One of my favorites and I loved the fact Mercury finally got out a single where she wasn't harmonizing with herself. The disk jockeys loved it and played it but the public just didn't respond, maybe because the song was too mature in Lesley terms.
This was/is my all-time favorite Leslie Gore recording. I was rather surprised when she announced, in 2005, that her sexual orientation is lesbian but certainly that takes nothing away from the upbeat and enjoyable music she has always been known for.
fanofoldtv: Do you have a copy of Lesley's unreleased Christmas cd sampler? It includes If Every Night Were Christmas Eve, Winter Wonderland, Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, Jingle Bell Rock, My Christmas Party.
lol that's the style of dress we wore in the 60's- it was called an Empire style. you had to be thin to wear it because it cut you under the bust line and you looked pregnant if you were heavy set. we loved it!!
Spring, '63, " it's My Party", to Winter, '66/67, for " California Nights"; I have everything lesley did, & her music will never grow old; it is indeed, Forever. Wolfsky9
Totally agree with you Wolsky9....Lesley's music will never grow old! I, too, have everything Lesley recorded. Have you heard Lesley's Christmas songs from her unreleased CD Sampler: Gift Wrapped? They sound fantastic!
This was her first single, as I remember, without her voice being multi-tracked. And much more adult material for her. A great record and the disc jockeys gave it plenty of spin. She continued to grow and do more and more unusual material successfully, culminating in "California Nights" and "Summer and Sandy" two years later.
What a sweetie. She still has a website and does limited appearances. She was always one of my very favorites dating back to It's My Party in 1964. This particular recording was, for all intents and purposes, her last significant single release ~ I played this song a million times on 45RPM. Hearing this reminds me of such a wonderul & carefree time in my life ~ long live Leslie Gore!
All of My Life was released March 1965 on Mercury Records. It's Billboard chart position was #71. It is featured on the original The Golden Hits of Lesley Gore, released July 1965.
I love this song, and all of her songs she recorded in the '60s. I have the five-CD set of all of her recordings on Mercury Records during the 1960s, including her big hits and her versions of Pop and Jazz standards. You got to check out her 1963 version of MISTY.
What a GEM. Always liked this ballad and it should have been a big hit due to the great vocal and song. However putting it in time perspective, Petula Clark was HOGGING the airwaves and world stage at the time, and this song was unfortunately buried under the "Downtown" rubble. The British Invasion had its cruel side.
"Downtown" isn't rubble. The multi-million selling song, sung in 4 languages and going to No.1 in 15 countries, was Pet's 1st of 15 hits to make the US Top 40 in just over 3 years. For 20 years she was the only female singer to have her first 2 singles make the Top 3, "I Know a Place" being her 2nd. Looking back, Leslie had 2 REALLY big years,
63 & 64, Pet had 65 & 66, and then it was Dionne Warwick's turn. So don't slag Pet or I'll have to get sarcastic about how dated "It's My Party" sounds
No need to be so defensive...I too liked Pet Clark;I meant no insult to her,I meant that "All My Life" was completely "buried" by tge weight of "Downtown's" popularity.
I myself was one of those that flipped over "Downtown" and bought the 45. It was a new voice, a great song and the Brits dominated the charts. You are right,by 1965 Lesley's star was waning, but she still managed a couple of gems. In retrospect, I favor Lesley, her songs captured a teenage innocence that is now totally gone and are iconic of that wonderful era.
Great News for Lesley Gore Fans! Just received news that Lesley is going to record a "live" album this year. They are trying to decided what venue they are going to record it at.
Absolutely terrific! I always loved this song on her original "Greatest Hits" album, and always wondered why it hadn't been more of a hit! Forty-four years later, I'm still wondering why it didn't sell as well as her other songs. An absolutely song and a terrific performance!
One of the few times Lesley was not doubletracked vocally at that point. The material represented an attempt to reposition her more as an adult performer or more serious material. The disc jockeys loved it and played it but it didn't catch the public fancy as much as anticipated.
Thank you thank you thank you. The clip is as awesome as I remember it. Actually, the two Shindig clips you posted remind me of exactly why I fell in love with Lesley Gore's voice and performing style all those years ago. And, no, it had nothing to do with the outfits.
