It's not retarded - the fact that it's a stereotype is why they put it in there.

Most bats don't suck blood, a lot of 'em eat fruit, but the game is hardly as fun if you get bats munching on pears rather than coming at you with giant fangs.

The point is that games don't have to be realistic - a lot of people understand that wolves don't howl at the moon, but it might be funner that way in the game.
