  • I watched this once ago. I thought it was hilarious! I still think it's great!! I guess I didn't comment the last time. ;)

  • entertaining, good stuff...do you think its worth getting flatwounds for a fretless acoustic bass? I have a tanglewood fretless model

  • @DRVII - Thanks! If you want something closer to an upright bass sound, definitely go with flatwounds. Other benefits: less likely t o scratch the fingerboard (major factor w/ that lovely inlay on the Dragonfly); easier on fingertips than roundwounds, especially if you do a lot of slides.

Rounds have more edge on attack and work better than flats if you use a pick. They also tend to ring brighter and have a bit more acoustic volume. It comes down to personal taste in both feel and sound.

  • It almost sounds like a guitarron.

  • Yep. Same basic concept - a fretless guitar with flatwound strings. In fact, according to Wiki, "The guitarrón was the inspiration behind Ernie Ball's development of the first modern acoustic bass guitar, released on the market in 1972." (But another Wiki page mentions acoustic bass guitars in the 1950s and Ernie Ball's models in the 1960s.) The guitarrón's larger body gives it more volume than my Draqgonfly, but "that's why Muddy Waters invented 'lectricity!"

  • Awesome man. Your lucky you got that Dragonfly fretless. They only make them fretted now. Keep up the awesome work!

  • The Song Sounds Just like A Lib, must be his Lib Song. Hunting and Fishing is the way of life. Hunt it kill it, fish catch it, and cook it and enjoy the tasty food.

  • Digging that bass Robert!! Cool song! Really made me smile:) You did a great job with it too!!

  • What string gauge?

  • Good question - I had to dig out my spare set to see. On this bass:

    E- 115

    A- 100

    D- 75

    G- 65

    C- 50

I also use Rotosound TruBass 88s on my 5-string Epiphone El Capitan, but instead of the high "C", it has a 135-gauge low "B".

  • Cool song and great performing! ;)

  • Thanks, Karen!

  • It is a cool song, but I didn't write it - that kudo goes to Aussie bloke Tom Morgan, from the band Smudge. Later Evan Dando covered it w/ The Lemonheads.

Love the TruBass! - on acoustic fretless, they have a nice "upright" sound. They have a metal core (probably "monel"). From Rotosound site: "Super smooth with ultra low tension transforms any electric bass into a jazzy upright sound. Great on a fretless bass. Also works well with any kind of jazz, fusion, dub and reggae styles."

  • cool song, man. you're a really good songwriter =)

hey i was thinking of buying a set of trubass strings, but what are they like? and do they have a magnetic cores to work with regular pickups? thanks

  • funny little ditty and commentary, well done Mr. Harsch! I like your bass ... coated strings and all... :P

  • Thanks, man! Not my best singing, but I just wanted to do this while I had stubble & fresh tree.

  • Cleverly put together!!!!Hahahhaha.

You're a true artist, seeing connections!

Very cute and I'm sure there are those 'outdoor' types. Hahahaha Love it!!!!

  • Thank you, Diana! I was in the midst of a 560-mile drive, thinking about getting a Christmas tree & scratching my stubbly face, when the idea occurred to me.

  • btw, Those are real ads I'm reading & all from one issue! The one inaccuracy is where I said "fly-fishing". I had mis-read the text (old contact lenses). The lady actually enjoys "flying, skiing, sailing & surfing".

    ;-)

  • That was fun Robert, I really liked the intro and your bass playing, Glad I subbed!

    Rick
