i really like the ubuntu interface but the usability coming from osx is really dissapointing and difficult to use. There isnt even a click and drag option for moving stuff around, and if you use a new mac magic trackpad its not configured to work with it. I would use it if it was more interfaced for non technical people as well. It would be great if osx had more user options for the interface like ubuntu
When i try to boot any i386 image, the virtual box gives me this warrning: This Kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU: Pae. Unable to boot. Please use kernell appropriate for your cpu.
I use intel e5200 processor which has pae support.
I have it installed. Nighly build from 28/02/2012 it si superquick. I have 5.4.0 unity and GNOME 3.3.9 firefox 11.0 but I use Chrome anyway. Bootup I do not know just restarted once since then. Nothing has crashed. I could not set up application to be default for one file type, there is not command line for that. It is not adjustable at all. And upper bar is same mud like 11.10.
@properboisthat -- I have switched to Xubuntu 11.10 on my laptop. It has the app bar at the bottom like a Mac and otherwise classic Gnome features. I don't see it much quicker than Ubuntu, other than it uses Abi Office and smaller apps instead of the standard full featured apps in Ubuntu. Best reliabity with any OS, don't install on release day, wait a month for bug fixes!
Any chance of them fixing all the issues they introduced with the previous release. Right now I'm thinking about moving back to windows because SAMBA hasn't been working properly.
I am even having trouble getting 11.10 working on Virtual Box with 3D acceleration (ie. the full unity interface is not working). I custom build machines for people and switching to Ubuntu would save customers the windows license but it isn't predictable enough to use yet. Most of my customers are perfectly happy not using windows.
I would honestly start using Ubuntu on all my PC computers if it's hardware support was less hit or miss. Developers need to slow down on the interface and make it consistently work on vanilla PCs
@quidsup how is that going to be different? they are going to remove something anyone else can remove manually? they are going to change the font in the textpad?
@marcuspbaird I can't believe all the interest in this vid considering how poorly my Oneiric vids did in comparison. Seems that Ubuntu is still a very popular Distro.
I did try the Ubuntu TV, but haven't managed to get it working yet
tbh.... 10.04-10.10 was the best for me, but when Ubuntu brung the Unity interface to the users, all the compiz settings started messing up, the boot up took forever on 11.04 & Libre Office was all different for me:/ anyone agree?
Unity finally grew on me. I went from Gnome 2 to Gnome 3 and liked it at first but no compiz effects and hardly any customization :S also LAGGY on my hp. also takes up too much screen real estate on my 11 inch. Where as Unity looks beautiful on my 11 inch especially with the new Faenza (they are called something else I forgot though) icon pack :) Unity does take up more system resources though and compiz lags a bit. I can't wait for 12.04 though :) Ubuntu is becoming mainstream and I like it :)
I am running Ubuntu 10.10 at the moment, When I last used Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.10 I was experiencing Display issues after the computer booted, I could still get to the grub menu, but I could only see the display when I went into "recovery mode" I believe. I have an Emachines E525 With a 16:9 HD Display Running Intel Celeron, 2GB RAM, If it is possibly driver issues, do you by any chance have some suggestions. Thank You for any support on the issue.
I really can't be too interested in any of this due for two reasons which never improve. 1: Libre Office or any Suite is a joke on Ubuntu or a Linux Distro. Yeah it's compatible, but barely. @Victorg1997 Compiz certainly is unstable in 11.10, but I found it to be ok once I got it all setup nicely.
I haven't suffered that particular error on my system. Its early on in the development cycle so that error may well exist, perhaps by the Alpha 3 Compiz will be a lot more stable?
Thank you for posting this. I was curious if they were going to be able to improve the laggy software center in Ubuntu 11.10. I'm using 11.10 right now actually. I actually love this OS despite the fact that it can be a bit buggy. I am looking forward to upgrading. Hopefully there won't be any regressions in the next version. But it looks good so far, no? Looks a lot faster.
@bamdadkhan I agree, I don't see why people are hyping all this up.. is it because of Chrome OS???
It takes about 30 secs for me to press the power button and be on the internet or have music open. People act like these 30 secs will kill them... Plus when I turn it on it gets reset maybe once a day from leaving to school and back home. I think the boot times are fine... I'd rather they focus on improving things like the speed in Unity, the UI, and other settings... not boot speeds...
@quidsup You should definitely consider overclocking, that's what I did with my AMD FX 6100. I have the same video card, but in SLI. And a couple of SSD's. Cheers.
@iSaveAcorns Im not too worried about overcloking, although another SSD sounds tempting. A 256Gb SSD would do nicely for most of the day-to-day stuff in /home folder
