I've been ice fishing for years and have yet to catch a cat... I'm fishing near bottom with ruby red live minnows and slay bluegill and crappie but no catfish. What do I need to change?
Before you fellas ask how we got Shovelheads and Blues over 20 pounds including my buddy Frnak's 58 pounder out of a 6 inch hole- we bring a chainsaw!
We mark it with four sticks with orange flags so people can see the hole and not fall through. Safety first, I hope we have another decent ice season down here this year! I'll sit out there all day and night on a bucket watching a bobber. We have a few nice ponds with slab readers and bluegills that are less easy to catch during summer.
should be called "Ice fishing little kitten", it looks to be 5-6lb tops... not at least. still, nice vid though. doesn't have to be a big fish to have a bad of laughs =)
Catch channels ice fishing all winter. In the hio it's the best time of year for size and quanity for channels and blue cats. Every couple years I'll get a Flathead to bite but they stay dormant untill tthe water hits 50 degrees or so. Even then there slugish.
@tuanie1 because if you use a big rod your not likely to see were the fish is if you get it also the rod is long so you will have too be standing like 6 feet away and that way you wont be able to grab the fish when you reel it in.
Scared of a little old catfish. HAHA GRAB that sucker, did you see how he slipped a finger in under the gill slot? My 5 year old would have had him up through the hole 3 runs ago! lucky he didn't break you off!
nice. I saw a guy on Oneida lake in upstate NY bring a big cat through a 10" hole and it wouldn't come though. You could tell as he was pulling he was breaking ribs on the fish. I've never caught cats though the ice (never targeted them), but i have caught a few nice burbot.
i kinda made my own right after i commented the vid but it sucks its a spring i got from a pen then took a metal hoop and attached it to my jiggin rod
I picked them up at farm and fleet you can also get them at gander mountian they are made by frabill I believe you may be able to buy them on line at their website.
Shovelhead@channelcat21 I fish for cats year round open water or hard water.I live in the Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky area so there are cats a plenty. Shad works for all three, skipjack's great if it's fresh. On hardwater trips we focuse on fish high up on the vex. Channels and Largemouths around here swim a few feet from the surface to feed. Minnows live and chunked work good. Shad or creek chubs are money if you can find them. We caught several last season over 20 pounds. Be patient!!!
