The riff they're playing is a little melody at the very end of "Heard 'Em Say". But Kanye may have sampled that from somewhere...

Kanye sampled the riff from Maroon 5. 'Nothing Lasts Forever' was written before Heard 'Em Say and THEN Kanye asked Adam (= singer from Maroon 5) to make a song (Heard 'Em Say) and Adam used that melody on this song as well :)

@musicisajourney Actually no, Kanye came up with Hear 'Em Say first and met Adam on a plane. They liked eachother's stuff and Kanye got in contact with him later and asked him to do some vocals on a song he was doing. Then after the song was finished Adam and Maroon 5 liked the lines from Heard 'Em Say and made Nothing Lasts Forever. Kanye actually produced it himself and the only song it contains anything from is "someone that I used to love" by Natalie Cole. This was just a live remix.
