Oh god. And I didn't even begin to read Anathem. Hey wait a second I STILL HAVE TWO AWESOME BOOKS TO DISCOVER. This brief moment of extreme joy needed the use of capslock.
Stephenson is one of the most interesting contemporary authors; interesting folk produce interesting stuff. Looking forward to read this one in its original form; this far I've read four Stephenson books, two in English and two in Spanish, translations are not as good as the originals...
btw- his publisher, Harper Collins, has an AuthorTracker which will keep you up to date on everything, that was how I learned of this video as well as what he has been working on. Just go the Harper Collins website.....
I have enjoyed every aspect of every book NS has written. I love the word-craft, the toying with language. I love the social commentary. The humor. The character studies. The intricacy of the created worlds. The math, science, and anthropology interwoven into every page. Each time I pick up a new book by NS, I'm a little frightened that he won't be able to maintain the level of perfection he has attained in previous works. Each time, he has surpassed himself. I'm really looking forward to this.
I'm about halfway through an advanced reader's copy of Reamde.
It's not as good as Anathem (what is?) or Cryptonomicon but still very entertaining. The characters are great and he's still packed it with interesting ideas and humor.
The main weakness in my mind is that the plot doesn't grab me quite as much since it's not as beautifully intricate as either of those books.
There are two things that can make me jizz myself without any form of physical stimulation: one is the news of a new radiohead album, the other is the news of a new novel by Neal Stephenson.
NS is probably my favorite author. I have read everything he has written. Loved Cryptonomicon, and the Baroque cycle It is the characters, the quirks, the flashes of humor. I have found myself laughing out loud at times reading Cryptonomicon or the Baroque cycle, or others.
By the way, I have a scientific education, went to CalTech, and am an Orthopaedic Surgeon, so I relish the mathematical stuff, but if you can't like the characters, the book is not worth reading.
Like many others here, NS is one of the few living authors I recommend to nearly everyone with whom I have a conversation about books. Love the social commentary, the characters, the hold-onto-your-shorts twists and turns, And most of all, the writing. When I realized I had just read about eight pages (in Snow Crash) describing a future bureaucrat's mind-numbing routine to stay compliant with protocol - and was riveted in the reading - I knew this guy could make drying paint seem interesting. B
Thanks for all your work Neal! It's appears that those nights spent lucubrating have left your skin taught and unwrinkled. ;) I need to reread the Diamond Age...
Every time I finish one of your books (and I've read them all, including the Stephen Bury ones) the anticipation for the next one begins. It's great to know the next one is coming soon!
Tech guy's online fantasies get out of hand and this isn't supernatural? My dorm hall in 2009 wasn't that thrilling, so I look forward to your thriller on this! Shiz could get real, haha! Thank you for your work! Can't wait for my pre-order!!
Dude - you are a mad genius and we are lucky to be living in a time when you are writing. I have enjoyed every one of your books, beginning with Snow Crash...keep on writing sir.
Reamde? I'd like to read you! Sounds good Neal, I need some excitement in my life right about now. :D ...boy I hope I will be able to follow the plot...if you say it's full of plot....then it's really full of plot.....
can't wait to read this one.
