Theres 2 timing chain guides that just needs to be removed. The two guides don't put any pressure on the chains and they're made of plastic which give it that ticking sound. Over time, the chain wears down the plastic and makes it lose causing the tick. You can either take the two out completely or replace them(fyi, replacing them will only bring the problem back again later). Nissan has already stated the timing chain guides are unnecessary and can be removed.
you allready got this fix ? cause my 240 is doin the same shit and they chargin me 400 to replace the timin chain but ppl keep telin me is the tensioner that needs to be replace help lol
i am a Nissan tech , on Nissans data base they say for the ka24de (Altima, 240sx, p/u hardbody,) to remove the top chain guide. be deleting this peace it should take care of the noise, remove the valve cover and take off the guide above the chain it will be two 10mm bolts and discard the bolts and guide.
do this first and drive on it for awhile and if noise is still there take necessary additional action
hey did you fix this? mines doing the exact same thing. I've read to take the chain guides out to stop the noise, but what about the slack? is it going to be an issue?
@Crazyrogue Timing chain guides perform a certain function. I've heard of people taking guides out with no negative effects. However, I would much rather replace a bad timing chain tensioner with a new one than take it out completely.
@Crazyrogue thats why u leave the timing chain tenshioner what happens is the ka are notourious for this but the tsb was to take out the top and side chain guides
Have you checked the timing chain guide directly under the valve cover? I have one i am building now that the guide was broke off and just riding on top of the chain.
@tebattles i have one that i found the remains in the oil pan i may have to start looking into it cause there is noise when i accelerate a little all the rods and pistons are good but haven't looked at the upper part yet.
The Oil you use should be thin enough to be quickly pumped around the engine and start lubricating during cold start ups (this varies with your local weather/temperature), and it should have enough properties to lubricate the engine under operating temperature, while providing adequate oil pressure.
i had this problem on a 2003 mercedes e class, let it go for a couple of days then bang.. car wouldnt start. its in the garage now and it looks like the chain stretched hopped the teeth and messed up the timing of the valves. serious money involved never ever ignore a noise..... donations welcome :)
this is a common issue with these motors and don't worry the chain isnt going to break...that is veryyyyy rare! pull the valve cover off and remove the upper chain guide...the one between the 2 cam gears. see if that helps. you can also try using some thicker oil aswell and maybe change the tensioner. these are easy fixes if the noise is still there...then the chain is probably stretched and worn and the other guides are worn.
I have an 94 Altima KA24DE with 203,000 miles. My timing chain rattle is nowhere near that bad, its more inconsistent and random.
I decided to take the upper timing chain guide off while I replaced the valve cover gasket. Put everything back together and the noise was louder. It almost sounded like the chain was actually hitting the valve cover. So I put the guide back on and its back to what it was before.
I'm thinking tensioner?? What all do I have to disassemble to get to that?
Side note, everything looked immaculate under the valve cover. No buildup what-so-ever, the timing chain was super tight (about 3-4 mm of play) and the wear marks on the guide weren't TOO bad (just looked "cleaner" than the rest of it)
sound like its just the two upper guides easy do it your self remove the valve cover; two bolt removes each guide; illiminate the guides place valve cover back on and rattle is gone.... if not you got another problem
soooo quick question guys i also have this problem on my 92 coupe k24de and when you start the car it rattles like crazy and kinda howls and then goes away when you start drviing. do i just remove the plastic guides and put the cover back on or is there more to this?
U have to change the timing chain as a whole. the lower timing chain guide is plasic and if it breaks say goodbye to your intake valves. I neglected that sound and ended up costing 400 more bucks replacing the heads. Fix before U bend your intake valves. Its an interference engine and if u keep cranking after it breaks the chain will shave the stoppers on lower timing cover.
I have a 93' hatchback. Mine is doing the same thing. The problem is that it has a steel timing chain instead of a rubber timing belt. Over time, the chain files down the parts inside and making the chain have less tension, not to mention getting shavings into the oil. This will be a big problem. Get the Timing chain and your oil replaced soon.
Cause I just changed my oil to 10w30, i have no idea what oil i was running before cause I just got the car. any info would be greatly appreciated. thanks.
Your upper timing chain guard is either loose or broken. Nissan had a recall after the car was introduced about the guard . Its useless. Causses more harm than good. Take the Valve Cover off and it right there in the front.
It is held on by two 10mm bolts if it is still attached at all. Remove the bolt and guard and PUT THE BOLT BACK IN THE HOLES. and your done.
@democorleone i just bought a 95 240sx with 95k miles bone stock it was an older ladies car and babied... have had it for 6 days driven it 550 miles have not pushed it atall(havent seen4grand yet)has been making that exact noise for the past 100-150 miles(had to get home no aaa) have a warranty but would rather fix myself can you please tell me exactly whats going on and what you did to repair,
the guard that protects the chain from hittin the engine top is broke, thats all...jus get it removed and BAMM!!! no more noise. i had the same problem.

is my timing chain going bad, or is it the tensioner, because my rattles at startup, but right after is very smooth

Sounds a bit like what my car is doing (video on profile), All you did to fix it was change the oil type?

@Sunshyne276 I suggest you have an experienced mechanic diagnose the problem for the ECOTEC engine immediately.

@ChubbaFluff
To answer your question. Compared to 5w30, 10w40 will theoretically allow for harsher cold start up conditions.
democorleone 1 year ago
@ChubbaFluff

democorleone 1 year ago
this motor calls for 5w30 because of the very small oil holes in components of engine, 1040 will shorten engine life prematurely

Better check that timing chain. If that thing breaks, you're in for an expensive repair. You don't ever want that to happen. :)

Thats thick for that engine. There are some tight oil passages in that engine. Guides/chain do sound worn from the video.
