Federer's backhand does exactly what he wants it to do... and that is set up a forehand winner.

People like Gasquet go for straight out backhand winners.

Federer puts you in a position where you can't do anything against his forehand or drop shot.

So in essence, his backhand is quite effective and if you go to it, thinking it is weak... prepare to lose.

When I was at a tennis academy, we nearly had the same drill except we used tennis ball cans and stack them as pyramids and we hit them quite often and he is a professional. Any top 200 player has a good enough backhand to be able to hit the target every single time without missing. You really think if he actually missed that much that he would be a pro? well, just because roger spray´s ball´s on his backhand at times, doesn´t mean his backhand is less efficient, when he hit´s it good, it´s a very solid and efficient shot.. you have to consider that his raquet head size is very small as well, compared to the other player´s you just mentioned, which probably just makes them a bit more consistent than roger, considering the bigger head size´s they use.

As someone who hits with a one-handed backhand, I can tell you that it is a very difficult shot. Its not stable like a two handed backhand, but it does provide more power and better net skills because you move forward more often. Whenever I get a backhand, I do what I can to twist around it and hit a forehand, but when I can't, I hit a backhand. This is exactly the case with Rog. Rog has an AMAZING one hander, low balls, waist level balls, high balls are all easy for him. Only Nadal's heavy...

Trust me, Rog's backhand is one of the most versatile shots in the game, and the scary thing is that is his weaker (not weak) shot. It's not a strength but its not a weakness is the deal with Rog's backhand.
