  • Most of the major car manufacturers bought rights to make this engine, its a shame they didn't bring the technology and reliability to the rotary. 5.0s are cheap, reliable power houses, coupled with a t5 or c4 tranny they are virtually unstoppable. Very compact as well, if you could mount it far enough back in the bay you could get close to the original balance of the chassis. Ford and Mazda are pretty much one and the same now so kudos on this swap.

  • very cool man i am putting a 350sbc in my 1982 rx7 right now but i am doing every thing my self i made my motor mounts and trans mount i kinda wish i would have just got the grannys kit but its to late for that now what kind of changes have you done to the car since 07 if i may ask

  • I haven't done anything as far as upgrades, the chassis has like 250k miles and it's really starting to show. Chasing electrical gremlins and fixing the clutch linkage which has bent/broken countless times at nearly every point in the system, is keeping me pretty busy. Motor rebuild/e303 cam and solid axle 4 link in the uprade schedule for the future.

  • v8 doesnt make the car better, its cheap hp yes, but if u put a real rotary engine like 20b it will smoke that whatever you do!

  • @metalmanga your an idiot you can pull way more hp out of a v8 than you can a 4 cyl or rotor iv seen people with hondas an stuff talk about how fast they are and i ask how many times have you blown the engines its always more than 3>! Asked a guy with a 650hp trans am the same thing he said iv had it for about 4 years now no problems. he takes it racing once a month in alabama running low 10;s and high 9's

  • @Jizzo13945 there is a 20B 3rotor Rx-7 that runs high 6's from Australia, you can get around 600-700hp out of the 20B without blowing it in a racing configuration with a moderate amount of boost, also if your aiming to build a race car you have to think about other things like balance and not just how much horsepower you can jam into the car, and if you just want an everyday car i don't see a point in getting over 500hp since its illigal in most countires, also the rotary engine is alot lighter.

  • @metalmanga you can pull 2,000 out of a 4.6 litre ford engine so 600 or 700 dosent really compair does it? more cylenders = more torque u can build a 4 cly to have mad power with very low torque say 300 hp with 190 ft lbs torque. v8s 300hp is matched by 305 ft lbs torque. and i know you honda nerds on here have somthing to say about weight and all that other bs think of what its like driving a car with the seats and doors on it with out sacrificing speed that would be great wouldent it?

  • It is once in a blue moon that you get a blown apex seal. My toyota wagon has 304k miles on it and still runs strong. Yes, Toyota Corolla wagon. RWD. Heavily modified.

  • Rotaries, th 13B in particular are guaranteed to die and will require rebuilds that you have to do yourself or get someone who knows rotaries (which is hard since the RX is the only recent car that uses this motor) and expensive, that's why you see so many people ditches there RX-7 for other cars or get a motor swap.

  • Uhh, my Toyota wagon has a rotary. 304k miles on it also. There are tons of people who know either very little, like you, and people who know tons about rotary engines, like me for instance and i know tons of people from all over who know tons about them.

Actually, I rebuilt the dash myself and put a very low mileage odometer in there when i did the build. It isn't even the chassis that the body came with. Don't go around spouting off shit you don't even know about. Anyone can tell you that a stock 89 corolla chassis is not RWD or even AWD. You need to own up to the truth that rotary engines are in fact very reliable.

  • to clarify... the "grinding" noise is not a grinding at all, it's the loose exhaust brackets on the h-pipe rattling like crazy, car just passed smog last week BTW lol in CA! and the weight balance issue has been debated and put to rest, aluminum hood, heads+batt relocation and ur good to go

  • rotaryknowitall , the car is probably not " off balance " . Do some research , the vast majority of V8 RX7's handle just as as good as a rotary powered RX7 .

    All that hard work to make very powerful very fast very fun to drive sports car .

  • It actually stays relatively the same. After a 302 swap it still weighs the same as a turbo. I know it stays close to 50/50 but i cant give you the exact ratio off the top of my head.

  • Your average all-iron 302 will fuck it up quite badly in terms of weight balance mate...

    With an aluminum-head motor it's probably around 53/47 which is not really ideal.

  • Not too tough, the granny's kit bolted right in, no problem. The hardest part was the wiring, radiator hoses, hood and most of all, the clutch setup.
