thanks for posting this and the information. I 've watched this movie countless times and never knew the dark policeman in tophat was Varese. I knew he was in this movie in the flashback sequence. I guess I didn't pay that good of attention.
It's a reassembled tune made (by me) with mixed episodes of Amériques first version (1918-21), recorded by R. Chailly, Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Decca, 1998. Varèse "The Complete Works".
Thanks for your appreciation. The first source of the discovery is the important biography written by Varèse's wife Louise: A Looking-Glass Diary 1883-1928, New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 1972, p. 151. In my opinion there is another movie with Varèse actor titled "Away Goes Prudence"(1920) by Robertson, with Billie Burke. I think there is not home video version of this film. Ciao. Bep Scuri.
Yeah, I read the Louise Varese biography a years ago and I vaguely remember a mention of the old man having been in some film, but I thought that it was lost.
Great, great find, chief! Bravo! If you manage to get the other one, by all means post it. This is just too good! The profile view of Varese toward the end of this clip is very similar to the steel pen drawing by Frank Stella (I think it was by Stella, anyway). Also, Varese putting poison on the guy's drink is just too funny! Great!
Wow! Thank you! Incredible.

BTW, you're choice of the original version of Ameriques was clever, as it's contemporary with this film.
