  • Brando won for On The Waterfront.

  • ET was the only movie that deserved the oscar and didn't get it. Also, I think that Platoon was the worst movie that won the oscar of the movies that I''ve seen that have won.

  • Last of the Mohicans is my biggest gripe, total snub and easily better than all the films nominated. At the very least it should have had Best Cinematography and Best Director nominations.

  • I think forrest gump is a good movie, i do like it. But i do agree, its so so overated, its just simple idea, simple story thats. First time i saw it i was that was good, didnt even make me rethink my life at all. But i wasent bored, it was a good movie, with someone good moments with the stuff in vietnam and when hes running and some touching moments, but its just a simple movie, its not up there with the greats just overated, i think the acting in it is fine to. But, its not life changing.

  • Sweet Smell Of Success did not receive a single oscar nod.

  • dances with wolves is still a great film regardless of whether goodfellas is better and that idiot who said no country for old men had no competition...zodiac? there will be blood? the assassination of jesse james? before the devil knows you're dead? even if some of them werent nominated they were still better than no country¬

  • error guys. marty came out in 1955. on the waterfront came out in 1954.

  • "McCabe & Mrs. Miller" was the best film of 1971, not "The French Connection." And what the fuck, you don't know that Marlon Brando won best actor for "On the Waterfront"? And "The Cider House Rules" and "Traffic" flub? Goddamn, come on, rat, token black guy, douche, and fruit, get it together!

  • "The Fellowship of the Ring," as great as that was, it goes downhill after the Balrog...let's be honest, that was the climax of the movie and then we have elves, Boromir's inner conflict and getting shot, all which are a fucking snore. As for "GoodFellas" vs. "Pulp Fiction"? No contest: "GoodFellas" all the way.

  • @Hellzyead Oh yeah, Fellowship was so boring after the Balrog. Sorry there wasn't any 'splosions or donkey punches. I'm sure if you write Peter Jackson and mention this, he'll try and raise the bar. Now, Hellhead or whatever the fuck you're called, go back to the bus depot and suck some more dick for baseball card money. And stay JUST the way you are, princess :)

  • @MCFoltz What are you babbling about? No one cares to read your grotesque fantasies on youtube. Seek help, you are far too frustrated. No amount of your pathetic ranting will make TFOTR any less boring after the Balrog.(more than likely you're one of these cinefile tools...either the fruit that that loved TFOTR, the token black, the sniveling rat, or the whatever)

  • Are you guys going to do an episode on this year's oscars? I would like to hear about what your thoughts are on The King's Speech winning best picture.

  • good fellas was a very different type of ganster film compared to something like the god father like jeff said

  • no offense guys but i found pulp fiction boring and over the top but good fellas is a master piece and what jeff said about good fellas it was a very different film from Scorsese and for films in general as was pulp fiction so i do not agree with eric about pulp fiction being more the injustice not getting a oscar because it was more different for its time than good fellas, the good fellas was different

  • they're getting their years completely mixed up

  • What about movies that were not even nominated?????

I stand by my opinion that Malcolm X and Denzel Washington should have been nominated for Best Picture and Best Actor, respectively. But this is coming from someone who named her son Malcolm . . .

  • I really enjoy watching you guys´show

you all know a lot about movies and you got great chemistry together

Michael Foltz finally spoke out about Kubrick´s Dr Strangelove at 32:05 losing to my fair lady.

You could have spent more time talking about how Kubrick ("the greatest film maker that will ever exist" according to Steven Spielberg) never won an Oscar.

So, Why are Oscars so important?

  • You guys have ur dates screwed up....Cider House came out in '99 and lost to American Beauty, Ryan came out in '98 and lost to Shakespear in Love, Traffic did not win Best Picture, it came out in 2000 and lost to Gladiator. A very infruriating episode....

  • @DigitalAntiquarian

No, Cider House came out in '99 and lost to American Beauty....

  • And another thing.....Marlon Brando did win for On The Waterfront! Marty came out in '55 ..Waterfront came out in '54.....get ur facts straight!!!!!

    They both won best actor...

  • Hold the phone!!! You guys mentioned The French Connection and The Last Picture Show from '71 but what about A Clockwork Orange? It was one of only 3 of his films nominated for Best Picture (Dr. Strangelove and Barry Lyndon being the other 2) and possibly the most deserving of the 3 (then again Dr. Strangelove lost to My Fair Lady, wtf).

  • This is the first time I have ever commented on a video.

All I can say is THANK YOU!!!

I have never cared for Forrest Gump and have never really

    understood it's popularity.

  • but a beatifull mind was almost equally good .

btw : im not a hater i enjoy your vids but i find you to be a little too strict with judgment.

Sincerely a 15 year old cine freak from Greece !

  • everyone knew that martin scorsese would have more chances of winning an academy award (and he nearly did with the gangs of new york and a couple of years later he finally took it with the departed) kevin conster was like " now or never" thats why he got the oscar.

now A Beautifull Mind was a great film ,i dont think it deserved to get the award but it was a great film , i love the LOTR trilogy im a huge fan almost a geek (im a star wars geek thats why im almost lotr geek)

  • i dont like how cynical you guys can be .

i totally agree with pulp fiction over forrest gump (stupid movie ,lesson of the day : if you follow the system and the politicians even if you are a retard you will suceed !! )

but dances with wolves was an amazing achievement from kevin costner's part , he directed , he wrote the music he was the main character . it was an amazing movie.

  • Um guys I hate to break it to you but Brando DID win for On The Waterfront. Earnest borgnine won the following year.

  • Marlon Brando won in 1954. the guy who played Marty won in 1955.

  • I think The Shawshank Redemption should have beat Forrest Gump and Pulp Fiction.

As for a favorite best picture winner; Lawrence of Arabia.

  • What pisses me off is Mickey Rouke losing too Sean Penn. Oh kay Sean Penn won already for Mystic River. They should of gave it to Mickey. Cause "The Wrestler" was really good. Eddie Murphy getting snubbed by Allan Arkin.. When Eddie lost I was very pissed. Dream Girls was o.k...but Eddie Murphy was really good and showed a dark side of him.

  • Oscar snubs go back pretty far. for instance, did you know that Citizen Kane and The Maltese Falcon both lost to "How Green Was My Valley"? What a travesty that was...

Quick Question: I know there are a lot of different opinions on this, but what did you think about The deer hunter winning BP?

  • I love both Pulp Fiction and Forrest Gump, so I think they both deserved the oscar. I don't like people bad talking Gump "oh, it didn't deserve the oscar, pulp fiction was so much better bla bla bla." Fuck off! Who cares if it's a sentimental piece of shit, it's still a fuckin masterpiece! And so is Pulp Fiction. Am i getting through here? Cause i don't think so.

  • Crash did win best picture and script, but not director. Even knowledgable people like the members of Cinefiles can make momentary mistakes, when they're moving from year to year and genre to genre.

  • I wasn't rebutting; I was putting you in your place. So even trying to turn the tables, you fail. I didn't say it was WRONG of you to like Thin Red Line, I just said it was boring as hell. I dare say that has more weight than calling someone a mental midget. That must me a higher level of cinephilitude I have yet to attain. And now that I see it, it doesn't interest me. So carry on, mate. Enjoy yourself.

  • Your puerile rebuttal proves your point how exactly? A flower is beautiful too. Do you stare at one for two and a half hours as well?

Thin Red Line was boring as hell; sorry if that offends your sensibilities.

  • Whoo!! Forest Gump is my least favorite Oscar win as well!

  • And "boring". Don't forget "boring".

  • No new episodes?

  • are u guys coming back on youtube?

  • I do agree with you guys though in that there is so much B.S. that the Academy throws out. Pulp Fiction should have won.

  • Comment removed

  • hey guys, where r u???... jes'...

  • Good example. "The Sound of Music" beat out "Doctor Zhivago" in 1965. I didn't like "Driving Miss Daisy" as well.

  • In 1985, "Out of Africa" beat out "Prizzi's Honor, "The Color Purple" and "Kiss of the Spider Woman."

  • you guys don't know anything about film. Brando didn't win for On the Waterfront? Fargo didn't win best director. And "Jodie Foster's hillbilly woman" Uh Clarice was supposed to be southern and kind of white trash. It's her best performance.

  • A bunch of filmgeeks that yall don't know what you're talking about. Traffic was in 2000, Saving Private Ryan was beat by Shakespeare in Love in 98, and Ciderhouse Rules was in 99

  • Holy shit, Fargo did not win best director. You guys have no clue what you're talking about.

And I won't even mention the Traffic Saving Private Ryan mix up.

Someone should bring a laptop on while your doing these so you can get your facts straight.

  • Marlon Brando won the oscar for On The Waterfront you dummies

  • I know, WTF? He is a two time Oscar winnner. Ernest Borgnine won in a different year

  • What is Mikes' deal with the racial shit?

  • Silent Running, was an enviromental film at a time when it wasn't popular to talk about theses issues in the movies. George Lucas said it should have gotten the Oscar for Best picture, best actor and best director.

  • Too bad it was boring as hell.

  • I know you guys said you never take our suggestions for shows but hear me out:

    Best Shwarzenneger movies.

    Best Jimmy Cameron movies.

    Best Muscle movies.

See where I'm goin with this?

    Peace

  • i'd watch that.

best cameron film is the abyss, by far.

  • Ill sum up Forrest Gump: If you just do what youre told, youll do fine in the States...

Hated Braveheart even more, btw. But what about Driving Miss Daisy!?! That was the same year as Do the Right Thing, for crying out loud. DTRT wasnt even nominated.... I consider that Oscar MUCH more idiotic than the Goodfellas or Pulp Fiction snub. Look at the subject matter!

So my pick would be Driving Miss Daisy.

(Pulp Fiction at least won screenplay. And looking back: it wasnt all THAT good.)

  • I'm surprised that you guys don't aknowledge THE SAWSHANK REDEMPTION. I thought it was as good, if not better than PF.

That said, I love Forrest Gump. But either Pulp Fiction and TSR should have won.

And Goodfellas not winning is a bigger travesty, IMO.

And I was also doubfounded that Beautiful Mind, AND Chicago prevailed over the first two LOTR films.

And finally, Al Pacino never winning Oscar for playing Michael Corlone in ANY of the Godfather films, is one preposterous rip-off.

  • and although I think Rocky is a good film, it not only wrongly beat Network as you mentioned, but also Taxi Driver, which I find amazing. One more oscar error that stands out to me is Kramer vs Kramer beating Apocalypse Now, how did they figure that one out??

  • Bad oscar winner? Driving Miss Daisy. Crash was poor too as you all said. I agree with what you say about Pulp Fiction being a somewhat revolutionary genre film that missed out (although Shawshank Redemption should have beat Gump too), but I've always thought The Shining not even being nominated was a travesty as it took what was basically a B movie sub-genre and made something amazing - the same could also be said for Star Wars missing out to Annie Hall in '77 (though AH is terrific)

  • I'd love to see you guys do a show on Nic Roeg, Terry Gilliam or even David Lynch.

  • it's coming soon at least a terry gilliam one

  • Eric, I completely agree with your comment about Forrest Gump not deserving to win best picture but for a different reason. IMO the travesty there was that it beat The Shawshank Redemption, a film that has reached a level of greatness that I don't think Forrest Gump or Pulp Fiction will ever be able to obtain. Strange I tend to agree with your comments the most.

BTW could you guys send me the link to your review for Quantum of Solace?Curious to find out what you guys thought of it.

  • i agree with Edwin. No one really favors the Two Towers but I think it's the absolute emotional height of the trilogy and had absolute perfect performances throughout. Not to mention Andy Serkis as Smeagol. And the ending of this one is fantastic.

  • Keep the camera still, jesus!

  • No Country For Old Men goes a far way for me.

  • Loved the episode, gotta agree on Forrest Gump beating out Pulp Fiction as biggest travesty (And Quiz Show was nominated as was Four Weddings and a Funeral).

Also gotta say another big travesty by the Academy was Hitchcock never winning a Best Director award despite...I think it was Rebecca?...winning Best Picture.

  • I 100% agree with you, it is a great travesty Alfred Hitchcock never won for Best Director. He was one of the greatest directors EVER.

Great episode, loved the discussion. I agreed with some of your choices, esp Forrest Gump over Pulp Fiction, Dances with Wolves over Goodfellas. And esp Titantic over LA Confidential. LA is one of my all time favorites and it should have won.

Loved Edwin and Jeff mentioning the politics of the Oscars, that is very true.

Can't wait for the next ep!

  • Wow, now I blew it. I really thought it wasn't,

Them overlooking Ralph Fiennes's performance was the travesty I was thinking of.

  • Great topic. A lot of points I agree and disagree on. The big agreement is Forrest Gump, that film is just OK. What should have one that year was Shawshank Redemption, even over Pulp Fiction. ( 1994 had a lot of fuck ups, why was Quiz Show not nominated?)

I disagree about No Country for Old Men, its competition was amazing (There will be blood, Juno, Atonement, and my favorite, Michael Clayton)

BTW, It was Shakespeare in Love that beat out Private Ryan, but none of '98 nominees were great.

  • Yep. Yer right. Blew it on that call. But, Shakespeare in Love sucked. So who cares?
