  • ;( Ruffian didnt had to proove herself on that match race...she was too young and not all grown up, thats why i dont like races where...fillysor colts od 2 year old race at. Ruffian was one of a kind, a vey very special filly, but i think if she wouldnt started racing at 2 year old she'll never had her leg broken science those years...she was damn fast an she really was a Ruffian, i was amazed when i sa her go that fast at belmont, i missed y Ruffian.

    R.I.P <3

  • She died for nothing!!!!!!

just for money. What did she do to deserve this?

  • Its cruel to think that after all the horses that have died from racing, that have suffered on and off the track, and it still goes on. Horses should not be forced to run. they should run when it comes to them. Its horrid that they have to race at such a young age. even to have a rider. Ruffin barley lived a life untill she died.Horse racing is creul. its only for money. R I P darling...

  • i cry.....

  • Gorgeous girl... they are just too young for such an effort. The skeleton is not mature... Ruffian, Barbaro and other broke a leg because of the training at young age.

  • Match race or a full field, we race them far too young.

  • they shouldnt have raced her.

  • I think Ruffian should have been put down right on the track the place She loved most instead of in a dark strange hospital.

  • Match races had been out of the picture for years before people decided to perpetrate this disastor. They should have left well enough alone.

  • how terribly SAD it is, that her life ended too quickly - perhaps the comment that this race should not have happened is CORRECT.

  • i find it utterly REDICULOUS! that everyone claims that foolish pleasure was the winner. ruffian was ahead of him by a length! she should be known as the winner. she was running so hard that she freakand snapped her foot in half and they have a victory for foolish pleasure. nothing against the colt but it's rediculous.

  • ... This lovely horse... she hasn't die for nothing. Her Legend will be by us- ever.

Such a great, wonderful horse... you can't forget... ♥

Ruffian, we love you all the time :')

And I get truly happy if I could see you in heaven. :')

  • This Race shouldve never happened if it didnt she would probably still be alive

Its a huge shame that happened to her one of the greatest fillies ever

  • Some people say it was the gate, some people say it was the birds, some say she took a bad step BUT what if she broke down becuase of ALL of this maybe when she hit the gate hard she was in pain and spooked easily so the birds spooked her causing her to take a bad step therfore making her break down

  • I painted a figurine of a horse in black, with a small star on the forehead and a small white patch on the left hind leg, to remember Ruffian, although I have never known her .... Rest in peace, little filly ....

  • she is the most amazing racehorse ever to me, and yes i dont agree with match races either they just put on too much pressure and also, saying that horses get injuries because they are fillies n colts is the biggest racing myth around, racing them young helps prevent injuries not make them more likely, and im telling the truth i know this cos sir henry cecil said it,and i trust his every word (he is a complete legend of a flat racing trainer, and has been knighted by the queen)

  • i cried for a full hour after i watched the movie , sadest film iv ever see :'(

  • so she never stopped fighting... even in the end when she had fallen down, in her anestithized sleep, she finished the race...

  • gah... that's so fucking sad... and a filly of them all... she blew them all away. i don;t care what anyone says ruffian won that race. she own it going down... thatcolt wouldn't've had a chance if ruffians' leg didn't give out... she was a full blown winner. and actually. while she was still under after surgery she started trying to run... as if she were still racing. and her cast leg kept slamming into the other one as she ran in her sleep... and re broke her leg and broke her other one...

  • Ruffian would have won if she didn't break down. She was leading when she broke her leg. R.I.P Ruffian <3

  • ruffian had the better racing record...foolish pleasure lost some of his races. that is enough for me to call ruffian the better horse

  • I believe that ruffian would have won the match race against foolish pleasure because in every race she was always in front, she wouldn't allow the other horses to be in front of her, before she broke down, she was in front,if she didn't break down she would have won the race

  • Just got done watching the movie for the second time in years. Ruffian was going to win. She was ahead when she broke down. I was rooting for her. RIP ruffian. RIP girl...

  • :( I cant beleive it :( I feel like crying :(*

  • Thank you for taking the time to make and post this video as a tribute to Ruffian. I am very glad for the way you've chosen to tell the story, like trying to include as much original footage as possible, including the post-accident photos so we can understand what she went through( yes it's very distressing) and OMITTING footage of her breaking down. Don't think I can bear to watch her running on in pain with broken feet. Watched what happened to Barbaro and it was heartbreaking enough already.

  • That ace should have nevr happened and tB racing neesto take a look at itself and ban racing 2 years olds(cripes they get on thm as long yearligs) , there k nees aren' ven closed yet,n o wonder they break down!, Eevn3 yaer olds do too. It is sick and barbric all for money.

  • @TheLaluna1

I agree this race should never have happened. Track owners pressured the owners and trainer because it would be good for racing. And I don't agree with match races in the first place, they prove nothing.

And like I said on your other reply, do you have any statistics to back up your claims of the number of horses, their age and the cause of breaking down?

  • @parabuteo78

I don't have secific numbers, but they start them as long yearlings. At 2 a horses knees are not closed, his bones are still mallable, easy to fracture as they have not calcified yet. They are not strong enuf. That is why 2 year olds breakdown they are not fully grown skeletelly. If they waited and limited the 3 year old races their would not be this out and out slaughter and unwanted rachorses needing homes. Don't get me wrong i love it, let's just be more humane.

  • @TheLaluna1 At least it's starting to get a little better, before if you were a late foal, from may-june, you could race as soon as January 2 years later....since Barbaro if you're born in May,you can't run 'til you're really 2YO...yeah I agree, it'S far from back perfect, but it's a start. Lot more reglementation about track safety, about medication...etc, all that only in 2007. Once again, not perfect, but the first good step

  • @TheLaluna1 and you can blame the breed too, breed for to much speed, not enought strenght, too much inbreed too, more fragile bones.

It's not a perfect rule of ''run at 2, die a 5'', many horses run from 2 to 4-5 and die in their late 20, look at John Henry who ran from 2 to 9YO and die at 32

  • Pardon my asking, but where did you get the pictures of Foolish Pleasure running away without Ruffian? Excellent job, by the way.

  • do you know what happend to ruffian?she got slatered when she reatired

  • @horsegirlsforever

    What are you talking about??

Did you even watch the video before you commented? Ruffian broke down and after attempting a life saving surgery which failed, she had to be put down.

Please get your facts straight before spouting your opionion next time.

  • @horsegirlsforever what the hell are you talking about?!/!!!!!?????

  • @horsegirlsforever she was not Slaughtered she is buried at Belmont you need to watch the video instead of saying stuff thats not true.

  • @horsegirlsforever she did not get slaughtered she broke down

    Get your facts straight

  • this is sad because she was young and she was beautiful why in living HELL would they ruin a perfect gental giant to a race? really i no im gonna get hater commets back but .....think why why would you wast a life a f**king life like that can any of you answer that besides saying you no nothing about races or horses or leaving your childish commets but seriously why wast a life? think about it

  • she could have beaten the colt! she was the best and now ruffin and barbaro are forever in my heart as the best race horses ever known! she flew past every finish line like an eagle soring free she was determined to win every race she set her hoof on i look up to her as an honor to have her here on this earth with us racemen/women i cryed durin this but happy tears to know she gave us new things new records and gave us racemen/women heart and bravery

  • She was 3?!?!? That's sickening!

  • @imnotlikeothergirls5

You're not familiar with horseracing, I guess?

  • @parabuteo78 Not at all... I suppose accidents happen though... Just heard about a friend's filly who fell through a cattle guard and broke all her legs... I guess when it's in front of the whole world and in a sport it just seems a whole lot worse

  • @parabuteo78

Lots of 3 years old break down, look at Barboro, and you can't even count the number of 2 year olds. The racing commission needs to take a good look and get rid of2 yar old races all together. 3 is old enough, not realyy but better than 2 an limit the number of races until they are 4. The Quarter Horse Industry had the same problem and cleaned up their act so horses could show longer.

  • @TheLaluna1

Do you have any statistics? A reply like this is really moot without evidence to back it up. And you must realise Quarter Horses and Toroughbreds are very different breeds, with different bodies.

I agree breakdowns are awful and I cringe every time it happens. But making a statement like this on a YT vid of someone not involved in racing isn't going to do much good, is it ;)

  • @imnotlikeothergirls5 Horses usually start racing when they're two and when they're 2 and 3 their bones aren't properly developed. If you look at all the breakdowns of famous races horses they are usually 3 for eg. Barbaro and Go For Wand. I don't agree with racing them at such a young age.

  • Where did you get the song of the final race (which bein to 2:50 ) =° I search it since may month ago.... but I don't find TT

(sorry for my bad english xx)

  • @VenLightChaser

As I have said a number of times before, all the music from the three parts of this video is from the ESPN movie "Ruffian".

I have the score on cd, it was a personal gift from the composer; Lawrence Shragge. It is not and never will be available to buy, sadly.

If you are interested in the score, please contact him. I cannot give out copies of this score, that would be pirating.

    Best of luck, PB78.

  • Ruffian should never have ran because in her last race she did trip and in the vid she IS limping. I'm sorry but 've owned racehorses and when they run against colts, it's never any good. No good EVER comes out of a match race.

  • Yes and Yes.

  • Frank Whiteley's assessment that a match-race never proved anything is 100% correct. The only thing a match-race proves is that you're pushing your horse far too hard. Far harder than he or she would ever be pushed under a normal race scenario. If races were ran two horses per race? Then under match-race like conditions is how trainers would train their horses to run. But thoroughbred's are not trained that way. They're trained to follow the pace of a normal race. Then make that one big move.

  • whats the last song that starts at 4:37???

    please

i want to play it at my grandpas barial

  • @Macmiller502

All the music in these three videos is from the soundtrack of the movie Ruffian by ESPN. It's sadly not available on cd and never will be...

  • whats the last song that starts at 2:42

  • Again, another fine video! 'Twas painful to watch Ruffian's breakdown, even with the stills only - so tragic. She was such a spirited horse who just loved to run. Alas, we'll never know what she was truly capable of. Salute to a great filly!

  • she hit the gate

  • Ruffian was one of a kind. beautiful physique, amazing speed and one of the greatest. It's such a damn shame for what happened to her. She will never be forgotten

  • The best horses always die because they put more effort in than those of the not so good ones... She didn't deserve this, but it happened... and she's gone... there is nothing we could do.

  • runwildnfree- Moody Jolley, the father of Foolsih Pleasure's trainer (LeRoy Jolley) stated, "The first time you throw some speed at her and she buckles!" after she broke down. That wasn't documented in reports, but people overheard him say it on the day of the Match. Awful and nasty to say in the midst of the fall of one of the best horses in history.

  • @bethleesfive You almost had the quote correct . Here is what he actually said "The first time you throw some speed at the bitch, she buckles". And yes, I cannot think of a nastier comment to make nor a more inappropriate time to make it. My Father and my Uncle took me to that race. I was 17yrs old and up until the point where she broke down it was by far the very best day of my life.

  • @sparky11965 Thanks for the correction- that makes it even worse. I'm sure that moment has stayed with your throughout your life. Ever since I read the book, I more fully understand just how cruel the world of horseracing is, and it has helped me to educate people in my life to not support it.

  • Whats the music at the beginning?

pls send me a mail on youtube

  • One can't help but be moved by this. What a tragedy.

  • There is a book on her, Ruffian: Burning from the start by Jane Schwartz (Im not so sure about the spelling of Schwartz). It's a really good book, and if Foolish Pleasure had stopped running when Ruffian borke her leg, maybe she could have been saved, because she woul never let another horse overtake her according to the book. =)

  • @sweetmiffy I was at that race. Birthday gift from my Father and Uncle. I , too, believe if Foolish Pleasure had been pulled up and stopped the outcome may have been very different. The injury, although very serious, could have been far less damaging. And the thing that still bothers me to this day is that the opponent had the chance to try to save the life of the "greatest horse" to ever run a race, and still walk to the finish line for the win!! Still sickens me when I think about it.!

  • What an amazing horse. I had a horse that broke his sesamoid too. He too was put down but due to artharitis. U have done an amazing job of this vid. Thanks for sharing it with us

  • the song mad me cry wat was it from? this was all just so very sad it took my heart i'l never forget that filly

  • All the music in all three parts is from the soundtrack of the ESPN film "Ruffian".

  • thanks do u kno the names tho? jw

  • she would have won i know it n did foolish pleasures owner or trainer whoever really say you put some real speed at her n she breaks down i want to kno cuz they used it in the movie but idk if tht was real or hollywood great vid so sad they had to revive her twice during surgery also

  • Where did you fine the picture of Ruffian with the cast on?

  • Which one do you mean, maybe you can give the time the picture is shown?

There are several pictures of Ruffian with the cast from different sources.

  • Any pictures of her in a cast. I gess 3:41 3:51 and 403

  • The first two are from the book "Ruffian: Queen of the Fillies" and the color photo can be found online. Can't remember where though...

  • Sure, just send me a PM.

  • i no who would have one ruffian ofise but thiws is still ssssssssssssssaaaaaaaaaaaaadddddddd

  • this wouldn't play very well

  • What do you mean exactly?

There are some pieces of old footage in this part, like I said in the description.

If it plays slow or jerky, that's you're system. Wait for the red bar to fill up before playing.

  • I got it to work, but not in high uality. The red bar was all the way loaded, but it kept freezing up. Great vid anyway!

  • if u watch the interview with Bill Neck, it will show you taht she had broken her left foreleg. It also says that in her information about her if you look up her info on Google.

  • Sorry, but I don't agree with you.

I have four books on this great horse, all of them say and show, it was her right leg.

And the video you say I should watch to prove it was her left leg, even shows you're wrong.

If the horse runs towards you and injures the leg on the left, means it's actually the right leg.

The photos in this video, pictured at 3:41 , 3:51 and 4:03 clearly show the cast on her right leg.

Do you really think I wouldn't research the facts before posting a video?

  • LOL That is a great rhetorical question. Very, very nice work!

  • right leg

  • I've seen it now that you made second part... I can't tell you how much Impressed I am... Exellent job... Thank you for this great videos and pics I never seen before....

  • Thanks and I tried to include some video and mostly pictures that I hadn't seen on here before.

Don't forget to watch part three!

  • Such a beautiful video but so horribly sad. So well put together.

Where did you get all the pictures?

  • Nice to hear you liked it.

I have several books about Ruffian and most of the pictures came from them.

  • Well, this sure brought tears to my eyes...

    You put this together wonderfully.

What background music did you use?

    It's beautiful.

  • Thanks,

glad you like it. It does the same to me.

All the music in this video (all three parts) is from the soundtrack of the "Ruffian" movie by ESPN, composed by Lawrence Shragge. One of the best soundtracks I have ever heard.

  • Ahh, I agree. Beautiful music for a beautiful filly.

    Thank You.

  • Yes, indeed.

  • Heart-wrenching video, but very beautifully done. How did you find those pictures? I've never seen some of them before. The picture of Foolish Pleasure finishing alone, one set of hoofprints behind him, is devastating.

  • This is the saddest part of the video, the pictures of Foolish Pleasure racing away from a crippled Ruffian and then going down the stretch alone, bring tears to my eyes, just awful.

I have several books about this great horse with a lot of pictures which are not found online. So that's probably were most of the pictures you didn't recognise came from. And I haven't even used them all!

  • I love this video> I love to see footage/pics of Ruffian in which I've never seen before. And this Ruffian series seems to cholck-full of footage/pics I've never seen before. Thanks for posting these videos!!

  • Thanks, glad you like it.

And when I made this video I tried to use as many pictures I hadn't seen or used myself in a video before.

  • An extremely sad video, but wonderfully put together,it's brilliant.

  • Thank you ;-)

And this is the saddest part of the video. I like part 3 best myself.

  • Simply amazing is all i can say. Very sad though

  • Thanks and I agree, very sad.

My least favorite part of the video, but still, sadly, a part of Ruffian's story...

  • For some reason encoding this video after I uploaded it, took over 12 hours!

This video and the third and final part were first listed as private, because the first and third part were available but not the second. And I would like people to view the videos in order.

But everything is OK now, I hope you enjoy all three parts!
