  • They should show it in revers ha. Ah no its a great film.

  • bollocks to any theories (joking or otherwise) that a kick in the testicles is more painful than this. jesus, a man taking a 10 ton dump is less painful!!!

  • I found this terribly hard to masturbate to.

  • Omg....this must hurt alot...i even felt the pain and im a guy!!!

  • i am pregant with my first son so i dont now if that will hurt me

  • wow that was amazing <3 very beautiful

  • Adore.

  • this is actually kinda beautiful

  • @LamphierN NOT!

...but the flick's editing is genius

  • wow gross!

  • @fuckgoblin How is giving birth to a child gross? It's the same way you came out.......And this film was revolutionary when it came out

  • @sukoshineko because it is. there is nothing beautiful about seeing blood & body fluids coming out of your body and in some cases piss & fecal matter. if you think thats a beautiful sight then u need help. besides i came out via c-section not through the cooch

  • @xXLikeAbosSXx09 i was a c section 2 my twin and i

  • @xXLikeAbosSXx09 that really hurt

  • watch this while listening to "disc wars" from the tron legacy soundtrack. It's still a disgusting video, but at least that is a kick ass song.

  • oh my fucking god.

  • ........ummmm ......eerrrrr...... what?!?

  • i'm actually looking for the film

where they are measuring a flat

window frame with a 30 cm ruler

but they keep getting different lengths

oh and the uk avant garde film where

a man just waters his lawn

  • i'm actually looking for the film

where they are measuring a flat

window frame with a 30 cm ruler

but they keep getting different lengths

  • this movie was shown in my media arts class. someone fainted. good movie though.

  • @misscarmengunn Was that in Tilburg about 10 years ago? Cause I watched it in a university film course (on a cinema screen!) and sure enough... someone got some kind of epileptic attack and had to be removed.

  • This is amazing! It really makes the viewer feel what is going on. I'm going to give birth in about 2.5wks and I found this inspirational.. Labor can be beautiful.. In all it's grossness and pain.

  • @kirsplat--my wife had our 3 kids at home without drugs of any sort. this film (back when i first saw it) may have inspired me to go for it. however you decide to have your child, good luck! it is an amazing, very beautiful adventure!

  • as a man, i feel like i have to take a dump now.

  • WOW...awsome!!!! sheer awsomeness! i never got to have a mirror when i gave birth to my babies but my husband said this is exactly what it looks like! im glad i watched this! what a brave and wonderful mother! congrats! <3

  • the reason they got to film this was because they both (as a couple) wanted her to give birth at home, however they had no money so they decided to get sponsors for doctors by saying it would be for the arts... This explanation does not necessarily mean she/they were brave, I think they just wanted to follow their dream through Art..

  • in reply to u i say the being 'brave' comment i made is for natural childbirth not film art and all the other jargan! i dont see any pain relife or epidural near her thus i assume it was natural childbirth and being there 2 times before myself it is brave to go pain reliefe free and not all women can do this.

  • it was a simple misunderstanding, i'm truly sorry, i've never been through giving birth myself but you're right we don't see any epidural or whatsoever in the video so yes, i don't think i would personally go through this with no pain relief, but i would contribute for the arts in any way i can

  • no worries!

  • i'll probably never get the image of the placenta out of my head for the rest of my life...that's film school for ya..

  • Good acting.

  • No sound ,but I could swear I heard screaming. Amazing.

  • then there is the baby held by her heels, and she's crying, and I'm saying, "Baby, baby," over and over, and Stan is laughing and covered with sweat, and the placenta is born, and the doctor and nurse do this and that to the baby, while I take some pictures of Stan because he is so beautiful, and then they all have a drink, but I am quite drunk, and I eat a sandwich, and the baby is in the cradle and asleep, and then we were left alone and happiness everywhere-----jane brakhage, "The Birth Film"

  • OMG!!! is this really how you give birth?? waahh. i dont wanna give birth anymore?!?!?!! im just gonna adopt a child.. hahaha..

  • lol my sister said the same...she said if you want to give birth don't watch this :D

  • Can't believe I've watched this twice now, bloody avant-garde essay.

  • @eeb101 Me too!

  • @eeb101 me too....

  • @eeb101 3 years ago someone was here for the same reason i am here now, i feel renewed strength.

  • the second part is disgusting

  • dogadov brakhage is famous for his SILENT films haha.

  • That was a beautiful stark memoir.

  • does it have sound?

  • I have this on dvd and I watched it last night.

I had a weird dream where I baked a cake when I went to sleep.

  • Hmmmm bun in the oven??????

  • ohhh! beautiful // qué maravilla,

  • 0.o thats it im never gonna give birth if this is a vid of the birth and im already freaked out then what about when i go through the real thing? adopting is FINE with me...

  • disturbing yet rewarding

  • what was that white stuff around her vagina? was it like lotion or lubrication stuff? or was it natural?

  • i thinck it was natural caused by the baby to help itt get out. Not sure though

  • That "white stuff" you're seeing seems to be just to be the reflection of light off of her wet skin. That's all.

  • I'm not sure. It could have been an effect by the filmaker. More likely it was something the doctor used to stretch and sooth the perineum or cleanse the area. But I'm not positive on that.

  • Looks like many people (women?) who have commented so far see this as beautiful. "Beauty" is the last word that comes to my mind. More like graphic and messy. Yeah, I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder and all that. I just don't think everything natural is necessarily beautiful.

  • hermoso

  • this was one of his early works

  • beautiful

  • His best organic work.

  • that looked soo painful

  • GNARLY

  • thank you Stan Brakhage for showing us how fragil and beautiful creatures we are - your work lives today in our collective memory and the messages you sent about the miracle of life is more understood and respected by millions of people who can see what i see here! the world is changing yes and moving into the light and love! :-)

  • Great film making. So poetic.

  • yeah, absolutely! yet more explicit than i thought!

  • Beautiful. Brutal, real, but poetry. I'm 22 and in a committed, serious relationship. We plan on having children someday, perhaps within the next few years. I also want a home birth (or in a birthing center). I'm terrified, but I want it so bad. This film only amplified those emotions. Someday, when the time comes, I will show my boyfriend this since lamaze videos could sometimes be traumatic and just without much emotion, I hear. THIS should replace any and all films taught on birth.

  • Thanks for you unwelcome opinion of me, phille. I was complimenting a film and explaining how it affected me. Sorry if empathy isn't your thing. Wait, why should *I* apologize? Go watch some crap Judd Apatow film.

  • Don't worry about that guy, or others who post idiotic comments. You're obviously a sensitive person and when you do have a child I think you will be an excellent mother. It's natural to feel frightened, etc, but remember - this has been happening for thousands of years. Don't be afraid.

  • Fucking great. This video contains more emotion and passion than 99% of modern theatrical releases.

  • Great

  • you are not seeing the full film here. google the film title and then download the film off of google's player. then you'll see the point.

  • This is a real good peice here. but I dont really get the point of it could you help me with that. Theres a wimdow a man women witch is giving birth. I just wandering where these things tie in with the clip. Onece again its well done. Just need to know the point

  • yo, there's a man and a woman, then a window between 'em, then the water filling the gap, then their son...there's a lot of light, that quite seems turning to red blood. the point? maybe creation and death, myth and reality. life and art...

well, anyway, I just love this.
