It may not generate the buzz or mainstream following of the NBA, but it has a solid fan base. As for your assessment of the product as "terrible", they miss 1 more shot per 100 than the NBA (42% FG v 43%), and scoring is basically on par when adjusted for game length. I quite enjoy the women's game, especially the emphasis on jumpshooting.

Some WNBA are actually more skilled basketball-wise than some NBA players, but without the crazy athleticism don't make the high-flying highlight reels that we are used to seeing. The women's game is more strategic and more of a team sport that relies on teamwork rather than individual superstars. WNBA players are actually very good at basketball, though for some sexists that may be hard to accept.
