come back and see Floyd once more and stop by our display in the Village Green #8 - Collector Dave

  • I would like to see one of those run with a monitor attached. :) that would be cool. I wonder where someone would get a monitor for one of those computers, back then.

  • @maccollectorZ Hi These just used a regular tv and of course the resolution was very poor but it did work. It would be easy to put an old one on. I have plenty of them - a lot of early monitors and some of them were just special tv sets. The Radio Shack TRS-80 model one used a modified tv with just the video part - the rf unit was not used or even in the monitor.

  • I enjoyed the video :) QC

  • @Quaaludedude714 Thanks for the nice comment - You can see my Apple 1 computers on the Apple 1 registry by Willegal and the are listed under my LCF Group name. Dave

  • Thanks for demonstrating a rarity in computer hardware. Seeing the Apple I makes me wish there were more computers with a wooden case.

  • @BLUamnEsiac Hi Glad you enjoyed the video - I am not sure if the original owner john Burch made this case - I think so as he told me he purchased the Apple 1 board from the two Steve's at a hobby computer meeting. A few were purchased by a computer store and put in wooden boxes. John passed on last year and I was hoping to ask him a few more questions about this machine. I assume he made the case and it is beautiful. Are you a collector of this old stuff? and where are you? Thanks Dave

  • absolutely fantastic thanks for sharing!!!

  • @homebuiltindoorplane Thank you for the nice comment - This was one of the first video I made over 2.5 years ago. It does tell a good story however and still gets 100 to 200 views everyday. I have been serious collector for more than 40 years and just have set up small display in one of my office areas of about 400 items. You will find it here on my channel. Dave

  • no monitor? why?

  • @ReddoFreddo I did not show monitor - one just used a regular TV and it was very low resolution but all that was available at the time. By the way what is your real age - I doubt you profile of 107 ?

  • @lcfgroup Im not really 107 im just some teenager. But why would you want to know?

    Thanks for the answer.

  • @ReddoFreddo Thanks for the reply - sometimes when folks put in misleading info they spammers just glad to know you are a teenager - glad you have looked at my videos. I am heading home from our mission trip to Dominica tomorrow - you can see some of the videos I did here on my channel just go to playlist and look at the Dominica list.

  • Wow a wooden ¨UniBody¨ How revolutionary!

  • @CelineVision Don't who made the cabinet but it is very nice. I think the fellow I bought it from must have made as he told me he purchased it direct from the Steves at a computer meeting - he name is John Burch - I tried to contact him recently and found that he passed away last year - I really would liked to have had another chance to talk about his purchase of the Apple 1 - I acquired it in the 90's - Dave

  • @lcfgroup Thats very sad to hear indeed. He must have had a lot of talent to make such a crafty computer box.. It looks well smooth.. Kudos for him!

  • @CelineVision Yes it is very nicely built and the best I have seen from all the photos on line of the Apple 1's in a case. I am sure pleasedto have been able to acquire this machine - Dave

  • IF WE KILL THE HEART THEN ALL OTHER MACS WILL DIE! :D

  • i wonder if you can put linux on that...

  • @313hummer memory to limiting - for linux - lucky to get any software to run

  • @lcfgroup lol..i cant believe this used to be high tech :o

  • @313hummer This was 37 years ago and looking backwards using Moore's law ' a doubling of technology every 18 months' it was great because no one had their own computer and with it was possible. Their were some before like the Mark -8 , Mitts 8800 and few others but the price to do any real computing was still out of reach for the individual person. The Apple 1 was still hard to use as it was not a working system with out adding - power supply- keyboard and TV monitor.

  • @313hummer As soon as the Apple 1 was in production Steve Wozniak realized the limitation and designed the Apple 2 which was plug and play ready and introduced in 1977 along with 2 other plug and play computers - The Pet Commodore and the Radio Shack TRS - 80 model 1. The TRS- 80 was known as Trash 80 however thousands were sold and many many folks were now using computers in the late 70's. In 1981 the IBM PC came on the market and the explosion of home or personal computing began in full.

  • @313hummer By the way just looking back using Moore's law - the Apple 1 sold for more than $600 in 1976 - a lot of money in those days - and now look at the cost of a good utility computer lap top or desk top for $500 to $600. Compare - speed -size of memory - hard drive - monitor - loaded software. Basically the Apple 1 equals about zero compared to the computer of today.

  • @313hummer one more comment - from the Apple 1 to today - the Apple Computer Company is the second largest company in the world based on calculated value of outstanding stock and has $76 billion in cash - I am not saying this is good or bad just that all started with the Apple 1.

  • @lcfgroup this is how all the major OS companys started out..windows mac and linux haha..not all on the apple one..but on old terminal computers

  • We are in the Appalachian Music community of Floyd Virginia - I am also making a small museum display of some of my computers available to the public in the Village Green. We are on the "Blue Ridge Parkway" & " The Crooked Road - Virginia's Heritage Music Trail" . A lot of good things here - drop in and see us sometime. Also if you are biker this is a big stop over for riders on the Blue Ridge Parkway - Dave

  • monitor is missing?

  • @gocountry1391 Yes a TV was used for monitor.

  • This video is one of our Apple 1 Microcomputers - you can see all 4 in our LCF Group collection at Mike Willegal's ' Apple 1 Registry ' - Folks ask how did you ever get 4 Apple 1's - short answer - I have been involved in teaching, using, collecting & writing about computers at Virginia Tech & other places for over 54 years - started at Remington Rand Univac company in 1967 - I have advertised in various trade magazines ' wanted pre1980 microcomputers for historical collection' for past 40 yrs

  • See (4) Apple 1 microcomputers in LCF Group collection at Apple 1 Registry willegal.net/appleii/apple1-originals.htm

  • What's really funny is that this might be where it started for Apple, but it would never have happened without Commodore, which owned MOS which produced the CPU for the things .)

  • @DusteDdekay Yes the sequence of many creations or inventions are dependent on so many things being in place at the right time. Wozniak used the 6502 because it was relatively cheap and as you say this made it possible. I just heard that Apple Company is now the largest valued stock company in the world - boy that is something to have started with the 6502 microprocessor chip in an Apple 1 -1966.

  • @lcfgroup Not 1976?

  • no monitor?

  • THIS IS WHERE IT ALL BEGAIN

  • @9521johnnyboy Thank you for the comment - this is sure is where Apple Co, started - These were very interesting times - I was teaching 'Instrumentation & Automation' at Virginia Tech at that time. I have been a serious computer collector for 40 or more years. You can follow at twitter-com/computerhobby

  • how much V is that

  • Interestingly, Steve Wozniak received chips, to make science projects at school, from a neighbor that he did yard work for. The neighbor was short of money at the time and would rather give Steve some chips instead. Of course, being the nerd that he was, he readily accepted the chips and started making something out of them. True story.

  • @1stPlaceDirector Hi This is interesting - I bet their are a lot of interesting bits out their about both Steve's at Apple . Where did you find this information ? Thank you for posting this. Dave

  • @lcfgroup Hi Icfgroup. I do a lot of research on Apple as part of my MBA program. I'm also a collector of vintage Apple memorabilia. Researching all of this stuff causes me to run into a lot of little tidbits of interesting information along the way, as you might imagine, because the "Woz" has done a lot of interviews over the years and he also posts occasionally for Q & A sessions over the web. You probably know that he is very active with his local school district too, advising students, etc.

  • @1stPlaceDirector Hi This is very interesting - yes I know "Woz" is active and actually full of humor. I have several videos on my computer play list this video is on with him doing his thing - one of the more recent was him telling his story of being invited to the Chistie's auction and attending at the last minute - Bruce Damer"s Digibarn posted it. I have had a bit of email dialog with him and his wife - very nice folks.

  • @lcfgroup Interestingly, I found out about this information while I was researching what happened to him when he left Apple and started a company called 'Cloud 9' that made the first user-programmable universal remote control device for sale to the public. This was back in 1985, when there was no such thing. Steve Wozniak got frustrated while at home with his many remote controlled devices, having to fumble with multiple controllers. He came up with one remote to control everything-the Cloud 9.

  • @1stPlaceDirector I specially like Steve's book "IWoz" he tells many stories in it and one about Adam Schoolsky and the Zaltair hoax. I purchased an Apple 1 from Adam and he told me about his working with Steve and pulling off the hoax at the first West Coast Computer Faire in 1976 - Steve talks about that in his book and did confirm to me in email that he did these things with Adam. I have a video about this Apple 1 and the hoax on my channel. Good luck with the MBA - nice to hear from you,

  • same year Commodore PET was made.

  • What did it do how do you use it

  • @iPadmackid12 Hi Thank you - your question is a good one and of course by today's standards it did not do much and only had simple version of Basic. The Basic was a version written by the designer Steve Wozniak. It could run programs that run on the 6502 microprocessor if they would run in the 8kbytes of memory and you could load the program in the computer. I a few of the Apple 1's did end up being used as controllers in a process. It was a great machine at the time. Read the comments below.

  • @iPadmackid12 Steve Wozniak the designer did a great job of designing the computer with a minimum of components. I believer he was the sole designer for this computer and the original Apple 2. Believe me in 1976 this was a big event and of course the Apple 2 gave the Apple Company its start. As of today Steve Wozniak is still enjoying life and a really popular fellow as you can see from all the YouTube videos and Steve Jobs has been managing Apple Co. but is on leave now and not well.
