  • Eddie wins

  • Eddie hazel is in a room of his own slash is in the back room getting ready to support some up and coming act as eddie is supporting the big acts and becoming one him, self

  • tell you an underated guitarist sugerfoot from the ohioplayers, listen to the song called what the hell its off their fire lp, listen to the song and people realise how underated sugerfoot bonner is he deserves alot of credit for his and the ohioplayers bought to the funk rock era. they blended jazz, rock, funk into what the hell song

  • Slash? Hahaha now that's funny. This isn't even close.

  • um let me see by unanamus decision EDDIE HAZEL!!!!!!!

  • Apples and oranges! Eddie has it!

  • hazel takes the cake on this one, BY FAR

  • Eddie Hazel is what Jimi Hendrix would have become.

After Jimi left the Experience, he formed the Gypsy Sun And Rainbows where he ventured off into the FUNK.

  • Hazel all the way.

  • Slash is English

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah, But Jimmy Page....come on!

  • Slash and Jimi rule the guitar, Eddie comes in by a nose, he is awesome, but I have to give it to Slash and Jimi.

  • When compared to Hazel there is no comparison ,no feeling whatsoever in Slash's playing just plain dull no feeling.

  • @bobbyz23 i don't agree but i do agree that you can't compare hazel with nobody

  • @Funkdogg I was referring in comparison to Slash ,compared to Hendrix Eddie didnt stand a chance.

  • @bobbyz23 you said that there is no feeling in slah's playing but i disagree. and in my opinion eddie is the closest thing to jimi. i wish they both were still here

  • EDDIE LIGHT YEARS AHEAD OF EVERYONE BAR NONE !

  • eddie hazel is bar none is the better guitar player slash couldn't hold his dirty underpants!

  • Who's Slash?

  • lol second picture is bootsy not eddy xD

  • Its all about SOUL...

  • Eddie by far, not even close

  • Slash is kind of overrated, in my opinion. No one has or will ever have Eddie's soul.

  • People should just KNOW that Eddie Hazel makes everyone his bitch. It's a crying riot in the streets kinda shame that no one even knows about his solo album! Back in print! Back in print!

  • Jimi Hendrix is also Eddie's bitch

  • come on man, that's like godzilla vs bambee, and bambee is wearing the tophat.

  • Comment removed

  • Eddie was 2nd only 2 Jimi!

  • maggotbrains background guitar melody is from,"how can you mend, a broken heart" written by the BEE-GEES,, an covered by Al Green,,.the effects are a1969 Watkins of england Echo-Plex,, First used by Hendrix, who first harnassed feedback from tube amplifiers.. So I guess eddie can be credited with rippin off samples from other artists an calling it their own....

  • This is a joke right? Slash is good but theres nothing special about him.

  • Let's add another factor here. Eddie Hazel was 20 when this was recorded. How old is Slash in this video? Eddie Hazel tops all. (Hendrix fans need not respond, this isn't a playoff between Eddie and Jimi)

  • Carlos Santana!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • The ONLY GOOD competition would be between Eddie Hazel & Jimi Hendrix HANDS DOWN!

  • Eddie, the greatest WORLD guitarist

  • Hendrix doesnt even COMPARE to Michael Hampton and Eddie Hazel... Hendrix is shit next to Funkadelic...

  • @Harttus (LOL!!!!!!) The musically retarded have prevailed once again. You funkadummies are the most stupid motherf*%kers on the planet. With out Jimi there wouldn't have been a Eddie Hazel or Michael Hampton. Put down the joint fool!!!

  • @Peelick umad?

  • @Harttus Naw, just glad I know better.......

  • @Peelick Naw Umad xD

  • @Harttus Do u speak english..?

  • @Harttus I love Hazel man but Hendrix is better than everybody.

  • First two photos it Bootsy Collins it not Hazel

  • completely different styles of guitar. how about we appreciate the art of music instead of having arguments over opinions

  • why is there a bunch of pictures of Bootsy at the start? D'oh

  • eddie by far!

  • Well after reading some of these blogs, it appears that Slash is not truely american. Now for someone to put Slash up there against Eddie, seems like the question should be changed as to who is the better BLACK guitarist? Not taking anything away from Slash, but there are alot of u.s.white cats out there who can rip it better. Also you can't forget Carlos Santana. Just think if the question WAS who's a better black guitarist?

    Hendrix,Hazel,Isley,Hampton,Prince, Reid,or Morello. rocknsoulbro

  • I agree with angryredcom's question of debate between : Eddie Hazel vs. Ernie Isley.

BOTH of these cats put all of their soul into their playing!!

Now I don't know if somebody was copying someone else's style, but it's interesting that both of these cats almost look like each other too!

. (maybe that's just my opinion). I think Ernie is right up there with Eddie.

    rocknsoulbro.

  • Slash is a pathetic excuse for a guitarist.

  • @Yamboozle no not really its just not in eddies league

  • CHOPPED SLASH DOWN, WITH THE EDGE OF MY HAND.....

  • WHY YOU GOT PICTURES OF BOOTSY ON HERE???? HAZEL- DA WINNA !!!

  • Who the fuck is slash? LOL

  • Who the fuck would even consider Slash as the greatest American guitarist? What kind of a joke is that? Eddie Hazel blows Slash out of the water by so far it's not even comprehensible. Eddie Hazel is better than Hendrix, too, he just doesn't get the credit he deserves because Hendrix was more popular.

Don't get me wrong...I'm a fan of Hendrix but Hazel's work with Funkadelic is like the fucking holy grail of guitar work, and Slash is a Dixie Cup with piss in it.

    Fuck Slash.

  • @LobotomyMadeEasy this comment is pure WIN.

  • @LobotomyMadeEasy I agree with you 100%.

  • Eddie Hazel is in a different building slash is in the basement compared to eddie .

God bless hendrix 2 Eddie Hazel.....

  • this is the worst video on youtube. eddie is the man, slash is decent. Duane Allman is the most American guitarist if not the best

  • Eddie Hazel is... is awesome,

  • First of all, I'm not your dude, but a female who love to listen to guitar solos. Second, I lived in Europe for some time and I gave my personal opinion to a specific user's response directed towards me. My opinion is racism is downplayed in Europe which gives an impression that race relations are perfect. Basically, I was saying Europe has racial problems (like America), but I'd prefer to live in America.

  • Slash is British by birth. Change the title of this video.

  • Not a good comparison we don't know where Eddie would be progression wise today so Slash would win because of his knowledge and for you people who think different my friend Michael Hampton is awesome but Prince will get in that azz! Mike can understand the Grimoires but prince is more fluent I watched (Love) both at work!

  • thank you!

  • Video is invalid. Slash is from Burslem, which is in Stoke, which is in England.

    Thank you, goodnight.

    But I prefer Eddie anyway.

  • Eddie

  • ummmm..... Eddie, no shadow of a doubt.

  • ummmm..... Eddie, no shadow of a doubt.

  • Jimi Hendrix wins.

  • Slash is Eddie's bitch!

  • @chrisw2546 you daaamm right!! slash couldn't hold eddie's guitar or jock strap. the only diffrents is the technology

  • @chrisw2546 slash would concure.

  • the one and only funkateer.R.I.P Eddie.

  • Eddie Hazel. All he needed was a little rhythm guitar to back him and he made something that murdered all other guitar solos. Maggot Brain is my favorite solo/movie/story.

  • I do not think slash can even be compared to Hazel at all.... its kinda like comparing a guitar master with a guitar noob... Like if you compare Hazel with Hendrix, then I think there can be some comparison.... but slash... no.... he doesn't even deserved to be compared

  • Eddie muthafuckin Hazel!! Who else? LMFAO!!!

  • eddie.... even slash would say so.

  • Slash.

  • please don't make such a debate. I love em both for different reasons

  • @Apopholis I think you got the concept of this video wrong. It's not about who is better, but to show that both are awesome.

  • Slash Is my Boy ! hats off

But Eddie Is the Man !

    P-Funk 4 eva

  • SLASH IS NOT AMERICAN

  • I'm a huge GNR and Slash fan but Eddie was on an entirely different level. Rumor is that George Clinton told Eddie to play Maggot Brain as if he had just got word of his mother dying. I'm sure he's up in heaven jamming with Jimi right now. Such a shame they never got a chance to collaborate on any songs. :)

  • ... Many great athletes say they would pay to see another ... ?

I would pay and pay dearly ... to see Eddie Hazel ... and I can't play Guitar.

  • no contest eddie kicks ass

  • SImply put, Maggot Brain is one of the most beautiful songs ever written or performed. How one could make a guitar talk like that is phenomenal. I take nothing away from Slash, but given the comparison between the two songs exemplified, the technology available at the time and the talent to use it, Eddie Hazel is the man!

  • @USBP464 I agree, 100%!

  • Why are the first two photos of Bootsy Collins? He wasn't even in Funkadelic when this album came out.

  • two different animals and both are the greatest in what they do.high honors to both.

  • They both have soul, they both are not American however. Slash is from the UK.

I find it hard to compare because the audio engineering on Gnr records is somewhat 'different' to that of the funkadelic recordings. I think Slash loses some of that 'soul' in the cleanness of the GnR sound.

  • This is laughable. Truly. Eddie Hazel completely owns Slash. Of course Hendrix is better than both, but Hazel is up there.

  • @metalliczombie very well said

  • Slash was from Stoke in the United Kingdom.

    Eddie Hazel was better.

  • I disagree with everything you guys have said about Slash, especially on the Hey Joe performance, and personally I think i'd have to vote Slash also, but I still put Eddie Hazel up there man. Both of them are incredible. Slash definately does have soul in his playing.

  • continued: I actually realised that a song that simple which was beautifully played by Jimi (who, lets face it was shit hot, but technically not the best) was beyond Slash, he doesnt have the ability to stop, forget about over playing the damn pentatonic, stop the pinches, drop the mini metal fills AND JUST PLAY THE DAMN SONG WITH FEELING YOU ROBOT.

fuck Slash, fuck him in his stupid frog face

    Eddie 4 life

  • @angryredcom I feel you! Once, you get hooked on Eddie's playing your addicted.

  • No contest Eddie. I liked Slash in the original GnR lineup for Appetite and right after (Lies..) but looking back I fell out of love with GnR after Steve Adler was booted out. The groove and vibe changed. People overlook the drummer, but in this case they shouldn't have because he made them all look good with the buildups and suspense he created. One bone of contention was at a televised Hendrix tribute performace with Mitch Mitchell Slash was totally rude and cut him off when Mitch was speaking

  • @nickpelkey sorry, but Eddie rules!

  • @nubiansista4life my vote was for Eddie. I only liked Slash for a short time and that turned out to be because I liked Steve Adler... so it was only in the context of the original lineup. Anyways I'm a major P-Funk fan and have seen them over 20 times since '93. Funny that theres Bootsy pics on this video.

  • @nickpelkey Sorry! It's good to hear from another fan of Eddie Hazel. I do agree with you about Slash with GnR was I think his greatest period as a guitarist. I can imagine Slash and every guitarists after 1970 being frustrated at being compared to Jimi Hendrix. Thanks for responding and keep it funky!

  • slash gets pissed on

  • I think slash would admit defeat to Hazel. You just can't beat Funkadelic. Slash owns in style though. You can't get away wearing a top hat onstage without someone saying, "Oh so who do you think you are... fucking Slash or something?"

  • Uncle Eddie allllll day!!

  • Last I heard he was born in England to a white Jewish father and a Nigerian mother. Also, he has appeared on several BET awards which I believe he was participating because of his race. Vin Diesel is another actor with Black blood.

  • @nubiansista4life Finding a cultural identity can be tough. I imagine that its tougher in the U.S. as this is a place where there was an attempt to setup an ideology to claim inferiority based on race. In other countries if you are a fraction it doesn't matter and in the U.S. it does. Want to change "race" (which is a silly concept) then fly from Brasil/Brazil to the U.S. being light skinned with a fraction Arican heritage. Crazy. Heck in America they invented the Rapture too. Hmm too isolated?

  • @nickpelkey I think I'll take living in the U.S. anyday over living in Europe! Watch some of the Europe soccer stars interviews on Youtube and listen to the outright racism they experience during soccer games overseas. At least, America has had a Civil Rights Movement that recognize and identify racial concerns in the U.S. Europe does not place their racial problems in the spotlight.

  • @nubiansista4life As a white European (Dane living in England) in mixed marriage I am sorry you feel that way but you are incorrect. It's wrong to class Europe as racist. it's wrong to class Europe as anything. The EU is not like the us, a collection of similar states. It's a collection of dissimilar countries and very few are like another. Some have huge racial issues. Some have few. Many deal with problems head on. Don't tar us all with the same brush brother.

  • Eddie Hazel vs Ernie Isley NOW THATS A FUCKING QUESTION

  • @angryredcom Hmmm true. Ernie got guitar lessons from Jimi Hendrix.

  • @nickpelkey , Apparently they weren't lessons, so much as jam sessions between different tiers of skill at the time

  • Someone please hip me to the name of this track and where I can find it?

  • @nubiansista4life Mother Earth is pregnant for the 3rd time, cause ya'll gone knockered her up... the track is called Maggot Brain, from the album of the same name or on any best of P-Funk cd. It's an Epic solo piece that stomps the shit outta Freebird.

Written by GHd, approved by Jesus, sent to earth by the angel Gabriel, and Mastered by the one and only Eddie Fucking Hazel

Eat shit slash you emotionless no soul stupid hair hat and glasses gimp.

  • Maybe he's showing Bootsy at the beginning because he could be playing bass to Eddie's lovely, lovely guitar lead.

  • I like Eddie Hazel's style better, but I just say you got two great African-American guitarist.

  • @nubiansista4life since when was slash african?

  • @angryredcom Whats interesting here is how you have the Halfrican Slash. Maybe put him up against another Halfrican like Jimi.. who was also a little Cherokee if I recall. Or heck Bob Marley he's a Halfrican. We could really get into some heavy sociology. Who would have thought this forum could bring up so much?!

  • @nickpelkey ; Shit, put him up against an albino-korean, it won't change the fact that he's a souless boring repetitive player. He's over rated in every possible way. I actually used to like him, until he did a cover of Hey Joe on Jimi's bday afew years ago; that was what made me hate him so much, it was appaling,

  • Eddie tha muthafucking king Hazel

  • hmmm , well if we really have to go down that very annoying and totally pointless road of artist versus artist then imo eddie wins hands down , its all horses for courses though isnt it? the title says greatest american guitarist ....isnt slash british ? sure he is. Also none of these imo are the greatest guitarist , so as i said pointless lol

  • Hello, Slash is English. Do some research. X

  • eddie got that

  • man its hard to compare different eras and all, and slash is a GREAT guitarist, and i love his music but good Lord,

Eddie Hazel is a genius, listen to live shows of them both, eddie can play endlessly and scat and whatever else he wants and never gets boring or repeats himself. not a fair comparison but interesting

  • on first two pictures we see bootsy, not eddie, what the fuck ?

  • Comment removed

  • anyone who knows anything knows it's Eddie Hazel and everybody else.

  • 64 of the greatest Guitarists from Seattle, Washington to Miami, Florida, via Stoke.

  • how can you compare this stilted lifeless crap from GNR with the extraordinary soulful performance of Eddie Hazel . Slash is a giant bore ... spare us

  • im sure slash would be flattered that anyone would even try to make the comparison, but honestly, there isnt one.

  • I love Slash and I will never forget the first time I heard him. I was blown away! Man what a guitar player I remember me thinking. Fast foward to two days ago. I never heard of Eddie Hazel before. I knew of the Funkadelic but I never got into them up until two days ago. My God! I can't believe that I never heard of Eddie Hazel before. This dude reminds me of my guitar hero the one and only: Jimi Hendrix. So therefore my vote goes to Eddie Hazel who's more than just a guitar player. He's unreal.

  • @boxingin Same sentiments about Eddie Hazel...I picked up some old Funkadelic about two years ago and was blown away by this dude.

  • @Trajan1967 Eddie is a mind blowing guitarist!

  • @boxingin I know what your going through. Once your introduced to Eddie Hazel your hooked. Who needs drugs when you listen to King Funkadelic play!

  • @nubiansista4life Dude . . . America is racist. lol

  • The first two pictures are Bootsy Collins, not Eddie Hazel

  • i love them both!!!! plus steve vai, micheal hampton, jimi and more

  • Maybe Hazel vs Prince? both are excellent funk guitarist and worthy of a debate. Slash and Buckethead are good comparisons...but please dont compare Slash with Hazel!

  • slash and buckethead arent really much more alike than slash and hazel if you've heard enough of bucketheads material. and like this comparison, that one is also no contest. buckethead wins, hands down.

  • @fochutoob Wins what, a speeding contest? lol

  • @proud2Bpommy comparing slash with Buckethead is just as bad as this video...Buckethead is a guitar virtuoso who mastered the art of guitar in every way possible while slash is just some random drunk.

besides both of them being in gnr, they have absolutely nothing in common.

  • slash may technically be better but he can't put his emotions into his guitar playing like eddie hazel.

  • @dirkdada Personally I rate them equal for the emotions they put into their best playing, even though they're different people conveying different feelings through different music. And I don't really worry too much about how good a player is technically, so long as he can make me feel whatever it is that he's feeling. You wouldn't rate Muddy Waters, Dave Gilmour or Neil Young very high on a technical level but they can all send shivers down my spine, just like Slash & Eddie.

  • Honestly, I find it odd that someone would want to compare these two. There is little, if any, similiarity between their two playing styles. For a more modern(ish) rock-based audience, Slash has higher popularity, and there's no doubt he's got talent. However, for putting pure psychedelic chords together and just playing old-school from the soul, Hazel was a god in his age. They're both talented artists that put their hearts, minds, and spirits into their music.

  • You can't compare Slash and Eddie ..two entirely different styles of playing . Eddie's stuff has more soul by far . The only thing that you might compare is their similar tastes in guitar brands ( Gibson ) ..other than that now way . Love Slash' guitar work but no way can he hold a candle to Eddie .

  • @Bensidhe How can you not compare them? One is good and the other is terrible.

  • i'm amazed that someone would even think to compare them, no offense to Slash, but if asked i can only imagine he would instantly concede the point. Slash is good, but Eddie's body of work is just far to inovative and larfge in scope to be denied. If you wanted to pose this question about Hazel V. Hendrix there might be more of a debate.

  • Eddie is the man on this one:)

  • Hazel Wins

  • Hard choice, but you have to respect legends....So obviously Eddie. Nice choice for a Slash solo. \m/

  • Please! That's like picking Mcdonalds over Soul Food. Eddie/PURE SOUL FOOD, Slash/Quarter Pounder-n-Kidzs Meal. Fool, there is no COMPARISON!

  • @TexasTornado187, well said!

  • Slash is a decent guitarist, but he can't fuck wit Eddie.

  • Comment removed

  • Comment removed

  • Somewhere in the world even Slash is laughing at this, I guarentee he himself knows that he can't compare to the legend that is Eddie Hazel.

  • no brainer. eddie sharts on slash's face

  • Eddie hands down

  • wtf is the song

  • There is no better, music is subjective.

Who the fuck am I kidding, is this some kind of joke? EDDIE ALL THE WAY!!!

  • ...you can't compare... slash is not even close to eddie... slashs lick are the same... like from start to now.. eddies different all the time

  • I've been practicing Maggot Brain for a while. I absolutely love it. It's not very hard but it is filled with emotion and completely blows my mind everytime i hear it.

  • slash can play!!! Hazel make u forget everything around except his notes piercing ur soul.

  • Why would you even compare these two??? That's like bringing a knife to a gun fight.Slash will NEVERRRRR Match up to EDDIE. HAHAHA. EDDIE FOREVER

  • Eddie eats Slash for lunch! Oh by the way-some of those pics r of Bootsy not Eddie.

  • Eddie Owns Slash in every way.

  • @Apopholis true

  • eddie hazel baby!

  • Well what can I Say the music speaks for its self.

  • Slash is very good but he's still merely a student of guitarists in Eddie's caliber.

  • Slash is indeed good, but you gotta give props to the late Eddie Hazel..Maggot Brain is a classic; even Slash knows he can't fuck with that.

  • Michael Hampton is the man who carries Eddies torch !

  • Maggot Brain alone beats Slash. It's an epiphany of sound. Not to say I don't love Slash, though.

  • First off, I have to go with Eddie on this one. He puts so much emotion into his playing, you really feel his personality coming out through every note. Second, to the person who posted this video, you do know that the first two pictures you posted were Bootsy Collins and not Eddie Hazel right? The second picture even has Bootsy holding his Space Bass and not a guitar. You got to do better research than that. It really bothers me when people do that, because Eddie gets misrepresented a lot

  • @BoogieLoco YOU SAID THAT RIGHT. EDDIE PUTS HIS HEART AND SOUL

    INTO.

  • hazel for me. by the way listen to 'frantic moment' and 'so goes the story' on his 'smeero' album.

  • Eddie - not even close

  • This video was pretty good, up till 1:56, then it blew.

  • Buckethead
