Shameless to say, I just bought the DVDs. I'm not all proud of doing it, because I know they are copies of the VHS... but I'll never get a chance to get the real ones in the near future otherwise, I'm sure...
I see... thanks for letting me now... I guess you have to have the DVDs/VHS to really get the most out of it. So I'll go for the DVDs when they get available one way or the other.
Don't get me wrong, it's still a very valuable book, and John Barton is an excellent director; but much of it is taken verbatim from the TV progs, so you get things like this:
PORTIA (Sinead Cusack): Is your name Shylock?
SHLOCK (David Suchet): Shylock is my name.
etc, etc - a dialogue of about a dozen lines.
Then you get some direction from JB:
Hold it there for a moment: we've got it far too gentle, etc etc.
In other words, whatever the actors do differently, there is no difference in what is printed on the page. Sections like these, in my opinion, are only of use as a companion piece to the video.
It can be an advantage to follow the spoken dialogue simultaneously with a text, perhaps especially for foreign language readers/viewers, but it really doesn't work without the visual and hearing aspect, I guess...
Perhaps if the BBC starts to realise how much interest there is, and how much revenue will be lost if people resign themselves to getting pirate copies, they might do something about publishing the series.
I agree, it ought to be out there for everyone interested. I've seen it on e-bay on affordable DVDs, but I don't know if they were genuine, and they were only for sale in the US - and the videos are much too expensive.
Yes, do go for the DVDs on Ebay. They are not top quality, but they are good enough and you get to see the master at work. I have enjoyed them very much. It is also great to see all of the wonderful actors when they were so young.
Don't pay a lot for them. They seem to show up fairly often, so just bide your time.
Hi Shabrin, Amazon now has the series on DVD listed for release in June. I'll be interested to see if it contains extras and what the format is. This is long over due for release to the general public.

The book is based on the series, but large parts make little sense as text, unfortunately.

SHLOCK: Shylock is my name.

I see your point...

I'm glad you pointed that out, thanks!

Thank you for the video.
I am reading the book that accompanied the series.
Do you have the coplete series, and will you be placing it here?

Hi niffnosna,
I think I will read the book, too, it's better than nothing...
I've uploaded one more, but I'm sorry to say that's all I got. I would love to have the whole series.
Best wishes

This series is incredible. It is a shame that it has not been released to the general public.

Hi Shabrin,
I have purchased the Ebay versions and they are not great quality but at least give a person a chance to see this great work.
I have read that John Barton wants then released at a low price, but it looks as if the BBC is making this difficult.
What a shame.

Hi Bob,
Maybe I should go for the DVD's as well, then...
It's very uplifting to hear that John Barton has been working on making them affordable, so at least we have one allied ;)
Best wishes

Thanks for the advice, Bob, I just bought them! I paid $50 incl shipp., I don't know if that's the cheapest, but I thought it was quite fair.
They should be coming my way soon, I look really forward to watch them.
Take care you too
