  • "we don't want to try and pull ourselves we want to pop ourselves" - trainer explaining pullups

  • Jason, thank you so much for sharing this. Enjoyed how you broke it down into segments. Also, congrats on doing so well in the 2011 CF Games!

  • Good lesson

  • people need to stop hating on kipping pull ups. both kipping and dead hanging have their place. personally i dont use kipping pull ups in conditioning workouts, i just feel better about myself if i stick with it and grind out dead hangs. I just choose not too kip, thats not to say i think nobody should ever kip. its dealers choice. i do use a lot of these kipping warm up and progression movements as part of my dynamic warm ups though, i find them beneficial for Oly lifts and OVH squats.

  • @ crossfitsc do you purely do crossfit? It's just your carrying a little more muscle than what most can achieve purely from crossfit? Cross fitters generally seem leaner. Just interested as I'm making the switch from body building

  • Very helpful, thank you.

  • How come whenever there's a video with a kipping pull-up in it, some ignorant yo-yo calls it a cheater pull-up? For consistency, these people should also post comments on videos of push jerks or push presses, "he's cheating because he's using his legs!" They are different movements, people. Get some education.

Good progression, by the way, Jason. I liked the touch the belly/back part.

  • This is just a cheating bad formed pull-up.

    Get on my level

  • Jason, do you even lift?

  • @stoner4010 Did you just ask Jason Khalipa if he lifts?

  • I really liked this video. I'm new to crossfit and this is my goat. I loved the progression with you having Ashley, touch your toes, then swing and touch your hands with her belly and back. That helps to know how to move your body. I will be trying this next time.

  • It seems like cheating to do a pull up. Using momentum instead of your latts.

  • @hooksashands

apparently it's also really bad for your shoulders

so in the end I don't really understand why people will cheat to do this

  • @hooksashands You're right. It is more of a full body movement and requires you to keep your midline straight, which takes a lot more mouscles besides your lats. So basically, you are sacrificing more lat workout in order to burn more calories/get more muscles involved. Dead hang pullups are a better strength exercise.

  • Thank you for posting this. Great break down.

  • That there are people who resort to typing capital letters (ooh, so tough... like nobody can do that) & profanity to discredit the use of an exercise demonstrates their ignorance of exercise science, insecurity within themselves, & intellectual limit to process thoughts. Anyone can criticize from the anonymous comfort behind a computer; only so many people can actually do some of the stuff we see here; even fewer have the guts to put it out on video.

Grow a spine & brain or don't watch it.

  • great video screw the haters.

  • good video very helpful thanks for taking the time to show the proper form kipping

  • KIPPING =ITS JUST WEAK ASS BIT##CHES THINKING THEIR DOING SOMETHING WITHOUT PUTTING IN ANY HARD WORK.

WATCH "STRONG GIRL DOES PULL UPS"

  • @tomsilver Obviously someone that hasnt put in hard work. If you understood a lick about crossfit, youd know why kipping pullups are absolutely necessary. hit the gym, sucka.

  • @tomsilver When did this new age of crossfitters come in? Get back to bodybuilding you idiot, we don't need clowns ruining our gyms.

  • @ChripinTroll The average crossfit would demolish you in just about any athletic discipline. Go back to your biceps curls

  • @tywonellington ROFL, I've been crossfitting for 3 years now. Obviously you can't read.. I said when did this new age of "crossfitters" come in, who do bodybuilding motions... And I told him to go back to bodybuilding.. Idiot, learn how to read before you embarrass us CrossFitters any more.

  • @tomsilver You are a joke...

  • Great break down! The best break down of this on youtube! Cant wait to watch all your videos! Great work on this one!

Also to any newbies I also recommend that u avoid this as this is only for advanced strength individuals as its dangerous to those with untrained ligaments. Best thing for new pull up exercisers is one foot on a chair assisted pull ups or friend holding ur feet from behind u human-assisted pull ups. But this is a great technique to know for the future & to know what to avoid.

  • @Jammin4uo I can't agree with this more. I personally played soccer for 17 years but never really did a lot of pullups or upper body training outside of the sport. So now I'm doing CrossFit and I decided to learn how to do Kipping Pullups. Well...I can do them now...unfortunately given my weight and the fact that I never really developed my shoulders doing regular pull ups, my right shoulder started to hurt. Luckily I took a couple weeks off and it got better. So be careful.

  • Hey there I've been a personal trainer for 3years now and always into sports/fitness. Just recently I've started doing crossfit. I've Been watching you tube to get pointers on doing a kipping pullup. THanks to your video I did my first one today!!!! Yaaaaaay!! I can do 2in a row the have to restart. I've just got to get the pushing back off the bar down. I just wanted to thank you for the awesome instruction!!!

  • @bellasmama1 From one personal trainer to another, you would be wise to avoid these at all cost and learn a traditional pull-up. These often cause SLAP tears in the shoulder. Just Google kipping pull ups and shoulder injuries. Just imagine the "peel-back" force in the shoulders when they are forcefully wrenched back at the apex/reversal point of the kip. I would never recommend learning kipping before you at least have 3+ deadhang pullups. Women are more prone to this injury due to strength.

  • @oasiswoodlands Good to know.

  • Great Demo! Having her lay on the floor showed me more then any other video.. gives me someplace to start!

    Thanks

  • Awesome tips. Still working on pushing off the bar after I do 1. But its a work in progress. Thanks for the great info.

  • thats the first time i've seen it broken down like that, very good video thanks very much

  • @jacks0003

I favorited this one because it covers the ground example. But check this one out too...

    watch?v=7spRknkD1hU

  • this is really awesome!

  • wow i wonder if someone has ever accidently smash there face right into the bar when doing kipping.

  • Amazing explanation and progression, thanks so much for putting this up!

  • great video ,nice tips

  • Great tips! Thanks for posting!

  • What genius missed the "Like" button?

  • I don't know why I still can't do this. I can do 10 clear dead hands but not one with kipping. Weird. I will master this.

Thanx for the tip bro. Excellent!

  • dude, this is the best explanation i've ever seen. you're a good teacher

  • Ok, this has got to be the simplest explanation ever! I feel like I can definitely learn this!

  • Great trainer MrK!

  • Best demo I've seen thus far. I will try to apply it the next time I attempt it. I'm still learning.
