I know i'm gonna get 10 thumbs downs for this... but why does this song sound so wimpy to me?? I love Topaz and She Brakes for Rainbows, which are similar to Deadbeat Club, but have that B-52s "edge." I don't know. Maybe I just have keep listening to it.
Wow...hadn't seen this video in ages. Forgot hot stunning Kate looked in it. The pseudo 50's polka dot hair scarf (babushka??) and that sultry smile, perfect model material. She was about 40 at the time of the video too! And Cindy with those soulful eyes. Glad to see this video posted!
Every once in a while, I'll blast this song from my computer speakers at work when the yappers a few cubes over start their noisy chit chatting (which can last two hours non-stop!). It usually gets them to move their lousy conversation over to another area. :)
I don't know if they are the best group ever, but i put them in my alltime top ten. Probably the most unique band out there. Also, according to their bios, all of them are musicians. Of course back in the 70s and 80s most bands were complete bands. Nowdays, many bands are living off of one or two people. This album was, at least for me, release at a good moment in my life.
You know what this is just to damn good! You end up listening to it over and over again. It's so addicting! It never gets old! Each time you listen to it it gets better and better.
This is a terrific song from an album full of terrific pop songs and I don't mean to sound disparaging by calling it pop, but "Cosmic Thing" is about as perfect as pop gets. Kate and Cindy's voices were never better than on this album.
I agree that Topaz is a masterpiece and was not properly marketed but we fans like it. The first time I heard Deadbeat Club I hated it, specially after being hooked to "Roam" but afterwards I liked it.. a lot. I think they have far worst songs than this one... like "Junebug" for example. LOL
Love the B-52s.. but, to me, Deadbeat Club is not one of their better tunes... which ironically, was 1 of their 3 top 40 hits. Topaz, which is a similar tune from the same album, is a terrific song. But it wasn't released for reason.
I fell in love with this song when I went on a road trip in early 1990 to Athens with a friend who was attending the wedding of a friend in the music scene there. The song is filled with references to stuff in the town. For instance, "Normaltown" refers to suburban Athens, which is demarcated by the local K-Mart (assuming it is still even there). Allen's was the local watering hole and apparently beer is just a buck now nearly 20 years later. Mike Stipe of REM also makes a cameo here.
The west side K-Mart is a Hobby Lobby now and the east side K-mart is still around, but that whole area is really expanding, so it could go at any time. The old Allen's is gone but they changed locations. Gonna miss the christmas lights downtown this year, later days Athens.
One of my favorite songs and videos by the Athens, GA New Wave legends. I always look at this and see that they must have had such a nice time with the folks there. I wanna go down there and get some of those good vibes. There's a very big communion between all those great Athens bands like The B-52's, R.E.M. Pylon, etc. It's unlike where I'm at in NYC where all the bands are competitive.
This is one of my fav videos form them cause it's so simple. So beautiful in black and white.I do agree with you Keith is so YUMMY in this video.Saw them in May and my god Keith is stunning!
Keith: you never looked more beautiful, or sexy than you did in this video.. I close my eyes and just dream of wrapping my arms around your neck, and slow-dancing 3 or 4 steps with you... I'd be the happiest man alive!
Yippeeee for me!!! I just bought tickets for their show in Memphis this fall!!! There is not a group out there that has brought me more smiles than the B-52's!
A fabulous track: beautiful harmonies; great lyrics and the video really compliments it. I never really could understand why Love Shack was the single from the album and not this. One of the best songs the B52s ever did.
Mine too!! Tho I've got a def soft spot for: Roam, Planet Claire and Private Idaho. I would mention their breakthrough track-Rock Lobster also, but I've heard it a few too many times-Haha. Peace :)
There were 3 singles from 'Cosmic Thing': "Love Shack", "Roam", and "Deadbeat Club", which hit No. 3, 3, and 30 on the Billboard chart respectively. A fourth single, the title track, was considered but ultmately didn't come out.
I can't believe that Love Shack only made it no. 3. It was SO huge when it came out. Not that no. 3 is something to sneeze at. That's just an expression.
Organic tear blazing black and white through drooling neigborhoods lends itself a classic break beat tune that keeps spilling over and over into resplendant joy.
Kate and Cindy have the most harmonious voices ever produced in the 80's...I love Roam and Deadbeat Club so much because of the perfect blend of these girls' talents. Fred is also great, B-52's won't be complete without his wacky and carefree-sounding tones. They mixed effectively with the girls'. Wish I can travel back to the 80's back to the good ol' times. Love ya and miss you guys!!
Wonderful song - this reminds me of carefree living in Greece with friends. I love that line - we'll dance in the garden in torn sheets in the rain. Everyones got a story.
They could have made a better video for this song showing clips of their early days. It looks like some perfume commercial. Even the wigs are too high fashion looking.I love em still though.Hope they have a hit with the new cd which is GREAT!!
Well put. Fantastic vocal harmonies is right. I think my favorite is the blend on that line from 1:05-1:08 (& whenever it repeats). Then I love the sudden unison on "rain" (at 1:22, and later).
Kitschy? Come one. What's kitschy about this song? It's late 80's contemporary. Is the word "contemporary" verboten in your circle or something? Are you afraid to embrace what is not cool?
My father died a few years ago after going downhill for years. We were all worn out with work and worry, but it was hardest on my mother. We had some consolation for our grief, that he was no longer sick and she was no longer overwhelmed.
The day after his funeral I went for a relaxing, refreshing drive along the coast. This was the song I played on the car tape player.
if they stepped out of this video and on to the streets of any major city, showed up at any bangin' club, they'd still be WAY cooler than anyone around.
Sorry to intrude on your life but I used to do the same thing to the first two albums. Yes, I said albums and yes I'm old but I also had a great mirror in my room too. I WAS FRED!! My sisters were Kate and Cindy when I could convience them. Where are they now as I still dance around the house?
Great song, but Fred Schneider kind of kills it sticking his head out of that convertible and uttering "Deadbeat Club" like a bi-polar on some mood stabilizer drug.
Check out "Girl From Ipanema Goes To Greenland".....their best song and video in my opinion!
This is one of the sweatest song.
I dreamt and saw my future through this song in old days.

Great song, but Fred Schneider kind of kills it sticking his head out of that convertible and uttering "Deadbeat Club" like a bi-polar on some mood stabilizer drug.
Check out "Girl From Ipanema Goes To Greenland".....their best song and video in my opinion!

I think it's actually Fred and Keith in unison saying that.
Of course the whole idea of the song is about sticking out like a sore thumb, just like Fred is doing in his 20-seat Chrysler. ;-)

I agree, Girl From Ipanema is such a great song!
I love the mini kate with her red wig smiling and bouncing in the clouds. It makes me laugh so much!
