SImply put, Maggot Brain is one of the most beautiful songs ever written or performed. How one could make a guitar talk like that is phenomenal. I take nothing away from Slash, but given the comparison between the two songs exemplified, the technology available at the time and the talent to use it, Eddie Hazel is the man!

I find it hard to compare because the audio engineering on Gnr records is somewhat 'different' to that of the funkadelic recordings. I think Slash loses some of that 'soul' in the cleanness of the GnR sound.

I love Slash and I will never forget the first time I heard him. I was blown away! Man what a guitar player I remember me thinking. Fast foward to two days ago. I never heard of Eddie Hazel before. I knew of the Funkadelic but I never got into them up until two days ago. My God! I can't believe that I never heard of Eddie Hazel before. @dirkdada Personally I rate them equal for the emotions they put into their best playing, even though they're different people conveying different feelings through different music. And I don't really worry too much about how good a player is technically, so long as he can make me feel whatever it is that he's feeling. You wouldn't rate Muddy Waters, Dave Gilmour or Neil Young very high on a technical level but they can all send shivers down my spine, just like Slash & Eddie.
Honestly, I find it odd that someone would want to compare these two. There is little, if any, similiarity between their two playing styles. For a more modern(ish) rock-based audience, Slash has higher popularity, and there's no doubt he's got talent. However, for putting pure psychedelic chords together and just playing old-school from the soul, Hazel was a god in his age. They're both talented artists that put their hearts, minds, and spirits into their music.
You can't compare Slash and Eddie ..two entirely different styles of playing . Eddie's stuff has more soul by far . The only thing that you might compare is their similar tastes in guitar brands ( Gibson ) ..other than that now way . Love Slash' guitar work but no way can he hold a candle to Eddie .

I've been practicing Maggot Brain for a while. I absolutely love it. It's not very hard but it is filled with emotion and completely blows my mind everytime i hear it.
First off, I have to go with Eddie on this one. He puts so much emotion into his playing, you really feel his personality coming out through every note. Second, to the person who posted this video, you do know that the first two pictures you posted were Bootsy Collins and not Eddie Hazel right? The second picture even has Bootsy holding his Space Bass and not a guitar. You got to do better research than that. It really bothers me when people do that, because Eddie gets misrepresented a lot

@nubiansista4life my vote was for Eddie. I only liked Slash for a short time and that turned out to be because I liked Steve Adler... so it was only in the context of the original lineup. Anyways I'm a major P-Funk fan and have seen them over 20 times since '93. Funny that theres Bootsy pics on this video.

@nickpelkey Sorry! It's good to hear from another fan of Eddie Hazel. I do agree with you about Slash with GnR was I think his greatest period as a guitarist. I can imagine Slash and every guitarists after 1970 being frustrated at being compared to Jimi Hendrix. Thanks for responding and keep it funky!

Last I heard he was born in England to a white Jewish father and a Nigerian mother. Also, he has appeared on several BET awards which I believe he was participating because of his race. Vin Diesel is another actor with Black blood.

I imagine that its tougher in the U.S. as this is a place where there was an attempt to setup an ideology to claim inferiority based on race. In other countries if you are a fraction it doesn't matter and in the U.S. it does. Want to change "race" (which is a silly concept) then fly from Brasil/Brazil to the U.S. being light skinned with a fraction Arican heritage. Crazy. Heck in America they invented the Rapture too. Hmm too isolated?

Watch some of the Europe soccer stars interviews on Youtube and listen to the outright racism they experience during soccer games overseas. At least, America has had a Civil Rights Movement that recognize and identify racial concerns in the U.S. Europe does not place their racial problems in the spotlight.

C'mon guys....Slash may not be as good a Eddie Hazel but listen to Novenber Rain and some of his other solos, the dude can play his ass off. His solos send chills up my spine! He's also one of the greatest rythm guitar players as well, Slash can play his ass. He's definitely a great guitar player and on top of that he possessess one of the most sweetest tones ever!

I love Slash and I will never forget the first time I heard him. I was blown away! Man what a guitar player I remember me thinking. Fast foward to two days ago. I never heard of Eddie Hazel before. I knew of the Funkadelic but I never got into them up until two days ago. My God! I can't believe that I never heard of Eddie Hazel before. This dude reminds me of my guitar hero the one and only: Jimi Hendrix. So therefore my vote goes to Eddie Hazel who's more than just a guitar player. He's unreal.

@dirkdada Personally I rate them equal for the emotions they put into their best playing, even though they're different people conveying different feelings through different music. And I don't really worry too much about how good a player is technically, so long as he can make me feel whatever it is that he's feeling. You wouldn't rate Muddy Waters, Dave Gilmour or Neil Young very high on a technical level but they can all send shivers down my spine, just like Slash & Eddie.

Honestly, I find it odd that someone would want to compare these two. There is little, if any, similiarity between their two playing styles. For a more modern(ish) rock-based audience, Slash has higher popularity, and there's no doubt he's got talent. However, for putting pure psychedelic chords together and just playing old-school from the soul, Hazel was a god in his age. They're both talented artists that put their hearts, minds, and spirits into their music.

You can't compare Slash and Eddie ..two entirely different styles of playing . Eddie's stuff has more soul by far . The only thing that you might compare is their similar tastes in guitar brands ( Gibson ) ..other than that now way . Love Slash' guitar work but no way can he hold a candle to Eddie .

Slash is good, but Eddie's body of work is just far to inovative and larfge in scope to be denied. If you wanted to pose this question about Hazel V. Hendrix there might be more of a debate.

First off, I have to go with Eddie on this one. He puts so much emotion into his playing, you really feel his personality coming out through every note. Second, to the person who posted this video, you do know that the first two pictures you posted were Bootsy Collins and not Eddie Hazel right? The second picture even has Bootsy holding his Space Bass and not a guitar. You got to do better research than that. It really bothers me when people do that, because Eddie gets misrepresented a lot
