Plato was a historian, not a fictional writer, and made nothing up. Apart from Atlantis, his other texts talk about existing people and historical FACTS. Acc. to Plato, the kings of Atlantis were descended from Poseidon, so presumably other gods helped the Atlantaeans to achieve a high civilisation w/o taking thousands of years. I am of the belief that pyramids around the world are actually of a much older civilization, then native tribes moved into them after the previous civilization was long gone.
Two things suggest this. the correlation of 2012 is in both mayan and egyptian calenders. that is because both pyramids were made from the same civilization.
@ShaolinKungFu93 the number 2 reason is because the difficulty it would require to drag stone blocks( that weigh many tons) over 500 miles. these blocks can't be moves with modern technology, unless cut into peices. Plato tells several stories, and they all illustrate the dialogues in which they occur; none has to have any reality outside the dialogue. Mentioning Egyptian priests as the tellers of the story of Atlantis 9,000 years before is absurd, as this implies an impossible age for Egypt; it looks very like an attempt to make a myth look as if it has the best possible (IOW oldest) authority behind it.

@peterxpoulos I did my own 'search for Atlantis' some years back. Looked into the details of Plato's account in the Critias and the Timaeus. And the oh so many suggested locations. Finally I concluded that, based on a careful reading of Plato's own account, he just made it up. He probably partly based it on real contemporary and folk lore accounts but essentially it is fiction. The closest you would get to the original myth would be Thera. But only as an inspiration. It is fiction.

I think something you have to take into consideration is when you say "..civilization as we understand it." Seems like we are pretty far removed to have a real grasp on how things actually worked. And that is why there are so many mysteries of the ancient world.
@discgolfinrude I guess what I'm talking about is in relation to the ideas of an advanced place like Atlantis, a city/civilization far advanced in terms of its supposed place in time. "As we understand it', for me, means a place that has left hunter/gathering behind and moved to cultivated crops that feed a large, diverse population that doesn't all work for the food. To build cities and have urban residents in a stratified society is different than a large culture of tribes.

And in every case it took 5-6000 years to build that first city. And in that 5000 years, the crops that were domesticated, as well as the changing social structures of the people, spread to other communities. I read somewhere that it was possible Plato misread the age of the city when he received the info from Solon by moving a decimal point, believing he read 9,000 years rather than 900 years (which, when added to the 360 BCE date of Plato's writing of Critias, jibes with a date of 1200 BCE)

@LumberjackHands I think finding any remnants of early human development is awesome. But in the National Geographic special they didn't really tell us anything. Something was there, but was it an early culture or a later city? They kept calling it Atlantis, but they seemed more like salesmen than scientists. At least they gave the show a good title.

There are a lot of pieces found and if you are willing to let go the things we've been thaught at school. We have to come up with an ancient civilization. I think maybe 2% survived and thats what we find todays as baalbek, puma punku etc. Our vision is biased due to our own achievements. @ocerg1111 Food is everything. Without crops, regularly grown and harvested, you can't have a civilization - and we have 3 places on Earth where we know wild plants were independently domesticated. We can see the process of changing from hunter gatherers to the building of cities took 5-6000 years. So a civilization that was around in 9500 BC would have had to start domesticating local plants around 14-15,000 BC. And those crops would be in the archeological record.
@tokarski21 The last ice age ended around 10,000 BC - so it doesn't seem to work. Sure, there were probably large groups of people, cultures like the native North Americans, and we need to find and learn about them, but they weren't part of a civilization. And Plato says that Atlantis was at war with other civilizations, so the whole idea of Atlantis being the first and oldest is something that has evolved over time, and is a fable that has caught our imaginations.

There was a lot of excitement about it, until we got a satellite close, and saw it was just rock formations. My understanding of the lines in the ocean is that they were left in thick sediment by sonar as a ship was mapping the sea floor. What we see isn't always what we get.
yes you should also look at how many things in the bible have since been found. Look at crossing of red sea. Google video of it. They show a place not in the middle but in one of the "fingers" of the sea where evidence of coral formations in the shape of chariots have been found (this makes sense becasue coral eats the wood but makes coral on and in shape of the wood it eats.). they also show metal bands around outer edges of the coral formations (metal rim). Other formations fit biblical.

I always loved the story of Atlantis as a child. There was always something "magical" about this legend of an entire city lost in a single day. Plato was merely retelling oral stories passed down to him.

I don't think that you've proved that Atlantis didn't exist since all you are doing is reiterating what was in the ancient river valley civilizations. You're also presenting under the assumption that Atlantis is even more ancient than Sumeria. The myth that Atlantis is more ancient than Sumeria is probably a hyperbole. Now although you state that in order to prove Atlantis existed we must first find a civilization to which we cannot trace its routes; there's the possibility they died out.
I believe a research worthy topic would be Antarctica. There is historical evidence that a civilization could have existed in Antarctica (ancient maps show of a possible civilization that existed on Antarctica). Then, I believe (this is a guess) in the 1600s or 1700s a cartographer again recorded the possible existence of a civilization in Antarctica. This could very well be Atlantis. Atlantis was supposed to be some lost paradise. Lets not forget the hyperbole given about the New World.

I think the general theory is that Atlantis was much earlier than the Sumerians, and it would be nice to finally say "yes there were earlier civilizations" or "no there weren't". I'd like to someday do a piece on Antarctica, but as far as civilizations there - what I've read says it's been covered in ice for 5 million years.

How do you come to draw conclusions about these time lines and locations where the original crops hail from..i think our present methodology to "date" something is flawed altogether...I do not think Adam and Eve is a symbolic...your conclusion is not a scientific approach to unravelling a mystery..

If it were true that science didn't have the tools to properly date the past, then a lot of what we think we know would be wrong. I'm not sure what your question is. Certainly people were eating the wild wheats and barleys and rice where they were originally growing, but nothing was going to change in terms of a civilization developing until they began consciously planting the bigger and better seeds - which led to domestication of the crops and the beginnings of agriculture.

Really though, they don't have to .. there is enough interesting "lost" history (eg. neolithic cities of Anatolia) as it is that has probably escaped the attention of the "average" person because of the hype focused on Atlantis and other such places. Almost everything I use in my videos is copyrighted material - the idea being that these are the types of images and music I would love to pay for if and when there is a budget to do these on cable. Plato was a historian, not a fictional writer, and made nothing up. Apart from Atlantis, his other texts talk about existing people and historical FACTS. Atlantis submerged and was destroyed by extreme geophysical phenomena, but it existed. Many ancient historians were doubted and ridiculed until the ancient ruins were discovered. Acc. to Plato, the kings of Atlantis were descended from Poseidon, so presumably other gods helped the Atlantaeans to achieve a high civilisation w/o taking thousands of years. I am of the belief that pyramids around the world are actually of a much older civilization, then native tribes moved into them after the previous civilization was long gone.
Two things suggest this. the correlation of 2012 is in both mayan and egyptian calenders. that is because both pyramids were made from the same civilization.

@ShaolinKungFu93 the number 2 reason is because the difficulty it would require to drag stone blocks( that weigh many tons) over 500 miles. these blocks can't be moves with modern technology, unless cut into peices. Plato tells several stories, and they all illustrate the dialogues in which they occur; none has to have any reality outside the dialogue. Mentioning Egyptian priests as the tellers of the story of Atlantis 9,000 years before is absurd, as this implies an impossible age for Egypt; it looks very like an attempt to make a myth look as if it has the best possible (IOW oldest) authority behind it.

@peterxpoulos I did my own 'search for Atlantis' some years back. Looked into the details of Plato's account in the Critias and the Timaeus. And the oh so many suggested locations. Finally I concluded that, based on a careful reading of Plato's own account, he just made it up. He probably partly based it on real contemporary and folk lore accounts but essentially it is fiction. The closest you would get to the original myth would be Thera. But only as an inspiration. It is fiction.

"As we understand it', for me, means a place that has left hunter/gathering behind and moved to cultivated crops that feed a large, diverse population that doesn't all work for the food. I read somewhere that it was possible Plato misread the age of the city when he received the info from Solon by moving a decimal point, believing he read 9,000 years rather than 900 years (which, when added to the 360 BCE date of Plato's writing of Critias, jibes with a date of 1200 BCE)
According to the National Geographic TV special on Atlantis, just recently aired, the its possible site in the Don~ana Park in Spain was washed over by a tsunami circa 1200 BCE (and again around 400 BCE)

@ocerg1111 Food is everything. Without crops, regularly grown and harvested, you can't have a civilization - and we have 3 places on Earth where we know wild plants were independently domesticated. We can see the process of changing from hunter gatherers to the building of cities took 5-6000 years. So a civilization that was around in 9500 BC would have had to start domesticating local plants around 14-15,000 BC. And those crops would be in the archeological record.

Sure, there were probably large groups of people, cultures like the native North Americans, and we need to find and learn about them, but they weren't part of a civilization. And Plato says that Atlantis was at war with other civilizations, so the whole idea of Atlantis being the first and oldest is something that has evolved over time, and is a fable that has caught our imaginations.

There was a lot of excitement about it, until we got a satellite close, and saw it was just rock formations. My understanding of the lines in the ocean is that they were left in thick sediment by sonar as a ship was mapping the sea floor. What we see isn't always what we get.

yes you should also look at how many things in the bible have since been found. Look at crossing of red sea. Google video of it. They show a place not in the middle but in one of the "fingers" of the sea where evidence of coral formations in the shape of chariots have been found (this makes sense becasue coral eats the wood but makes coral on and in shape of the wood it eats.). they also show metal bands around outer edges of the coral formations (metal rim). Other formations fit biblical.

@lugench Yes Train your kids DO NOT EVER EVER EVER ACCEPT the RFID chip into your body.. its the innocent beginning of the method to control each and every person with the clik of the mouse. (think about how computers can do so much so fast). A bad leader could very easily turn off your buying, selling, income, etc etc with the clik of a mouse if you didn't "please" him/her. GA state recently went back to paper ballots to eliminate the electronic voting machines which are easy to scam

I always loved the story of Atlantis as a child. There was always something "magical" about this legend of an entire city lost in a single day. Plato was merely retelling oral stories passed down to him.

Plants do not necessarily follow a culture if the people are refugees from a devastated land - they escape and reinvent their society in the new environment in which they find themselves.

maybe Atlantis is an old cultural memory of the time when the mediterrenian coast was mostly still wild land with scattered semi-agricultural, hunter- gatherer villages, and then the first big walled city was built. and this hazy ancient memory remains.

I don't think that you've proved that Atlantis didn't exist since all you are doing is reiterating what was in the ancient river valley civilizations. You're also presenting under the assumption that Atlantis is even more ancient than Sumeria. The myth that Atlantis is more ancient than Sumeria is probably a hyperbole. Now although you state that in order to prove Atlantis existed we must first find a civilization to which we cannot trace its routes; there's the possibility they died out.

I believe a research worthy topic would be Antarctica. There is historical evidence that a civilization could have existed in Antarctica (ancient maps show of a possible civilization that existed on Antarctica). Then, I believe (this is a guess) in the 1600s or 1700s a cartographer again recorded the possible existence of a civilization in Antarctica. This could very well be Atlantis. Atlantis was supposed to be some lost paradise. Lets not forget the hyperbole given about the New World.

Thanks for your thoughts and comments. I think the general theory is that Atlantis was much earlier than the Sumerians, and it would be nice to finally say "yes there were earlier civilizations" or "no there weren't". I'd like to someday do a piece on Antarctica, but as far as civilizations there - what I've read says it's been covered in ice for 5 million years.

How do you come to draw conclusions about these time lines and locations where the original crops hail from..i think our present methodology to "date" something is flawed altogether...I do not think Adam and Eve is a symbolic...your conclusion is not a scientific approach to unravelling a mystery..

Well, I'm not a scientist. But the pieces of the puzzle fit together pretty good. If it were true that science didn't have the tools to properly date the past, then a lot of what we think we know would be wrong. I think they're in the ballpark, and in this case it's another way of confirming what we already know about the beginnings of civilization. I appreciate hearing your thoughts. I'm not sure what your question is. Certainly people were eating the wild wheats and barleys and rice where they were originally growing, but nothing was going to change in terms of a civilization developing until they began consciously planting the bigger and better seeds - which led to domestication of the crops and the beginnings of agriculture.

one of the "suposebly" sources for the myth/legends of Atlantis was settled in an island we know nothing about its ancient vegetation and animals, the minoic civilization settled between 6-4k BC
who knows what people lived who knows where, and how many natural disasters wiped them out...
I think atlantis if not just myth, would be in my country's islands of Madeira e Acores, since they ARE passed hercules pillars, they are volcanic fromed aswell.

Greetings from Ann Arbor.. I liked your video... I think Atlantis is fun to romanticize about and many people don't want to "let go" of the idea of a lost civilization. Really though, they don't have to .. there is enough interesting "lost" history (eg. neolithic cities of Anatolia) as it is that has probably escaped the attention of the "average" person because of the hype focused on Atlantis and other such places. I am discovering new and interesting things to investigate all of the time!

The story of Atlantis was only intended as an anecdote by Plato. It's obvious if you read the whole text.
The underwater structures you show there, (somewhere along the Japanese coast) are not man made structures. Just odd rock formations. This has been proven.

Certainly an interesting video, though you might want to watch the use of copyrighted material (from music, to photographs, to screenshots of websites) if you want to "take it up a level".
It would also be good if you could address the ocean as a food source. Those in areas such as Greenland don't have much in the way of agriculture.
As for locating it, did Plato ever claim to have seen it? If so, tracing the places he's visited could be a good start. I do like your point about Eden though.

Thanks for the view. Almost everything I use in my videos is copyrighted material - the idea being that these are the types of images and music I would love to pay for if and when there is a budget to do these on cable. The ocean, I think, is a great supplemental food source - but couldn't sustain the development of a civilization. It is worth addressing.
