After seeing this interview my entire view on Rodney has changed, i hadnt given much thought to him besides the Ok he started the flatground skating, popping ollies fliptricks and whatnot..but now that im a bit older and have started thinking alot more this guy seems as real as you can get. And you dont need to smoke weed to be intillectual, who knows if he still does or not, that doesnt matter. I wish i could hang with him for a week and just talk and skate, i could learn alot from him.

That whole monk /Buddha image is intentionally promoted here to sell you that image that he is cool and inherently more intelligent than the rest of you. I say "the rest of you" because I made it through puberty and adolescence a long time ago. I don't know if he smokes or has smoked grass before and personally I don't care, but whoever believes that you can just absolutely know that someone hasn't smoked weed before just because they told you so, should really not stay out past 5:30pm.
@jffloyddd If you are referring to Rodney'y monkish attitude, he has always been that way. I don't know where you get the idea that he is promoting that and I don't see how your comment completely relates to the video or comments posted before-hand. He admits to smoking weed with his friends after school while skating for the Bones Brigade back when freestyle was big in his biographical book. The Mutt you see in this video is the Mutt himself, no pose or advertising here. That is Rodney Mullen!
A good-spirited, well-intentioned person. Not sure of the context of this interview...was it originally aimed at skaters?...who would know his reputation in the skate community? If so, then it makes complete sense. Clearly, the youngsters appear to pay their respects. He does talk about himself quite a bit, which isn't monk-like at all. Sort of a "Confucius Say" persona. My conclusion is that this guy was abducted by aliens at an early age, and is still coming to terms with said scenario.
@NINJAstudioz that is NOT true. In this very book, Rodney declares having smoked weed for a short while in his childhood at age ten, to fit in with Jack Iversen and his friends. If I'm wrong, please tell me on what page this was and what edition aof the book you have
@jffloyddd lol i think its pretty obvious he smoked weed and i dont think he'd deny it, and theres no reason to promote himself with a fake attitude when his skating is SO badass, thats why we love Rodney Mullen, cuz he is pretty damn good at what he does not because hes nice.
@Rockdrigo0 Prove to me that Rodney smokes weed and I will take your word for it. In his earlier years... he did because of acceptance, but show me that he is currently doing that right now.
@jffloyddd You know what mate, i can't say i agree with you, but i can understand where you're coming from. So many people do try and do the whole 'Buddha image' thing. But i truely believe this is the real Rodney Mullen. Really, what would he gain by pretending? He's arguably the best street skater in the world and whether he has a 'good' or 'bad' attitude doesn't change that.
@Nickelbacker OMFG WHY DOES EVERYONE SAY HE SMOKED WEED OR THAT HE IS HIGH? You have never smoked weed man, or really weird weed. Rodney seems like a really smart dude in this video! He doesnt look high!
Hes been there and done that. I like the "thought youd be bigger" line cause I felt the same way when I met Arto Saari... Rune Glifberg, was bigger than i thought lol.
Rodney is the man, the king, the mutt, the innovator.
Such a soft spoken humble man too.
The day he dies is a big loss to the world period.
I don't think there will ever be another skater as technically good. To have seen him turn his stance completely opposite footed and make it look indistinguishable is truly awsome. I am not sure the guys interviewing him have a real good grasp of what he has not only accomplished but also given to skateboarding. A true skateboarding legend.
These nerds act like they grasp where rodney is coming from but they have no fucking clue. I have always loved how rodney is so humble about things even though he created almost every trick that is possible now he still acts like his place in skateboarding isn't so great.
@MRRJD2 you cal them tards because they arnt as popular ?or because your jealous they are interviewing him and not you?.. regardless they are just people like you curious and trying to learn from rodneys perspectives on life.
What Rodney said here has changed the way i look on life, seriously. The fact that he skates not for money or fame, but because he loves it is what's most important. True Words of an artist.
@Rockdrigo0 totally agree !! I meant than to me it seems that skateboarders are not the humblest people. And i think is because of the skate culture,i.e, in "the lords of dogtown" shows how they saw skateboardind, they act like hooligans. Is good to be free and discover new things (this is why i skate) but the skate culture still has a lot of this inmature point of view
He is one of the most peaceful ppl ive seen. i can relate to everything he says.. like when he said everyone else was playing sports, and how he said he was isolated from everyone else.. just like me. all my friends would quit skating for a while and play other sports.. i kept skating. I love the simple things in life. Just like Rodney. his voice is so soothing, and hes a humbe person. I hope he lives a great life, becuase hes inspired me so so much. thank you rodney for being my hero!God Bless

@SocialistDemocracy I agree.. I tend to think im a pretty tough guy and I almost cried.. a REAL good soul Rodney is and I hope MORE people can see this video and be enlightened.
But giving such an Idea "success is elusive" to this kid in the mid who try to become a software developer is dangerous. There are people who won't be at peace when working at a late night help desk consultant/or have some other shitty job, because this is slavery as well.
Sure, selling what you love "going to contest" is just as wrong, but Rodney simply has the founding to be at peace and free.
@Qualia Which is why he wants to make it true. He wants people to find peace in their ambitions. Do what you love, but don't expect instant greatness. That's all he told the kid. Go as high as you can, now, and understand that you have to go through some shit to do what you want to do and get higher, but be happy in that struggle knowing that you're progressing as a person. Not a lot of people can do that, but it helps when it comes from someone you respect, like this kid respects Rodney.
This pretty much shows how skateboarders should think, Rodney has the correct values and he does it because he loves it, that's the way it should be. He's such an artist, you can see it in his skateboarding and you can see it in his way of life.
ive been a fan of rodney ever since i started skating (4 years ago) ive read his book (how to skateboard and not kill yourself) about 3 times, ad i agree rodney is wise due to a lifetime experience. he is one of the most influental and greatest skaters ever also a great person that only wants good for others i admire rodney alot wish to meet him some day!
One of the most insightful people I have ever heard speak. And its refreshing to hear such insight and humility, come from one of the craziest, technically advanced skaters of Skate history. he should be a philosopher. he sounds like the son of JESUS when he talks, and everytime i hear him speak i want to go plant a tree or pick up trash. its intoxicating
@Joeloveswinterhatz92 yeah, he is just so humble and cool that it just makes you want to listen to him, its great that someone that passionate about something is so wise about life and yet so down to earth
You have to be compact to do those high-tech moves. Big moves is what counts. His uniqueness is the shine in our sk8 light. I just want to see him bust loose, like get angry, as I see some deeeeep anger bubbling there, but thankfully he puts it into the board. Peace, great video. (he does say some similar things at UCLA but he changes the night he asked his dad for his 1st board was new years, and not xmas..hehe. ) he's got some sage wisdom..obvious psychedelic influence.
he looks stoned no lie, the best skater of all time

I Thank Him For Everything He Has Done For Skateboarding

You have to be compact to do those high-tech moves. Big moves is what counts. His uniqueness is the shine in our sk8 light. I just want to see him bust loose, like get angry, as I see some deeeeep anger bubbling there, but thankfully he puts it into the board. Peace, great video. (he does say some similar things at UCLA but he changes the night he asked his dad for his 1st board was new years, and not xmas..hehe. ) he's got some sage wisdom..obvious psychedelic influence.
