Yep, Lovett is an amazing storyteller and musician. His quirky charm is almost eclipsed by his music once he starts playing onstage. Seriously under-rated in the U.S. But his real strength and best qualities are his integrity and humility....a true gentleman of the finest order.
He'd be a hell of a lot cooler if he were Canadian instead of Texan but he's badass all the same. Even if he is from the worst, most embarassing state in America
@TeamJacob57 omg, Jake. You must have been slipping some hallucinogenic 'shrooms into your salad last month! Surely you haven't forgotten your U.S. history. Yes, other states have been a country! California, like Texas, was also a republic before it became a part of the U.S. Our flag even has the words, "California Republic" written on it. So please tell us that you are not a US citizen; because at least that might go a long way toward explaining your ignorance.
@3catmandu NO! Texas was the only state that downgraded from a country. The "California Republic" was a 26 day rebellion. They declared independence, but never had a government or actually became a country. Maybe you should actually know what you're talking about before you call other people stupid.
@TeamJacob57 first and foremost, I did not call you stupid. Read it again. Secondly, you are mistaken... again! Long before it was part of the U.S.A., California was part of two other countries at separate times, namely Spain and Mexico. By the late 18th century, it was a colonized territory of Spain and although still a pioneer frontier, was under the auspices of a legal, formal and developed government. As such, California’s citizens enjoyed some of the most enlightened rights of those times.
@TeamJacob57 In 1821, California (a.k.a. Alta California) became part of Mexico when it won its independence from Spain. Again, Californians enjoyed a legal, formal and developed government. In 1846, the Mexican-American War broke out and shortly thereafter California declared its independence as the Republic of California. In 1850, two years after the end of the Mexican-American war, Mexico ceded to the U.S.A. California and New Mexico in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
@3catmandu California declared its self independent before the news of the Mexican-American War reached the few colonists. Hardly anyone in Alta California was behind the revolt. After 26 days, American troops reached Alta California, and the "revolution" was halted in the aspiration of joining the United States. If you can call that a Country, then sure... be proud of it.. But to be a country, technically, you must be recognized by other major countries. California was never.
I'm from Canada and have been a fan of Lyle's for awhile. I went to Texas for the first time recently and found out what he's been talking about. The southern hospitality was so real it almost shocked me!
@browne335 I'm sure Lyle can afford it...besides, as a musician I can tell you that as long as the rent is paid, and the electric is on, you play for the sheer joy of playing. Yeah the money can be good or bad, but that's what you choose to do.
And he shared a duplex w/ Robert Earl Keen behind "Northgate". The two of them got together and I don't think either graduated. May'be REK did, I think he hung around there and worked for "ole George Boyett to pay for his semesters. Listen to his "Porch Song". A little more detail there. Hellava song it is. Going to look it up now.
the pianoat (2:40) preparing the guitar solo (at 3:03) is to die for! Thank you for that wonderful musical moment! (another gold medal moment by Lyle!) Thank you for posting!
I got an email saying this fag is gunna tour with Lords of Acid, and My Life with the Thrill Kill Cult. Thank god the next day we got a correction email saying he was the NEXT day.
@emilyxmiller------ first this "FAG", ain't, he is tough as steel, rides horses on his ranch, dirt bikes, got gored by a bull once, and could probably beat the snot out of every man you know, or wish you could meet, soft spoken doesnt mean soft bodied, piss off punk
@emilyxmiller --there are many different styles of fine music out there. If you limit yourself to only one genre you are cheating yourself. Open your mind--open your ears. I have Thrill Kill cds right next to Lyle Lovett and Sham 69. (my guess is you don't know who they are). Quit trying to be "cool" and listen to something new.
I saw Lyle in Philadelphia in 2006 (I think) with Joe Ely, etc. Although Lyle was the "big name" he was very humble and gracious. It was like sitting in his living room with his friends jamming with him. Great night!
'I love everybody' and 'Joshua Judges Ruth'. Do albums get much better, much more intelligent than these. Wicked wit. I just wish he would come play a gig in London again soon.
The ex and I saw him live at the Johnny Carson show in '89 and he totally smoked the place. He did "She's Ugly From the Front" and "Here I Am." There are no words to describe it! Thanks for sharing this.
We were lucky enough to see him on June 26th 2008 in Porland, Maine. A great venue for him at Merrill Auditorium......it was only our second show but another great one.
Saw this tour at the Rialto Square Theater in Joliet,IL ////brought tears to my eyes. Drove the sound guys back from a restaurant in my limo.
