There is really no point in keeping Paulson alive because he leaves like Somah so really you can keep them till the end but really if you want rare items on Paulson and shotgun ammo from Somah (I don't like the combat shotgun so I didn't bother taking it.) you should kill them both BEFORE they leave or you will never see them again and miss out on items.

Paulson doesn't wear armour so he's really vulnerable. You don't need him as much like you do the others but he's another gun.

He does give you tips on how to complete this mission though, but protecting him might be more of a hassle than just doing it by yourself.
