Great recording. So nice to have professional audio and video on You Tube. What's up with the bass player's gloves? He's a fine player but just curious about the "bass-ball" gloves.
@StephenThomsonMoore again - listen to the guitar on my video "Criminal Mind" for an example of simulated tube amp distortion with the guitar plugged straight into the mixing board. It's OK, but not the real thing of you are familiar with real tube amps.
Husband is so loose and easy with it all, oozing talent and joy. That guitar is distorting a bit, probably a cheap one, but apart from that... Thanks for the credits, didn't know of Ranjid, but he can stay!
@StephenThomsonMoore if you are referring to my comment, I know what I am talking about. Bitches brew etc. was recorded using a semi-acoustic jazz guitar into (probly) a Marshall tube amp with all that that entails. It's wonderful. For the last 10 years or so JM has been playing with Godin guitars plugged directly into a Mac with tube amp simulating software. He know's what he's doing. My point is that the distortion is not as convincing or pleasant as either For the One (2010) or Bitches Brew
Guitar "horribly distorted"? Are you aware that controlled distortion is a among the most popular effects for modern electric guitar? This is jazz fusion, not the jazz of Joe Pass, or Herb Ellis.
@Gregorypeckory Well, duh... For the last 10 years or so JM has been playing with Godin guitars plugged directly into a Mac with tube amp simulating software. He know's what he's doing. My point here is that the distortion is not as convincing or pleasant as either, for example the To the One CD (2010) or his performance at Crossroads 2007 (Maharina - wonderful sound!). It may simply be that it's too forward in the mix on ths recording, which is beyond his control.
@filtecuk Okay, no insult intended, but you used the phrase "horribly distorted", so I didn't know you meant you found this particular flavor of distortion displeasing. I thought you meant you were an old school jazzer who didn't like distortion. It isn't my favorite tone, but I wouldn't call it horrible-still sounds pretty good to me. Funny how emphatic we get about tone preferences, but it's all good.
@Gregorypeckory None taken - I phrased it badly - what I originally meant was "distorted but not in the usual pleasant way"! On listening to this vid again, I think the problem is one of clipping, either at the mixing desk level (input set too high) or into the camcorder or whatever (likewise). Which the musicians would not have been aware of. There is one instance of his tone I didn't like, and that was when he was playing his Mike Sabre guitar (see Crossroads 2004)
Thanks for posting this. I read complaints from the Marciac concert (just after this one) that the sound was too loud and JM's guitar was painfully forward in the mix. Was this the case here? The guitar is horribly distorted.

@jwklbm326 The gloves are probably to soften the sound of the bass.

A tiny touch of reverb on that guitar wouldn't hurt in my opinion.
This band sounds amazing anyway!

@SimsulatedId Not exactly a cheap guitar. John amongst others plays Godin guitars - like in this clip.

@filtecuk For some unknown reason his tone's been getting worse and worse. Must say I find it difficult to listen to his recent live recordings.
