Some of the comments below --like pianomano1-- seem clueless. Could anyone be that stupid? Or just spiteful?
The short-coming with Pal Joey is in Joey-- the mean-edged (but interesting) guy in the play, is softened to a flirtacious playboy in order to make the film by 1957 standards. The plot peters out. Some of the songs were cut and replaced by other R&H standards, too. Still and all, an enjoyable outing.
"Still the best"? "Brilliant"? Eh? I just watched a few mins. of this on TV, half an hour ago, and he was singing, correction "talking" a number. I thought "THAT's the legendary Sinatra?" I don't know what song it was, but he was wearing a red jacket and people were dancing. There was not ONE line in that song that you, I, or any karaoke singer couldn't have done. Maybe he excelled in other songs in the film, and if he did then I stand corrected, but on the basis of the song I saw - APPALLING!!
@pianomano1 Jesus, the first time I hear somebody say such a thing about Sinatra's vocal talent! I mean, thee are lots of people who don't like Frank, but at least they admit he could sing like no one, THAT'S WHY HE'S LEGENDARY. Gee..sometimes people are hilarious :@
I really, really wish Gene could've reprised the role that made him famous! It makes me sick that I can't see the original play, but the movie would partially make up for that.
I'd like movies today better if they were only as good as this great trailer that makes you want popcorn as you listen to this great cast singing/acting Rodgers and Hart.
I've watched this movie when i was i think 10yrs old in HBO or cinemax..i don't remember..I didn't realize it was Pal Joey..And when I watched Rita Hayworth there I thought she looked like my aunt..lol..
I just dig that scene where Kim is in his cabin wearing that green dress and does that suggestive tease. The sexiest of its time. Any one have it? LoL
Rita Hayworth is a GASSER. I agree. She's the best. You're right about that, Frankie. I loved Rita's Zip strip in this one, and when Frank sang "Lady Is A Tramp" to her, too funny. Thanks for the clip.
I was thinking more... Joey Porter, Joey Belle, Joey Crawford or Joey Dorsey... but I'll settle for Sinatra... especially if he comes with Kim Novak and Rita Hayworth...

Frank's performance in this movie is the best of his career. He's so freaking brilliant in it but no one ever mentions it!

I love these old trailers where an actor just comes out and talks right to us. Zero pretense. They just approach us and make their case for the film.
