It is impossible to overstate what this man's music has meant to me. In the depths of my loneliness, this voice kept me company. I first saw X in 1987 and then saw John Doe at McCabe's Guitar Shop (Santa Monica) countless times. His solo albums are fantastic. Now I sing his songs to my children as they fall asleep at night. What a catalog of music and what a treasure of words and emotions. This man was alt country long before they had a name (cowpunk?). No labels and no boundaries.

I love John. But it's not corporate country music that sucks. It's country music that sucks. Corporations only enhance what is already a simpleton form. Sorry. I say the same thing about Blues music too.
Nice video. I got the opportunity to meet him in 1994-5 at a college bar. I stood next to him against the wall(not knowing who he was)and I talked harshly about the local band on stage. He looked at me and took a swig of his beer and said "Kid, I gotta go on stage and play. I hope you're not so harsh on me." His show was awesome! Cool guy!I think he opened for Juliana Hatfield?
Jesus, there's an orchestra coming out of that there guitar.

Thanks to World Cafe and NPR, I heard his music. I hope he comes to Louisville, Ky. I'm hooked on his music style.

@dylantoniazzi I wish I could find a higher quality of this session. I listened to the studio version and I didn't like it so much.

Did John Doe sing "I will always love you" in the country style in the film "The Bodyguard". I would so love to hear his country version!
