one problem with Debra's view: Republicans only became small government people in advocacy of big business in the 1920s and 30s. Their orgins were in the Whig party. Whigs collapsed and essentially renamed labeled itself Republican. I saw some realtor arguing that you'll be paying $15,000 sales tax when you buy your house. Misinformation. I have already spent more than $45K on property taxes this past nine years.

Why can't we trust the private sector to provide for our children's education? Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Norte Dame, Duke, et al, are private educational institutions. The State can provide minimal support in some areas, but privatize education and the property tax debate would be moot.

Replacing property taxes with higher sales and consuption taxes is defeating the purpose. Anyone that owns or rents property pays taxes either directly or through higher rent. The government has to have a certain amount of revenue to operate. What needs to be done, is to cut operating expences, not move taxes around. That's rediculous. And it makes me question Medina's ability to understand true conservatism.

She's not replacing property taxes with "higher" sales taxes. She's broadening the base of the current sales tax. Other states already tax more things than we do. And yes, she of course wants to cut the size of government, which will at the same time cut operating expenses.

Yeah, she want's to start taxing food and labor... Now Texans will have to start paying the state government so we can eat and have our plumbing fixed. That's not being conservative. That's being a liberal. I don't agree with paying property taxes. But I don't agree with paying a food tax or a labor tax.

BTW, I haven't heard her say she wants to reduce the size of the Texas Government.

Additionally, Debra Medina never said and even explained that sales tax would not go up. And even if it did go up slightly to abolish property tax, it would be ok with me and millions of Texans. Elimination of property tax would create prosperity and jobs. And you said it yourself, anyone who owns or rents pays more if property tax is in existence!! That property tax is necessary is a myth, perpetrated by government that seeks control over the people!!

Hold on. I don't agree with property taxes either. But, doing away with them will create a massive shortfall in income to the state. Which will have to be made up somewhere. Remember, she's not running for king. She still has a legislative body to work with. Who's not going to allow that big of a shortfall. And they aren't going to support new taxes, because they want to keep their seats.

When individuals do not have alodial title(outright ownership) to their property, then the state owns that property, whether its a piece of land or even things like your car, did you know that?? Beside that there are many many bloated bureaucracies in Texas much like the federal government, that could be cut or even eliminated. The lottery for example was originally for education but they diverted money to other areas.

You mean like in Arkansas. That's exactly what happened when they expanded their tax base. It gave them the state income tax, personal property taxes (As in their cars), taxes on food & labor.

I don't support any kind of taxes. But you have to remember, anytime the government tries to change something, it usually benefits them in the long run.

So what makes property taxes sacred? The average person as well as the rich lose more through property tax than any other device. You give no argument that if property taxes are eliminated that there will be a shortfall. As Medina stated, it puts money($3 billion) back in the hands of average citizens and restores a Consitutional principle!! Does she say what taxes she's going to expand? You wouldn't mind paying taxes on things that you now enjoy not paying taxes on? The state has to have a certain amount to operate. If she got elected, she better cut the outgoiong, before she starts cutting the incoming. What's important to you, might be VERY important to others.

If you don't pay taxes on your property, the government will own it. If you don't want to pay higher sales tax on a candy bar at the grocery store, you have the choice not to buy it. At this point they can try to reduce their budget to accomodate a decline in revenue, or they can attempt to tax something else. People in Texas will choose the former.
