This finale aria was originally written for a mezzo (a la Rosina in Il Barbiere) but sopranos just can't resist the role. Very interesting to hear it sung by both, here.

I don't know, but to me this aria doesn't seem to attract the high sopranos. Seems very few are hitting the high E flat- or are capable of it to end the aria. Nevertheless, it is quite a tour de force for the woman singer. It is my favorite closing aria in opera in fact. I do believe though Devia did hit the E flat in the third part. I heard a couple others who I thought were capable of it that did not try. Excellent compilation nonetheless.

It is true, not many try the higher ending. That said, I would rather hear a solid ending than a flat or unsupported high note. Swenson, Devia, Christy are the only examples I posted of the higher ending, I believe.

@coloraturafan Kudos on the Gulin. Didn't even know she had sung the part. I have a very interesting complete Donna del Lago with Kiri Te Kanawa from the late 60's at the Camden Festival in London, attempting some very adventurous fioriture.
