  • i really like the ubuntu interface but the usability coming from osx is really dissapointing and difficult to use. There isnt even a click and drag option for moving stuff around, and if you use a new mac magic trackpad its not configured to work with it. I would use it if it was more interfaced for non technical people as well. It would be great if osx had more user options for the interface like ubuntu

  • they still have that ugly looking bar on left for 12.04 i wish they removed it.

  • Can you help please,

When i try to boot any i386 image, the virtual box gives me this warrning: This Kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU: Pae. Unable to boot. Please use kernell appropriate for your cpu.

I use intel e5200 processor which has pae support.

    Thx on any help.

  • I have it installed. Nighly build from 28/02/2012 it si superquick. I have 5.4.0 unity and GNOME 3.3.9 firefox 11.0 but I use Chrome anyway. Bootup I do not know just restarted once since then. Nothing has crashed. I could not set up application to be default for one file type, there is not command line for that. It is not adjustable at all. And upper bar is same mud like 11.10.

  • Whats your screen resolution?

  • @expIorations 1920x1080

  • @quidsup Please tell me if it is worth upgrading from 10.04 to 12.04. I haven't given the Unity interface a try yet but it looks nice.

  • @marcmg42 I think it will be worth upgrading to it, although its still an Alpha build its pretty damn stable and quick.

Its worth waiting a month or so after release before upgrading to let any last few bugs to be sorted out

  • so whats the difference??

  • The launcher in 12.04 is really very uncomfortable :(

  • I wish Ubuntu still came with out-of-the box option for Gnome Core, Unity just seems to take more time to complete tasks for me.

  • @Gdslayer7 youre right its too slow and it made me turn bact to ubuntu 10.10

  • Is there any chance of seeing the MATE Gnome 2 fork on Ubuntu 12.04?

  • hope this shit support AMD A8...

  • what about internal wifi cards? the 11 had lotta issues with that. thanks!

  • @sunnylee84 More drivers keep being added to the Kernel with every new release, dunno maybe you'll be in luck this time

  • I hate Ubuntu, Unity, and pretty much Gnome 3.2, but Linux Mint running Cinnamon and MATE KICKS ASS!

  • @quidsup.. were do you get your desktop backgrounds ?

  • At 4:13 - only one problem I see - Often when I want to close window, it shows the app. bar.

besides this I very like Unity.

  • Unity raped my Gran.

Im sticking with lucid. unity is so bad i just cant find the words... everything about it is worse than in gnome2/lucid.

  • @properboisthat -- I have switched to Xubuntu 11.10 on my laptop. It has the app bar at the bottom like a Mac and otherwise classic Gnome features. I don't see it much quicker than Ubuntu, other than it uses Abi Office and smaller apps instead of the standard full featured apps in Ubuntu. Best reliabity with any OS, don't install on release day, wait a month for bug fixes!

  • Old Ubuntu 10.10 is much better

    fuck caonical

  • I have defauld desktop gnome2 clasicc in 12.04 please

  • Any chance of them fixing all the issues they introduced with the previous release. Right now I'm thinking about moving back to windows because SAMBA hasn't been working properly.

  • I am even having trouble getting 11.10 working on Virtual Box with 3D acceleration (ie. the full unity interface is not working). I custom build machines for people and switching to Ubuntu would save customers the windows license but it isn't predictable enough to use yet. Most of my customers are perfectly happy not using windows.

  • @link48010

    same exact my problem :(

  • I would honestly start using Ubuntu on all my PC computers if it's hardware support was less hit or miss. Developers need to slow down on the interface and make it consistently work on vanilla PCs

  • @quidsup do you make a preview about ubuntu 12.04 alpha 2 who comes tomorrow?

  • looks the same as the previous one. guess its time for another 10 years of false updates.

  • @Avatarass Alpha 2 review will be up later today, that certainly isn't the same as the previous one

  • @quidsup how is that going to be different? they are going to remove something anyone else can remove manually? they are going to change the font in the textpad?

  • i just baght a 500 gb SSD

  • Bootup in under two secs :-D

I think time has come to buy an SSD ;-)

  • @liminos They're a great improvement. Im looking at upgrading my 60GB SATA2 SSD to a 240GB SATA3 SSD

  • @quidsup

how much is a Sata3 SSD drive?

in holland you pay 1 euro per GB. So it willl be 240 Euro For a SSD card

but i dont know how much a Sata 3 is in hollland have to look it up. But how much do you pay for it?

  • @DeadLikeSilence I'll go for a high end OCZ Vertex 3 which at £300 works out to just over £1 per GB

  • @quidsup

aha yes i see the same price as in holland.

i have to pay 300 euros than. But i don't buy it yet. To expansive for me ^^

  • @quidsup haha i will wait till official version came out but mostly same lol

  • @quidsup and one other thing can you make tut how to install tar.gz on ubuntu im blurred +_+ please help im noob

  • @bepopxxx I've already done one - "Complete Guide on Installing Software in Ubuntu"

  • @quidsup So the bootup time will be around 2 seconds? maybe by using a ssd? still thanks for the nice video!

  • ha a Microsoft commercial before a Linux video

  • Am I the only person that actually likes Unity?

Well, besides my grandmother, mother and pretty well all friends I have shown it to?

  • @foxyd3 I like it too.

Its more a case of those who dislike Unity are more vocal than those who like it.

  • shit unity. ubuntu 11.10 and 12.04 need to look like 10.04 lts

  • That 2 second boot is a big draw for me. I'm still on Linux Mint 9, so I think I'll upgrade this April. :D

  • thank god they got back to rythembox. banshee has given me nothing but problems for the past 2 years.

  • I like clemintine your views are skyrocketing have you looked into this ubuntu tv thing

  • @marcuspbaird I can't believe all the interest in this vid considering how poorly my Oneiric vids did in comparison. Seems that Ubuntu is still a very popular Distro.

I did try the Ubuntu TV, but haven't managed to get it working yet

  • yeah i know but can it run crysis

  • @Mr123whatevah Yes its rated Platinum in Wine so will run equal to or better than it can in Windows

  • @quidsup Not the DX11 version though!

    trolololo

  • Ubuntu will not boot in under 2 seconds.(lol)

The software center is supposed to start in under 2 seconds, not the OS.

  • Why can't I compile and run java source code in Ubuntu 12.04?

  • free+good= ubuntu

  • Ubuntu needs a good feature rich powerful DAW.

  • @Swidhelm thank you!! i agree

  • is there any word on 12.04 supporting Optimus technology?

  • tbh.... 10.04-10.10 was the best for me, but when Ubuntu brung the Unity interface to the users, all the compiz settings started messing up, the boot up took forever on 11.04 & Libre Office was all different for me:/ anyone agree?

  • @t3hlinuxp3nguin Totally agree. Unity sux, gnome 3 sux.. We wants the precious gnome 2.32 =)

  • @knurremurre YES! we want our old gnome back:)!

  • Can i Move unity Bar???

  • Does this one have better theme support? or just straight up better themes?

  • @PivotmasterXD257 Not sure yet its too early to tell

  • @quidsup Awww... 11.10 with Unity or GNOMME3 is a pain in the ass to get custom themes on. :/

  • @Victorg1997 did you chose desktop cube? the unity bars disappear when I chose it

  • @DaveTube24 It happened with a lot of effects .. The cube was one of them =/

  • Unity finally grew on me. I went from Gnome 2 to Gnome 3 and liked it at first but no compiz effects and hardly any customization :S also LAGGY on my hp. also takes up too much screen real estate on my 11 inch. Where as Unity looks beautiful on my 11 inch especially with the new Faenza (they are called something else I forgot though) icon pack :) Unity does take up more system resources though and compiz lags a bit. I can't wait for 12.04 though :) Ubuntu is becoming mainstream and I like it :)

  • I am running Ubuntu 10.10 at the moment, When I last used Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10 I was experiencing Display issues after the computer booted, I could still get to the grub menu, but I could only see the display when I went into "recovery mode" I believe. I have an Emachines E525 With a 16:9 HD Display Running Intel Celeron, 2GB RAM, If it is possibly driver issues, do you by any chance have some suggestions. Thank You for any support on the issue.

  • The desktop is getting much better... but it's the LTS Server that has got me all excited.

  • I prefer the new Gnome interface over Unity, but it looks like Unity is coming along nicely.

  • I still prefer the old Gnome 2.2 interface over anything else :/.

  • Ha, ubuntu in 2 seconds? I'll believe it when I'll see it.

Last time it was 10 seconds and mine still takes about 90 to boot.

  • How do you get that awesome side bar you always seems to have, am I missuing something really obvious?

  • @karrotsrkool Are you talking about the Unity Launcher? Thats been the default desktop since 11.04.

  • I really can't be too interested in any of this due for two reasons which never improve. 1: Libre Office or any Suite is a joke on Ubuntu or a Linux Distro. Yeah it's compatible, but barely. You make a Powerpoint Presentation, then attempt to open it in Impress, boom it's a complete mess. Plus Libre Office looks massively out dated. 2: The app quality is laughable. I like a few apps like Tee Worlds, but the majority are rubbish! And asking to pay £19.99 for a game you can't trial is stupid!

  • @windowspczone

Yes let's base the OS quality on applications, especially cross platform ones... /sarcasm.

Seriously you don't like Libreoffice well how about contribute hmm? It's all opensource. It is a FREE office suite, don't bitch if you don't wanna contribute. For most people like the casual user, or student user it works just fine.

  • @Victorg1997 AMD 3.3Ghz hex core CPU, Nvidia GTX 560ti,16Gb RAM, 60Gb SSD and a few HDDs

  • @quidsup With that kind of system, surely you must of thought about gaming? but then again you would need windows to run it

  • Comment removed

  • @Victorg1997 Compiz certainly is unstable in 11.10, but I found it to be ok once I got it all setup nicely.

I haven't suffered that particular error on my system. Its early on in the development cycle so that error may well exist, perhaps by the Alpha 3 Compiz will be a lot more stable?

  • 2 seconds boot.... yes maybe if you have a 2000$ machine ;)

  • Thanks for your video. One question, what software you use to screencast?

  • Thank you for posting this. I was curious if they were going to be able to improve the laggy software center in Ubuntu 11.10. I'm using 11.10 right now actually. I actually love this OS despite the fact that it can be a bit buggy. I am looking forward to upgrading. Hopefully there won't be any regressions in the next version. But it looks good so far, no? Looks a lot faster.

  • come on people, why are boot speeds so important? the longer you can go without restarting, the better..

  • @bamdadkhan because some people need there files, internet, programs fast and without issue....

  • @bamdadkhan I agree, I don't see why people are hyping all this up.. is it because of Chrome OS???

It takes about 30 secs for me to press the power button and be on the internet or have music open. People act like these 30 secs will kill them... Plus when I turn it on it gets reset maybe once a day from leaving to school and back home. I think the boot times are fine... I'd rather they focus on improving things like the speed in Unity, the UI, and other settings... not boot speeds...

  • Ubuntu is now a mix between GTK and Qt suck balls

  • Ubuntu sure has come a long ways since I first starting using it. Am glad it is sky rocketing and getting more and more recognized.

  • You forgot about a possible fully customizable Unity Dash!

  • @DARTHZANRUIT I didn't see anything about that when I was looking around for changes

  • @quidsup how exactly would u be able to customize the dash anyway?

  • @quidsup heres a link, it is still being worked on but looks somewhat cool :D omgubuntu.co.uk/2011/12/how-to-customise-unity-like-never-before/

  • @DARTHZANRUIT there not introducing that

  • The only reason that make me like Unity is, mmm..It support Compiz!! Great!

  • @quidsup You should definitely consider overclocking, that's what I did with my AMD FX 6100. I have the same video card, but in SLI. And a couple of SSD's. Cheers.

  • @iSaveAcorns Im not too worried about overcloking, although another SSD sounds tempting. A 256Gb SSD would do nicely for most of the day-to-day stuff in /home folder

    Cheers

  • Hey quidsup here it says that the 2 sec boot up was meant for the USC: webupd8.org/2011/11/expected-changes-in-ubuntu-1204-precise.html

  • Has this bug been fixed? /watch?v=OcI-OfPQ3aU

  • @xskydevilx No that bug is still there

  • @quidsup - Huh, it's odd that that's the only reason why I haven't switched to Oneiric yet :P

  • @xskydevilx I didn't even realise it was there until I saw that vid. It appears to only affect moving maximised full screen apps.

  • @quidsup - But it's still a bug. I was using the proprietary drivers, but I'm not sure if it's there right of the box.

  • Banshee vs Rythmbox? What do you think quids?

  • @Ograws Neither, my preference is Clementine

  • i hope they can let us choose to change the position of the ubuntu button or let use choose to make it look like the one in 11.04, because it hate the big dash button on the dash.

  • Great review Quids! Since this lts is good for 5 years will this mean that other distros such as the next mint based on 12.04 will also be supported for 5 years? I also noticed that you do a good job doing an unbiased review, but i was wondering why you choose ubuntu with unity.

  • @TBear0574 I expect they would also be supported for five years as long as they are still linked to the Ubuntu repos.

I quite like Unity with being able to search for apps instead of trawling through menus, and having simple icons to show which apps are open. Cheers

  • What is the new Compiz Expo effect? Did you actually show it? You mentioned it but I haven't found it in your video...

  • @biephi1 3:25 I should have slowed the effect down to make it clearer, but the difference is the selected desktop zooms away faster from the unselected desktops.

With the old effect they all zoom at the same rate

  • 0:52 nerdgasm

  • Hey quidsup great vid as usual but i was a little confused by the boot time being reduced to 2 sec!I hope i am wrong but didnt they say that they are actually going to reduce the boot time of USC to under 2 sec not the boot time of the OS

  • @ColdMascerader Im sure I read that it was the boot time, I'll have to try and find the article again. Cheers

  • Wow, 2 sec?

They must have found a way to auto-compile the kernel basted on your hardware.

    That would be amazing though:)

  • @blackoutworm Im thinking it will be more along the lines of a save state / hibernation for the kernel

  • Wow that would be unreal if they manage to get a system to boot in 2 secs,I know this is only the first Alpha but it seems as if unity is a little snappier on opening apps than in 11.10 when occasionally it can hang for a few secs.

  • @OmenX13 They never seemed to hang for me much in 11.10, but I've heard a lot of people saying it did

  • They should make Firefox be on the alpha channel since Ubuntu is on alpha 1. Firefox alpha 10 or 11 I think either way would be nice in a way to see that=].

  • looking forward to it coming out!.

    Cheers,

  • Great Job,may I ask what's your computer specs?

  • @iSaveAcorns AMD 3.3Ghz hex core CPU, 16Gb RAM, Nvidia GTX 560ti, 60Gb SSD, and a few standard HDDs. Cheers

  • Nice video as always :)

  • Quick question: What graphics card do you have for your computer? I noticed you have 8 gigs and a quad core, which is a pretty high end system.

  • @Icedrake99 Nvidia GTX 560ti along with 16Gb RAM and an AMD 3.3Ghz hex core CPU, so yeah a pretty hight end system

  • It's pretty stable for an alpha 1 release

  • I really want to try out this Alpha, but unfortunately, I seem to have misplaced the USB I use for testing OSes, and I'm also out of DVDs.

  • You cant minimize an app my clicking the icon in the dock, it pisses me off :()

  • Would you be able to put it on 1 CD and continue it on another CD?

  • amazing video as usual .

im not sure about the new version , besides i got some problems with 11.10 . it get freeze most of the time . and too slow . so i had to test another linux version , so i used opensuse 12.1 . its awesome till now for me.

but thanks mate for ur videos . without u i wouldnt use linux .

    cheers.

  • Hey Quid, love your videos. Just curious what distro are you using as your primary? Keep up the fantastic work!

  • 2 second boot GET IN!!

  • Out of topic: how do you do ubuntu upgrade? Fresh install or network update? I use mint-backup-tool ! Suggestions?

    Your reviews are fantastic !

  • @alessiodimiche Fresh installs are usually the best, as they have the least chance of having post-install errors. When you do upgrades, there is definitely a higher chance for things to break.

  • Am i in the podium to?

    Maybe third... :$

    Great video :)

  • @YmePt Sure Bronze medal for you. Cheers

  • saw the 2 second boot.

    me gusta.

  • @hheintze1 its booted in virtualbox, thats always faster when it has cached it

  • @GordonFrohman20 lol even beat me to watching it
