I was thinking the same thing.

It'd be easier to hook the iPod headphone output to a weak AM transmitter (a kit of which is also sold by Radio Shack), then just tune your radio to the preselected station...and listen to retro monaural sound.

You wouldn't have to damage what might be a valuable vintage transistor radio.
