I will believe in the principal of plural marriage when someone can point out to me that the polygamist Patriarchs did so because God commanded them to take additional wives. As far as I can tell, it was a secular practice (the Patriarchs were men of their time), but Joseph Smith claimed he was commanded by God to be a polygamous and that it was an eternal principle.
@TheLogos1 "And I gave thee thy master's house, and thy master's wives into thy bosom, and gave thee the house of Israel and of Judah; and if that had been too little, I would moreover have given unto thee such and such things."
@Aryanissupreme 2 Samuel 12:8 Indicates that David inherited Saul's wives, not that David actually married them by God's appointment. It was the custom of the time for the succeeding ruler to receive all of the prior ruler's property and women. This is not a proof that God intends people to practice polygamy. It is contrary to the pattern of marriage established with Adam and Eve and His instructions in Deuteronomy 17:17.
It makes me laugh to read mormon answers on YOUTUBE. twitsted logic, twitsted facts, and twitsted doctrine. why dont you start asking questions to you so called goldy people as to why you have so many doctrines that are not biblical, why cant you see beyond the veil? Its because you are to comfortable and to step out of the box would mean that the true Jesus would devide your house. Jesus said that not me. So don t start bashing Christians until you have your own doctrines worked out.
Once again, Polygamy was never ordained by God. As Shawn said, and I've told many this too since living in Salt Lake, the price of polygamy was chaos and discontent in the family. Everywhere you see polygamy in the Bible, you see strife. It's the consequence of the sin. Notice God said "A man shall leave his father & his mother and cleave unto his WIFE, & they (the husband and wife) shall be one flesh" not WIVES. GENESIS 3:24. This is important because this is what God set up in the beginning.
WRONG MORMON ANSWERMAN. GOD DID NO SUCH THING! As a matter of fact, since DAVID was a KING, GOD'S COMMAND WAS FOR HIM NOT TO HAVE PLURAL WIVES! DEURTERONOMY 17:14-20. Now, in saying that, it may seem the Bible contradicts. However you must read IN THE CONTEXT IT. God was reminding David of how he delivered him and took Saul out of his place and put him in it. In doing that, everything that was Sauls became David's by default. He didn't say "I told you to marry Saul's wives". Read it in context!
In the Old Testament GOD GAVE WIVES to David through prophet Nathan.
2 Sam 12:7 ¶ And Nathan said to David, ...Thus saith the Lord God of Israel, I anointed thee king over Israel, and I delivered thee out of the hand of Saul; 8 And I gave thee thy masters house, and thy masters wives into thy bosom,
There you go. THUS SAITH THE LORD.
There are many who are hinting that polygamy was evil. Abraham was bad, etc. But the BIBLE SAYS that THUS SAITH THE LORD, David's wiveS were given to him.
More importantly, Lamech is the 2nd murderer identified in the Bible. He kills a man for an insult. Thus is demonstrated that polygamy, like murder, has to do w/ unrestrained passions.
Also, Ishmael is said to be a donkey of a man. He is violent & quarrelsome w/ everyone. A trait that is associated w/ his descendents. Multiple wives means multiple families. A father's attentions are thus divided. This leads to the inevitable neglect of the children. The relates to the issue of violence.
@kojekish: & every time the patriarchs fall down into the low habits of the nations, they make trouble for themselves & their heirs. The nations that fight Israel when they return to the promised land are all products of polygamy. Many of them descendents of the patriarchs. I could find only one wife of Joseph in the Bible, Asenath. & the nation of Israel sinned in asking for a king like the nations. The number 666 is associated w/ Solomon's polygamy. Money, sex, & power, the mains of man.
Addendum: The last sentence of preceeding statement of mine is garbled: Please read: "Money, sex & power; the main historic sources of man's sin's."
All of these things are clearly linked to the practice of polygamy in the Bible. Remember, the patriarchs from before the time of Moses lived w/o a clearly defined law. While social custom did define right behavior & some aspects of the law were recognised even then. A certain downward drift of behavior compelled a formal definition of law.
The long haired hippie needs to re-read his Old Testament where God delivered wives to David. Also, Abraham took yet ANOTHER wife. Not just the two.

Polygamy is never a good thing.
Lots of jealousy in those families.
Because there's always one wife who gets totally neglected.
Just read the story of Fonetta Jessop.
