  • now thats some good music

  • ConAir ♥

  • 3 people cant name the original skynyrd line up.....

  • Never heard this version before. I like it - it's well produced in the studio with a clean dark tone - and the best vocals I ever heard from Ronnie.

That being said, the live version with Billie on keyboards evolves it into the greatest rock song ever. period.

  • i'm just crying..i can't say any words..

  • This is for you ma.

    Nancy Kaley 10/1938-6/2011

  • @rorygaylord I pray for people like you.

  • I was 10 when this song came out......

O lord still gives me shivers every time I listen to it.

  • @Boomerang1424 I think your talking about "Play it pretty for Atlanta". Ronnie would usually say whatever city they were in or Duane Allman. That version that says play it pretty for Atlanta is the recording from One More From the Road, their only live album that was recorded at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA.

  • this is the shit....what a song!!

  • Very interesting.

  • wow cool.....

  • I guess that 1 person dislikes this song Because his parents told him he was a Mistake, cause his Mom was having Sex to this Song then he was Born !!

  • pretty cool to hear how freebird started out. anyone know what year this was?

  • @monkeys1954 probably late 71 or 72 not exactly sure tho

  • @monkeys1954 I know they were performing it as early as 1968 at LakeShore Jr. High school on the west side of Jacksonville FL. I was there and they played at our dances for $.50 (50 cents) a head.

  • amazing what ive been searching for ! this song fills gaps in my life

  • What year is this from?

  • Amazing

  • so many memories of san andreas :')

  • absaloutly amazing ♥

  • like hearing it for the first time again

  • @1965mustangfb..What about Hendrix being a better guitarist than Allen Collins. Are you kidding me..Hendrix in my opinion is the greatest rock guitarist of all time and several other greats like Page, Beck , Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn would probably agree with me.

  • @joraider08 Hendrix or any of the others wouldn't make a pimple on Allen's ass! :) Have a nice day!!!

  • @waylon972 People being delusional I guess is running pretty rampant these days. You have a great day and year too.

  • @joraider08 If you don't like Skynyrd then don't watch the video. lol! Some people just don't appreciate good Southern Rock or Southern Rock Gods. Wake up and get some taste in music. Have a wonderful life!! :)

  • sounds like the rough draft too me, like not studio edited which is usually better :) nice find

  • this is good but i like the other one better

  • One Of The Best !!!!!

  • this song, music, takes me to where i want to be........

  • the base is awesome in this track

  • There's an outtake of this song some where that Allen Collins breaks a string about thirty seconds into the solo, goes and changes it, and comes back to finish the song. Anybody else heard it?

  • @drummercatD1 yea ive heard it..... haha wen i play freebird on my guitar i can free style for a bit till he comes back....

  • @drummercatD1 yea ive heard it... i got the CD with the demo songs....

  • @drummercatD1 Yeah, it's here on Youtube somewhere.

  • all i can say is the best one yet !

  • I never heard this version, so raw! I loved it

  • Allen Collins #1. Jimi Hendrix 2nd

  • @1965mustangfb Good but not that good.

  • @joraider08 You can't be serious.

  • THIS TAKES ME BACK FURTHER THAN I CARE TO GO SOMETIMES, BUT HER WE GO ANYHOW, LET'EM ROLL

  • Beautiful :D

Very underrated song. You never hear this on the radio where I live, they play all those one hit wonders instead and songs I'd rather forget. Kids these days should be exposed to greatness like this.

  • in memory of my brother

  • nice version long live Skynrd and RIP the gym teacher that motivated the boys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • I noticed all the comments about which album this is off of. I don't know which one this version is, but the version that begins with piano is off of Skynyrd's First: The Complete Muscle Shoals Album

  • The real "original" you say? I don't know about that! I thought the original original I heard had no guitaring as we hear and know it as today, the song just ends normally. I heard that the added guitaring at the end was added on later by Allen Collins. I thought this was going to be the shorter original version, the one found on the green box set which I forget the name now.

  • I was lucky enough to see them in 1971-72 at the old Tampa Memorial Closieum which is now torn down and gone. Man what a lineup that day. This ban is as perfect in concert as they are on the record. Notice i refer to the band as IS. Theres no was for me. They still live

  • Hey bimintwist did you ever see them at greenfield stables or skateland. They were as good as any rock band that performed.I liked them much better as the original band with bob burns and larry junstrom.

  • i am glad my dad played lynyrd skynyrd when i was growing up god i live by what some of the songs say and so far its been a good 19 years close to 20

  • A very classic version and great collection for an immortal song!

  • yeah this was recorded in 1970 billy powell joined in 72'. i got this crom lynyrd skynyrd collectibles. its the most amazing two disc set i ever bought

  • billy powell was invited to the band back in 1972 at the senior prom of the school that I go to right now

  • I thought the original was the one from the muscle shoals album. Anyway, Great Song!

  • This song jjust bleeds Southern Blues, It`s fantastic :)

  • LOVE THIS!!

  • Great one really amazing.

  • wasn't this version on "Skynyrd's First the complete muscle shoal's collection"?

  • It blows me away to hear Ronnie in his younger days. Such an awesome voice. Always had one throughout.... but this is just a shocker.

  • I wish you had posted where this recording was made.

It seems to be post One Percent/Comic Book Club/Westide civic Center days, but before the first breakout album.

I never realized how much this was Allens song until recently.

  • @biminitwst I t agree. I remember them playing at Lakeshore Jr. High on the westside as the One Percent back in 68 before the name change. They played at our Jr. Sr. prom at Ed White (PS 248) in 73. I kid you not!

  • What a great memory that must be, Skynard was something really special :)

The new and improved Skynard can`t compare to :(

  • @Demspissmeoff aint no "a" in skynyrd

  • love this song!

  • Please visit Roll4Rock online. Allen was paralyzed in 1986, and he founded this charity to raise awareness about physical challenges. Money raised by the sale of CD's and from benefit concerts helps Allen's children and helps the foundation to provide opportunities to people who have spinal cord injuries or other physical disabilities. MUSIC FOR PEACE

  • @awesomelink Peace through greater firepower!

  • MY FAVROITE DOLO ITS AWSOME

  • hell house

  • i think any version of this song is gonna be almighty...its just wonderful

  • this must've been before billy joined because the piano is missing in this song

  • the solo in the other version was better.

    glad they went with it

  • BEST SOLO EVER!AND PROBALLY LONGEST

  • This will always be rembered......5*****

    "Free Bird" Excellent!!!

  • sorry about my comment i didn't know he wasn't alive but it was the day that he died that i left the comment

  • "kid100"... Billy Powell died of a heart attack on January 28th 2009 at the age of 56 . He would have been 57 years old on June 3rd 2009. Thought you should know!... If you are confused about the facts, I hope this has helped you.

    Peace

  • RIP billy powell

    we already miss u!!!!

  • this is not my kind of music but at my dad's funeral he requested this song be played and i have grown to like the song. not only because of the memories that this song holds i think it is a wonderful song..

  • beautiful ^^

  • i'm sorry about my comment i didn't know he died at the time

  • Thanks for posting this...what a beautiful band, what a great bunch of rough and tumble musicians. This song is, even before it came out of it's egg shell, a great piece of human sound. The Beatles had Let It Be...the Eagles have Desperado and Lynard Skynard had Freebird. May we all just enjoy the short time they were and the ones left here on this planet to carry on.

I'm thinking back to one Sat pm in Sedalia MO, the Ozark Music Fest there...thanx for sharing all your music and your lives LS.

  • :( Glad I got the chance to see him live in Toronto

    RIP billy

  • billy is still alive

  • nope billys gone now but hey at least ronnie allen steve and al dem a playin again in heaven

    rip

  • RIP BILLY!!

  • It sounds wrong without a piano. Plus, this version just isn't as heavy as the real one. The real version is the one that's a classic.

  • I think there both good

  • R.I.P. Billy,, you'll be sadly missed

  • This is the "Shade Tree" demo of the song. One of the earliest known recordings!

  • The song is not the same without BILLY !

  • epic

  • sick. the real original

  • so which one is the original...this or muscle schoals

  • This. This is before Billy Powell joined the band.

  • well... I know one thing. While Skynyrd was with muscle schoals , they had Ricky Medlocke. It was their first actual "lineup" so i believe this the first version made FULLY, if you know what i'm trying to say. without piano this song isn't as good IMO

  • I think I like this version even better than the commercial release .. this is great stuff

  • the birth of a great song...

thanks for sharing this jewel, Roysteinar. The best Southern stuff comes from Norway...
