Agree with the above. They are sight hounds and were bred to hunt and corner lions as a pack. Individuals could not take on a lion. They were not bred nor used in gladiator or coliseum settings. They lure course and are used as protection/police dogs in South Africa. They can be trained to be agressive, but are not naturally so. My two were raised with lab/pointer mixes and love to flush birds. They are very intelligent and loyal.
they hunted lions in packs 0f like 8-12. They just cornered and scared the Lion until the human came with a gun to shoot it, they are not dogs that go kill a lion 1vs1...that's just impossible. They do have a very independant personality as you can imagine because of what they were bread for. I wouldn't reccomend this dog for an apartment. They need alot of exercise. My house has 3 acres of land and mine still digs holes and has far to much energy.
I think there have been a couple of stories reported where the lion did attack the pack of ridgebacks before the shooters arrived, and to there amazement the lion was killed, so was 1 of the dogs, but just the fact that they would chase a lion is bold.
They are fearless dogs, I had 3 of them, and would never get anything but a RR.
Unfortunately it is so hard putting them to sleep when they get old, dont know if I can handle it again.
mate you get baying and holding dogs in all breeds, granted if a dog was to try and hold a lion it would have a hard time, but they have been bred for centuries to hunt lions, most would bay and the ones that decide to hold will either die or the whole pack will get involved, a pack of ridgebacks would be a problem even for a lion. ridgebacks make good holding and baying dogs when out pig hunting, though a pig has thicker skin than a lion, so i would have though a ridgeback would do some damage.
the african lion dog didnt get its nickname from being attacked by lions. its been used for years for that work. the ridge is there because of superstition, people thought that the ridge made the dog a better hunter, its actually a wierd deformation that doesnt appear to cause the dog any problems, but as a result the dogs with ridges were bred from and the others were usually put down, this is still done today by show breeders as without the ridge the dog is worthless for show.
I have one of both one with and one with out they are both super dogs but the thing that gets most ridgeless dogs put down is people prefer the ridges also the africans say that the ridge is where the gods sewed them up after they put the guts in them. The ones that wouldnt hunt were done away with in africa a long time ago so you can bet most of the ridge back lines have forgotten more about hunting than we will ever know let them do their thing
i am happy to see any dog with a good hunting instinct in it, ridgebacks are usually pretty game, and great hunters. but personally its a lurcher for me every time, they just have that speed that most other dogs can only dream of, i currently own a ess x border collie, which has a fairly good hunting instinct, he will chase but is usually too slow to catch, which is fine,as long as he enjoys himself, and occasionally puts a rabbit on the table, i dont mind.
I think there is a lot of confusion? the RR chases after the lions in a pack and barks to confuse them until the hunters with guns catch up to shoot the lion. They do not actually attack.
A growing number of Ridgeback Enthusiast are taking hunting very seriously to strenghten the Gene pool. There is no doubt that the Ridgeback has excellent instinct, What I would like to see in the Next 10 yrs or so is the RR compete for Top Versatile Hunting Dog. As more Breeders add these qualites to the gene pool along with the Excellent conformation and tempermant that have already been engineered, The RR Is going to be something to contend with!!
How cute is that?! :) Looks just like my male pup hes 11 months, and the same color as yours. How old is yours in this video btw? I also have another RR, a year and 11 month old female thats a very rare color, a red livernose.

Here you can learn about breed history.
africanridgebackgroup. org /history. php
You will see that breed was developed almost 1500 years after Roman empire.
If this does not stop you posting ignorant comments, you will be blocked.

"this dog was breed to hunt lions" is correct part of your comment. Gladiator part is not correct.
