Then after realizing where Taiwan actually is, they simply think 'it's just somewhere there in China'. As a second generation who has never lived in Taiwan (just visits), I somehow feel close and tied to the country; maybe growing up in Central America and moving a lot as a kid has led me to identify myself with my heritage.

I hear you there Eric, that's exactly what has been on my mind. Many people ask me what I am and sure enough when I say "Taiwanese", they assume I'm Thai. Then after realizing where Taiwan actually is, they simply think 'it's just somewhere there in China'. As a second generation who has never lived in Taiwan (just visits), I somehow feel close and tied to the country; maybe growing up in Central America and moving a lot as a kid has led me to identify myself with my heritage.

(The descendants of the people who came to Taiwan during the civil war on the mainland, immigrants from the mainland prior to the colonization of the island, etc...)
