Yes! Mobile was the original capitol of New France/Old Louisianna. Biloxi Miss. was also a French capitol and had a large creole population. I am a direct descendant of the Creoles of Mobile and Clarke Cajans not Cajun. There were several multi racial isolated communites besides Louisiana Creole. And not just river communities. Most were mountain colonies. Like the Melungeons. The Melungeons and the Cajuns are officialy recognized by the government. Creoles are still working on it.
No the colors of mardi gras are not a NOLA creation. first flag with Mardi Gras colors was flown in mobile in 1704, NOLA wasnt even founded till like 1718.

THE BLACKS N NOLA ARE AS MUCH RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CULTURE AS ALL THE OTHERS !!!
LOL,i never said any thing about the french flag. the colors of mardi gras symbolize fiath, justice, power. the first mardi gras flag flew over Mobile with these 3 colors. it wasnt the same pattern of today but it was gold, purple and green.
the Rex guys only made it official, till then it was just an unoffical symbol.

Q: When was the first Mardi Gras?
A: The first Mardi Gras parade was held in New Orleans on February 24, 1857 by the Krewe of Comus. They began the tradition of presenting a parade with floats and following it with a ball for the krewe and their guests.
In 1866, following the Civil War and while Mobile was still under Union occupation, Joe Cain paraded through the streets of Mobile, dressed in improvised costume depicting a fictional Chickasaw chief named Slacabamorinic in GOLD,PURPLE,and GREEN

I googled, "Creoles in Mobile", and i got something on Creole firemen, and a Creole lady who later moved to N.O. There's nothing about Creoles in Mobile on youtube either. If there's many more Creoles in Mobile than N.O.(as you said), then where's the Creole restaurants, festivals, zydeco, and musicians? If Mobile gave N.O. it's culture, (Creoles incl.), Mobile should be FULL of gumbo, jambalaya, boudin, andouille, etc. Creoles mostly live amongst their own, so where's the Creole comm. in Mobile ?
I'm not being critical, don't get me wrong, i'm only curious about Mobile's Creoles as i'm currently learning about Lafayette, La. Creoles. Can you give me some feed-back on Mobiles' Creoles? Are you familiar with the "Cane River Creoles" of Louisiana ? What about Creoles of N.O. ? Also, where are the "Creole" restaurants in Mobile ? Where can i learn about this "Jubilee" you're talking about ? Check out the video "Fauborg Treme', The untold story of Blacks of New Orleans".
Just so you'd know, i've located two(2) "Creole" restaurants in or near Mobile. The names are, Guy's Gumbo Shack in Fairhope, Al. and Sherri's Heavenly Creole Cafe in Mobile. The menu listed for Guy's sounds like a place i'd love to eat if i were in Mobile, but i didn't see a bill of fare for "Sherri's".
We are talking about things specific to New Orleans. King cakes came from france to Mobile then N.O.
red Beans- arent indiginous to louisianaat the time new orleans was growing into the city it is today, the were grown in florida, alabama, and georgia, and made there way to new orleans
Crawfish- lets not get started.
but you did get me on the music,i wasnt thinging of that for some reason
You still didn't list the MG music and musicians from Mobile.(absent N.O.style). I reasearched the "origins" of the Kidney, or red beans and found out it's mostly Latin America and specifically Colombia. You always have a way of putting Mobile ahead of N.O. when it comes to music, food, traditions and the like but there's no evidence of it in your city. Have you ever eaten N.O. cusine ? I mean REAL cooking out of N.O. ! I know Mobile has sea-food restaurants, but do you season yours as we do ?
Its a shame that this movie was focused on race. Mardi Gras has a much richer deeper story than the color of your skin.. The racial separation during Mardi Gras is self imposed by both MAMGA and MCA and the crews alike.
If you mention Race why not also bring up the fact that the women and men don't parade together.
There is one integrated parade both with sex and race and that is the peoples parade. anyone is welcome.
there is no rule saying you cant start a crew that is integrated.
From what i'm gleaning from all of this is MAMGA is the RESULT of racism historically practiced by the White mardi gras organizations in Mobile,so i can't see how it's self-imposed.
Finally saw it and coming back to post..Every candid moment of the white side was all about exuding a pristine air of richness...whenever they black side was shown - it was all about candid moments of children acting silly, dancing around, highlighting kids under an average reading level barely gripping to words, and highlighting as much poverty as possible. While the film is a great documentary revealing how Mobile Mardi Gras is from a white perspective -- it missed the mark on the AA side
You're obviously not from around here. The REAL MONEY in Mobile is in the hands of the whites and the vast majority of blacks are well below the poverty level. Classes have not changed very much in the deep south over the years and neither have many of these deep-rooted traditions.
Actually I grew up in Mobile. What I was calling out is exactly what you centered on...class. The upper-middle and upper class blacks are largely in control of black mardi gras festivities. I am just saying the documentary seems much more rehearsed on the white coverage and more candid on the black side. The black side of mardi gras holds many fine events as well that deserved proper coverage and didnt get it.
So, in essence, Mrs. Brown is guilty of the same type of discrimination that she is accusing the royal court of having since she is presenting this material in such a subjective manner.
That's fitting because we are products of our environments and she hasn't quite left it behind.
I didnt really see it that way at all. I saw the whites portrayed as somewhat stuffy and pretentious and the african americans looked like they were having much more fun and were more festive & they were spending just as much money. I also thought it showed that the honor of being crowned was much more important to the afican americans because it went beyond simple lineage. But, thats whats great about this doc, you can be gather from it whatever you want.
i havent seen this whole thing but i really wished they wouldve spoke to some of the older more affluent people on the black side to get some deeper knowledge on that side of mardi gras. The black king in the movie trailer sounds really stupid (then again so do the rednecks who keep their masks on) - go figure
Well i would just like to say that it is about time someone is spreading the knowledge about the true origins of Mardi Gras. It all started in Mobile, AL, MY CITY! I see a lot of familiar faces in this trailer. Good job Mobile!
if you want to look at the true origins of mardi gras, bear in mind that catholics have been celebrating carnival for at least around 700 years before Bienville founded Mobile as the capital of French Louisiana.
To therealist 16 from a New Orleanian: We can go back and forth about who was the first city with Mardi gras until you wear out the history books. The fact is N.O. is more popular than Mobile outside of Mardi gras which gives it an edge. The food, music, ambience, world famous hometown celebrities etc. all contribute to our popularity. It's not who's first out of the starting block but who's the best at the end of the race.(i.e.CHAMPIONS).
Mobiles mardi Gras is more family friendly. and actually Mobiles mardi Gras attracts more people. Mobile is smaller than New orleans so when you crunch the number, mobile attracts alot more people.
and Mobile has more international recongnition outside of mardi gras( mobile has over 30 world wide companies in the City.
and Mobile did have the first Mardi Gras, thats fact not opinion
I'm not debating the "fact" that Mobile had the "first" MG celebration, what i'm saying is N.O. is universally known for Mardi gras. When ANYBODY speaks of M.G, New Orleans comes to mind, not Mobile, Alabama ! What else attracts tourist to Mobile at Mardi gras ? The food ? The music ? The celebrities ? The tourist attractions ? The brass bands ? I agree Mobile would be a SAFER place to celebrate MG than N.O., but it would be like watering-down soup (or gumbo ) until it's almost tasteless.
FYI One of those restaurants you listed was started WHERE ? I'll give you ONE guess! hint..."She" started her FIRST restaurant on the corner of Banks and Broad St. and later moved it to Orleans and Broad. Oh did i give it away by saying, ORLEANS ? Oh, you wouldn't know it anyway. You must've been living under a rock not to know about N.O. music and cusine (Mardi gras or otherwise) or in prison in solitary confinement. Who in the world would travel to Mobile to eat your cusine and not ours.
Who'd go to N.O. "just to eat "? MILLIONS of tourists who love eating foods indigenous to that region that can't be found anywhere else, that's who ! Would you go to KFC and expect the same taste as POPEYE'S (New Orleans creation) ? dsjj251, You have got to be kidding! You said the music, cusine, etc. came to N.O. from Mobile, Al. Are there any Cajun and creole chefs in Mobile ? Name MG musicians and songs (not from N.O.) played at MG in Mobile. Name INDIGENOUS (cultural)foods from Mobile.

Creoles---NOLA(post-Civil War) had the largest number of FrEE CREOLES OF COLOR,Freed Blacks, mixed races than ANY OTHER SOUTHERN CITY/STATE.
Creoles of color were n NOLA,,n North La(Cain River) and n the Lafayette to Lake Charles corridor..
Most of the Creoles of color that migtared west/east/north had roots n LOUISIANA!
Since ,NOLA IS/HAS ALWAYS BEEN LARGER THAn MOBILE NATURALLY THERE WERE MORE CREOLES OF COLOR !!
SINCE NOLA WAS MORE TOLERANT OF THOSE VERY SAME ,HOW COULD MOBILE HAVE MORE ?

they were presented by the NOLA Krewe of REX to honor his visit !!
Thats a Russian HAS NOHING/ ANYTHING TO DO WITH MOBILE OR THE FRENCH !!!
If ur gonna speak on history AT LEAST GET IT RIGHT !!
U HAVE SPOKEN 1 truth and that is on MOBILE BEING THE 1st USA CELEBRATION !
Uve been wrong on the foods/Cajuns & Creoles/attendance etc !!

the FRENCH FLAG planted n Mobile was vertical ReD,BLUE & WHITE !
the 2nd French Flag is Blue with the Gold Fleur-De-Lis Emblems !
THE FRENCH FLAG THAT WAS PLANTED N ALL THEIR ""DISCOVERED" LAND WERE THE SAME !
NOTHING ABOUT THE CARNIVAL/MARDI GRAS COLORS ARE RELATED TO MOBILE AT ALL !!!
THE ABOVE ARE NOT MARDI GRAS COLORS R THEY ?
AGAIN they were presented during a visit from a RUSSIAN GRAND DUKE AND ADOPTED BY THE VARIOUS CARNIVAL CELEBRANTS !

New Orleans has more Cajins but Mobile his more Creoles'
Creole is a mixture of French, Spanish, African-American, and Native American heritage.

La Cajuns-----u are UNINFORMED AGAIN !!
NOLA is KNOWN AS HOME OF CREOLE COOKING NOT CAJUN.
there are & have always been Cajuns n NOLA BUT THE LARGEST # of CAJUNS HAVE ALWAYS BEEN LOCATED N SW La..
THE LAFAYETTE/NEW IBERIA & SURROUNDING AREAS...
UNTIL 30 years ago, people outside of La had minimal knowledge of Cajun cooking.
In La., Cajun Cooking was more of a regional and country style/menu..
EVERYTHING CAJUN BECAME POPULAR WORLDWIDE, DURING THE 1980s but had been around for decades..
