One of the greatest songs by one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time... This particular song holds a very special place in my heart of two young kids experiencing life for the first time... R.I.P. Dan... You will be truly missed...
DAMN I Miss Dan Seals hearing this makes me miss him even more i just wish he was still around so he could see all the praise he's getting from all of his fans.
I remember Dan being in the rain on a dark day with rain pouring off his hat brim towards the end of a video to this song which is not this one. This video is good but the one I saw seemed more profound. Now I am going to torture myself trying to find it!
I was lucky and I saw one of his shows in a small club up here in New England. After the show I went out to his bus and he signed my guitar, an Ibanez Artwood Series. We spoke for a minute as he wrote his name; he said he liked Ibanez guitars, “they make a great guitar”. He was as nice as a person could be no airs about him at all. The signature is fading with time; as I continue play the guitar, however the memories of that night remain strong.
@steeleydan65 The fiddle and mandolin on this song...... BOTH of them were played by Mark O'Connor, back in the days when he was in great demand as a session musician.... before he became the highly sought after composer he is today.
...'And weep not, for those whom have dared to loved the least of mine. For in them you will find my best and be comforted by their least - and know love as none yet have'...
Seen quite a few comments here stating what a shame it was he didn't get more country music (read Nashville) recognition and that marketing folks shaped him into something he wasn't early on in his career...but...his songs overcame all the fake packaging....he could sing "I'd really love to see you tonight" in platform shoes / a 3 piece leisure suit / bad Toni Tenille haircut and what you'd see in your mind's eye is a guy in a corduroy shirt / leather vest / jeans / Bailey u-roll-it hat.
Great song and Awsome singer!!! Was very lucky to see Dan in concert at an indoor arena after a bullriding in Carthage missouri in the early 90s. Huge loss to the music industry whenever he passed on!!!
Absolutely Beautiful. "In the night like Shadow Dancers before their time is gone--they rage on." Beautiful lyrics "against the lives that this world gave them, hoping something's there to save them." Doesn't get any better than that.
...Dan Seals: A voice of a generation. Timeless and inspirational; Without bounds nor traditions; Almost wreckless but always 'Sonic Alchemy.' His contribution cannot be redone, forestalled nor replaced...
Dan Seals was such a great talent. I think this is a video about young love. The mixed relationship, which is what I have, is a coincedence. True love is color blind.
I don't see this as a song about racism at all. It's about human beings struggling to be happy in a world where achieving happiness can be a real struggle. It's Dan Seals finest. We lost a huge talent when we lost Dan. He had a gift for touching a person's heart with his sincere vocal style. RIP, Dan. You and your music will certainly live on forever.
Just saw John Ford Coley (as in : :England Dan and...) in Misquamicut RI. He was on my radio show, and made a point to speak kindly of his late partner...
@stoutfalcon I've never seen him play a left handed guitar. All I've ever seen him play is a right handed guitar upside down. Little e up!! That's the way he learned and he told me that he couldn't play very well the correct way. Different, but it works!!
@claylynn1 yeah sadly a lot of the country stations don't tend to play Seals' stuff. they tend to lean towards the Miranda Lamberts and Carrie Underwoods of the scene. not to say that their music is bad; it's just that sometimes the result is people like Dan Seals get overlooked.
I think this song describes a typical marriage.....where every day can be a struggle to figure what to do next in a world where nothing makes sense. This is my all time fave Dan Seals song. RIP, Dan.
@macchriss I couldn't have put it better....I am not into country but this is got to be one of the best songs for its music, aura and voice....it sends chills down my spine...we are all raging on! RIP Dand
A superstar as far as I am concerned. Don't know why America never fully embraced him. So much talent and such emotion in his music. Really moves the soul
I just became aware of his death as well. I feel guitly not keeping up.
@perg84 sometimes people get pigeonholed in the music industry and can't seem to break that public preconception. he was fantastic as England Dan (though it wasn't to everyone's taste) and then on his own. the sad fact as well was that he did this type of music right around the time that the "urban cowboy" (i.e., Garth Brooks, Alan Jackson, George Strait, etc) came along and it kinda swept Dan aside. it's unfortunate cos I think his country stuff is fantastic!

@lovescody17 thank's that mean's a lot. I'm about to embark on my second combat tour in October and in my own way I raging on right now maybe one day it will not have to be that way!
Wow...I had no idea Dan passes away :-( also I never knew he was a lefty guitarist either. Anyone know how he died? I always loved this song back when it was played on TNN"The NASHVILLE Network" and CMT"Country Music Television" not the garbage channel its become now.
I haven't seen this video or heard this song in almost 20 years. This song reminds me of Mark Nesler's "love her for Me" about a mother not approving an interracial relationship between her son and girlfriend. So sad. R.I.P Dan and may your spirit and music live on forever.
...I'm just so proud that I was a fan of Mr. Dan long before many knew of his blessing of music...What lose. I can only imagine, that God's chorous must sound better with him amongst it's ranks. Bravo Mr. Dan, you cannot be replaced and your works will never be undone...
The Dixie Chicks said something that "most" people agree with? Not where I'm coming from. Please don't speak for "most" people! RIP, Dan Seals. You were one of the great ones.
PJ... Greatings from Texas...I'm not speaking for you, but for the 70%+ that do not agree with you... so I should have said "vast majority" ; ) My mistake.
The song isn't about racism. I can't understand why the original intent of the song, so poignant and universal, was changed so drastically and meaninglessly in this video. It's about the lonely, desperate search for some kind of lasting meaning. Listen, and don't watch the ridiculous video, and the true intent is clear. The characters are lonely, desperate, unhappy: a married couple cheating, and two lost teenagers. Race has nothing to do with it.
The video portrayed the song's meaning just fine. Only part of the video was about racism and it was portrayed as just one of the things that cause pain. The video shows vignettes of people simply coping with the pain and loss in their lives by expressing love to the most special person in their life. It's beautiful and meaningful.
When I was a young man, I lived the same scenario as the young couple in the video. Now I'm approaching 40 and relate to the middle aged couple. You penned my life. What a great song. Thanks Dan.
Dan you will be missed. Your music always had a relaxing quality for me in it. I could listen to the greatest hits cd over and over.. such a great singer... what a loss.
His well-crafted songs tended to be insightful and graphic with lofty themes. In 1989, his music video for the song "Rage On" addressed a topic rare in country music: an interracial relationship.
"When we record songs, we take chances," Seals said at the time. "We feel we are on the cutting edge of what we can do."
It showed angry youths smashing the windows of the car of a young man dating a girl of a different race. One boy hurled a beer bottle at the girl's father. The song itself was about small town values.
@canadianmatt3 I thoguht it was about some small town kid that hooked up with a girl.Who knew it was about racism?I didn't hear that when the song came out in 87-88.
When Ray Price had Charley Pride on the Opry, it was "taking chances". When Merle Haggard wrote "Irma Jackson" at the height of the Civil RIghts struggle, it was "cutting edge".
Doing a video about racism in the 80s was not brave, since nobody was defending racism by that time. In fact, the video isn't so much fighting bigotry as fomenting it by portraying small town America in such a stereotypical light.
This is one of my favorite songs, but I refuse to pretend that the video was brave.
Maybe not "defending racism", but it was still there in the 80's and still is. Back then this was taking a risk. Looking "liberal" in country music is a career killer Just look at what happened to the Dixie Chicks career for saying something that most people agree with now.
Martina McBride, Faith Hill and Tim Mcgraw are all liberal Democrats, and their careers have not been adversely affected. McGraw even did a song about a woman having an abortion.
The reason the Dixie Chicks disappeared from radio is that they stopped recording radio-friendly music. Attacking your leader on the eve of battle is controversial in any culture. Opposing racism isn't anymore.
Opposing racism is the equivalent of being in favour of kitten and rainbows, and has been since the 70s.
I just read the news about Dan Seals' death & came here to listen to some of his stuff that I don't have yet (I still have some of his records, when he was with England Dan & John Ford Coley). He was a fine talented man & I am sorry to see another fine musican leave us.
This song came out when I was 18 and I always related to the young couple but now as I approach 40 I see the song from the perspective of the middle aged couple. Fantastic video. This was Dan Seals' best song. Not sure why it was never in a heavier rotation when it was released and it obviuosly gets no play now. Rest in Peace Dan Seals.
Really? Dan was the sweetest person who had a strong belief in Jesus, so I'm not sure why you would say such a thing. Baha'is believe in Christ, but don't presume to know who's farther or closer to God based on titles.
Although Baha'is recognize the existence of one god, their god is NOT the God of the Bible. Baha'is teach the same New Age garbage of enlightenment and self-improvement. Take a look at their official website and you realize quickly that Baha'i is NOT Christian. Any knowledgeable Bible-believer knows that Allah is NOT God, he is a mythical character.
2...The Islamic Muslims deny that Jesus ever died on the cross. They dent that Jesus was the Son of God. Muslims deny Christ, which makes them "antichrists" according to 1st John 2:22, "Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son."
3...Baha'is do NOT recognize Jesus Christ as being any greater than Moses, Muhammad or Buddha. The Bible declares that at the NAME OF JESUS shall every knee bow, and NO other name (Philippians 2:10, "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth."
Shjame on you people for using this forum to spout your bigotry. Have some respect for the dead,or did you miss the verse in the Bible about that. The man is dead, show some respect. If you have such a need to be heard, there's a bot-filled yahoo room for you somewhere.
PeeFinster, please stop hating. Try to follow Christ's teachings of love and not being judgmental. And Baha'is do believe in Christ. They just believe that the spirit of Christ manifested itself from age to age rather than once. The spirit of Christ existed from the beginning. Why would it wait to manifest itself only once 2000 years ago? And in regards to Allah, Arab Christians call God Allah! Do they not believe in God because they happen to speak another language? Just be nice!
PeeFinster, You are claiming to know who is going to hell based on your interpretations of things. Even though Baha'is believe in Jesus and see him as The Christ, you still condemn Baha'is because they acknowledge other teachers. That is your opinion and is not biblically based. I am a Baha'i and I love Christ and your telling me that I don't. You are judging me and a great man who was much more christ oriented than you realize.
Buddha? Zoroaster? Krishna?...divine messengers? You left out Muhammad. The Word of God declares that salvation can ONLY be found through Jesus Christ. Acts 4:10-12 clearly teaches that there is NO OTHER NAME by which we can be saved,"...that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole.
2..This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." Not one of the men recognized as "divine messengers" by the Baha'is taught that Jesus was the ONLY Way to heaven. They were FALSE prophets!!!
"1If I speak in the languages of humans and angels but have no love, I have become a reverberating gong or a clashing cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can understand all secrets and every form of knowledge, and if I have absolute faith so as to move mountains but have no love, I am nothing" 1 Corinthians 13
I agree with the content of all of your posts, but I question the wisdom of using this a forum to express it. Be cautious of your tone, it matters.
I didn't know that there was a verse in the Bible about respecting the dead. Can you give me the cite?
That said, it is a bit tacky to use a brilliant artist's passing to attack his faith. I saw Dan in 1990 and was blown away by his talent and thoughful songwriting.
I had forgot about this song till I was listening to a different Dan Seals song. I have always listened to a much harder type of music yet there was always something about Dan Seals that made me stop and listen. You are now with the other greats, Johnny Cash, Warren Zevon, Waylon Jennings etc
When I heard that Dan Seals died today, I had to find this video. It's beauty is in the simplicity. Very few instruments and such a great set of lyrics. RIP, Dan.
I read where Dan Seals died today after fighting cancer which prompted me to go this great video. "They Rage On' was probably his best song. He was a giant of a country singer...much better in country than pop. RIP.
....England Dan or Dan Seals, Excellence cannot be bound by name alone. A wonderful piece of music. Your generous piece of humility will not be undone by this unique and beautious piece, Bravo Mr. Dan, your talent knows no bounds. Bravo...
This song holds special meaning for me. I was a high school senior and working as a DJ at my hometown radio station when this came out. It's always been very special to me. I saw Dan once in concert, and he was great.
I have had the opportunity to see Dan Seals many times in concert, and he always puts his heart into a song and he remembers his fans, as well as some of the towns he has met them.
m a young nasty and hardcore girl. I like to play with myself on the cam. I love to make happy people arround the world. The best thing what i like to do that is to chat here on this site and to have fun and sex with more and more guys. I love to see how they cum. I can imagine that in my mouth, hmmmm. come visit me at Play-Cam (.COM) my user-id there is Stephanie-ajco chat soon on cam
Classic. Please think of Dan and his family during these times. An American treasure...what a song writer. May your faith and God carry you through to better times.
i think race is involved because i see a chevy 327 with hooker headers in the background lined up ready to run the quarter against a 390 ford fairlane 4 speed running through ez flows....thats about as race- involved as this song gets..because there is certainly no reference in the lyrics to any other kind..+-
i dont get where race is involved hes singing about a woman stuck in a small town and how they get together and fall in love before there time is gone.and hes singing about other lovers meetingan older woman who is lonely and they are also lonely
garvinzoom, Us caucasian people might be racist depending on the people. Blacks whites and asians can all be assholes. I've met many and am so fucking tired of this fucking politically correct fucking country. ps. this is not a country anymore. It is a safe haven for criminals.
What does race have to do with this song?? Am I missing something here. The lyrics are not racial, they're just about lonely or lost people seeking another person for comfort... Right??
Well, you are right about the lyrics but the video has a message also. Some may not see it the way I am but the Asian girl and caucasian male seem to be fighting racism like the guy throwing the bottle at the asian man on the sidewalk. That is the way I read it though.
Why does everyone see races? I saw a boy that was mad at his girlfriend's dad because he would not let her see him again. Wild young man, girl in love, sensible and overprotective father. Could the race problem be that we create the division mostly in our own heads?? I think so. I can't help what color I am nor can you. So why would I even concern myself with that thought? You either like me or not. I you do, great! If not, and don't want to get to know me, then, so be it.
Okay, I had not seen the video that way but I can see what you are saying. I also agree with your in our own head comment, we are a flawed race of man that sometimes do judge people by there race and background. If we could be blind to these things it would be a better world but we are not.
Race is an element but it's presented as just one of the things that cause pain and that people seek solace from in expressions of love towards their partner.
One of the greatest songs by one of the greatest singer-songwriters of all time... This particular song holds a very special place in my heart of two young kids experiencing life for the first time... R.I.P. Dan... You will be truly missed...

God Bless you, Dan. Where Jesus is, you are.
PTCello 2 years ago
The video portrayed the song's meaning just fine. Only part of the video was about racism and it was portrayed as just one of the things that cause pain. The video shows vignettes of people simply coping with the pain and loss in their lives by expressing love to the most special person in their life. It's beautiful and meaningful.
I loved Dan Seals and miss his music so much. :(

"When we record songs, we take chances," Seals said at the time. "We feel we are on the cutting edge of what we can do."
canadianmatt3 2 years ago
As the Canadian News put it today:
His well-crafted songs tended to be insightful and graphic with lofty themes. In 1989, his music video for the song "Rage On" addressed a topic rare in country music: an interracial relationship.
"When we record songs, we take chances," Seals said at the time. "We feel we are on the cutting edge of what we can do."
canadianmatt3 2 years ago
It showed angry youths smashing the windows of the car of a young man dating a girl of a different race. One boy hurled a beer bottle at the girl's father. The song itself was about small town values.
canadianmatt3 2 years ago
@canadianmatt3 I thoguht it was about some small town kid that hooked up with a girl.Who knew it was about racism?I didn't hear that when the song came out in 87-88.
doughesson 1 year ago
When Ray Price had Charley Pride on the Opry, it was "taking chances". When Merle Haggard wrote "Irma Jackson" at the height of the Civil RIghts struggle, it was "cutting edge".
Doing a video about racism in the 80s was not brave, since nobody was defending racism by that time. In fact, the video isn't so much fighting bigotry as fomenting it by portraying small town America in such a stereotypical light.
This is one of my favorite songs, but I refuse to pretend that the video was brave.
dragknuckle 2 years ago
I was just quoting the news release if you have an issue with it take it up with them I suppose. Cheers
canadianmatt3 2 years ago
Maybe not "defending racism", but it was still there in the 80's and still is. Back then this was taking a risk. Looking "liberal" in country music is a career killer Just look at what happened to the Dixie Chicks career for saying something that most people agree with now.
utgrad92 2 years ago

Baha'is believe in Christ, but don't presume to know who's farther or closer to God based on titles.
nathansquest 2 years ago
Baha'i is straight from the pits of hell. They are a dangerous false religion because they claim to be "Christian," but they certainly are not.
PeeFinster 2 years ago
Although Baha'is recognize the existence of one god, their god is NOT the God of the Bible. Baha'is teach the same New Age garbage of enlightenment and self-improvement. Take a look at their official website and you realize quickly that Baha'i is NOT Christian. Any knowledgeable Bible-believer knows that Allah is NOT God, he is a mythical character.
PeeFinster 2 years ago
2...The Islamic Muslims deny that Jesus ever died on the cross. They dent that Jesus was the Son of God. Muslims deny Christ, which makes them "antichrists" according to 1st John 2:22, "Who is a liar but he that denieth that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denieth the Father and the Son."
PeeFinster 2 years ago
3...Baha'is do NOT recognize Jesus Christ as being any greater than Moses, Muhammad or Buddha. The Bible declares that at the NAME OF JESUS shall every knee bow, and NO other name (Philippians 2:10, "That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth."
PeeFinster 2 years ago
Shjame on you people for using this forum to spout your bigotry. Have some respect for the dead,or did you miss the verse in the Bible about that. The man is dead, show some respect. If you have such a need to be heard, there's a bot-filled yahoo room for you somewhere.
RIP Dan,you gave some of us hope in the dark.

Mind your business little girl.
PeeFinster 2 years ago
PeeFinster, please stop hating. Try to follow Christ's teachings of love and not being judgmental. And Baha'is do believe in Christ. They just believe that the spirit of Christ manifested itself from age to age rather than once. The spirit of Christ existed from the beginning. Why would it wait to manifest itself only once 2000 years ago? And in regards to Allah, Arab Christians call God Allah! Do they not believe in God because they happen to speak another language? Just be nice!
nathansquest 2 years ago
Jesus tells his followers to judge EVIL!
Iam nice.
Because I tell the "truth" about what the Lord says Iam considered a "hater".
You know Jesus was persecuted for preaching the "truth" and it says in the Bible his followers will receive the same.
PeeFinster 2 years ago
PeeFinster, You are claiming to know who is going to hell based on your interpretations of things. Even though Baha'is believe in Jesus and see him as The Christ, you still condemn Baha'is because they acknowledge other teachers. That is your opinion and is not biblically based. I am a Baha'i and I love Christ and your telling me that I don't. You are judging me and a great man who was much more christ oriented than you realize.
nathansquest 2 years ago
Buddha?
PeeFinster 2 years ago
2..This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." Not one of the men recognized as "divine messengers" by the Baha'is taught that Jesus was the ONLY Way to heaven. They were FALSE prophets!!!
PeeFinster 2 years ago
"1If I speak in the languages of humans and angels but have no love, I have become a reverberating gong or a clashing cymbal. 2If I have the gift of prophecy and can understand all secrets and every form of knowledge, and if I have absolute faith so as to move mountains but have no love, I am nothing" 1 Corinthians 13
I agree with the content of all of your posts, but I question the wisdom of using this a forum to express it. Be cautious of your tone, it matters.
dragknuckle 2 years ago
I didn't know that there was a verse in the Bible about respecting the dead. Can you give me the cite?
That said, it is a bit tacky to use a brilliant artist's passing to attack his faith. I saw Dan in 1990 and was blown away by his talent and thoughful songwriting.

i think race is involved because i see a chevy 327 with hooker headers in the background lined up ready to run the quarter against a 390 ford fairlane 4 speed running through ez flows....thats about as race- involved as this song gets..because there is certainly no reference in the lyrics to any other kind..+-

What does race have to do with this song?? Am I missing something here. The lyrics are not racial, they're just about lonely or lost people seeking another person for comfort... Right??
coleyman1 3 years ago
Well, you are right about the lyrics but the video has a message also. Some may not see it the way I am but the Asian girl and caucasian male seem to be fighting racism like the guy throwing the bottle at the asian man on the sidewalk. That is the way I read it though.
garvinzoom 3 years ago
Why does everyone see races? I saw a boy that was mad at his girlfriend's dad because he would not let her see him again. Wild young man, girl in love, sensible and overprotective father. Could the race problem be that we create the division mostly in our own heads?? I think so. I can't help what color I am nor can you. So why would I even concern myself with that thought? You either like me or not. I you do, great! If not, and don't want to get to know me, then, so be it.
coleyman1 3 years ago
Okay, I had not seen the video that way but I can see what you are saying. I also agree with your in our own head comment, we are a flawed race of man that sometimes do judge people by there race and background. If we could be blind to these things it would be a better world but we are not.
garvinzoom 3 years ago
Race is an element but it's presented as just one of the things that cause pain and that people seek solace from in expressions of love towards their partner.
