@glenzboyz Two or three days after the wind shifted. Growing up in the pine barrens I thought it was a fire. I went out expecting the smell of leaves and brush. Instead it smelled like burnt clutch, brakes pads, stone, plastic and a lot more. The ash set off alarms 35 to 45 miles away. I'll never forget that smell.
Since then I have often wondered how the brave people of London and other cities during WW2 felt?
I'm an Englishman who currently lives in Scotland and I love the sound of bagpipes, I think Scotland's a great country and I only wish that sometimes the English would give the Scots and their traditions the respect they deserve..
@petbedding01 its very nice to hear that and i agree vice/versa with the english and their traditions, its the auld saying "why cant we just get along"
I'm black and South african I realy don't know how this music can get into my heart so badly, even in the movies I lways like this kind of music (Brave heart). I realy lyk this kind of music.
The Dark Isle is the Black Isle, that is North of Inverness. Its no reaaly an island, its a narrow bit of land between the Beauly Firth and the Cromarty Firth.
@malcolmcog Sorry my friend , The dark island is Benbecula,South Uist Outer Hebrides that tune has been played there for hundreds of years and one of my islanders by the name of Ian MacLaughlan wrote the words, But you are right about the Black isle but it is called the Black isle not the Dark island , Thats my Island
I don't know if this is the same band, but I remember seeing The Black Watch in concert a long time ago. It was absolutely incredible because there were so many of them on the stadium floor all working in unison like I huge Anglo marching band. Would love to see it again.
There are also some lovely words to this tune. To me the best sung version is by a great Scottish singer called Calum Kennedy. He has a lovely voice. Have a look for it.
Cape Breton Island must of been a part of Scotland that broke away during the great ice age. Everytime I hear a beautiful scottish tune like this one, I get homesick for both places and I've never been to Scotland yet.
I landed on the Isle of Iona back in June 08 and I don't know wether it was just the scenery or the long jouney to get ther or the weight of my back pack but the tears just rolled freely down my face! I tear up now thinking of it. The Birtplace of Christianity in these Isles! :'D
I had a piper march my mum's coffin into the cremotorium to this from the gates to the door not a dry eye to be had & i knew then she was with my Dad loving every minute makes you proud to be a scot that we have such wonderful music that bridges the world. to everybody who has lost someone god bless
had this at my dads funeral 4 weeks ago along with highland cathedral. my dad loved his holidays up north we live in fife he went north rather than south he loved Drumnadrochit, 2 very emotional powerful songs. rest in peace dad i love and miss you so much you were my hero in life xxx
@cod120 So very sorry to hear of your dear Dad's passing. I live in Toronto, Canada originally from Inverness...we had a fabulous lone piper play this at my Dad's funeral. Brings tears every time I hear it. Blessings to you and peace to your Dad
@glenzboyz My family originally came from Skye Iona and Mull Glen before immigrating to Australia early 1840s as Free Settlers in New South Wales. The family link still exsists as even today we still have cousins living in Scotland
Awesome just awesome!!! I want to visit Scotland so much!!!! I have heard many renditions of The Dark Isle, but this one is by far the best... So moving and touching... <3 Well done!!!
My dad said to me when i was 6 he wanted this played at his funeral, i'm lucky to still have him with me, i'm 16 now, but every time i listen to this i cry because i know one day he won't be here, i try my best appreciate the time i have with him, so that when he passes away i wont have regrets, i want to be able to smile and say i made the most of the time we had.
@wullie1wullie I'm so sorry that your grandson passed, how terribly sad. Beautiful piece that you chose. Had it played at my Dad's funeral as well. Brings tears but so Scottish and perfect!
This song gives me goosebumps! Been listening to it over and over. I can proudly say I am descended from the McAlpin clan and the Comyn (Cumming) clans although I have many other bloodlines, English, Welsh, Irish and Breton, I treasure my Scottish ancestors eveyday. Thank you for posting this and Kia ora from New Zealand
Must admit I'm a bit jealous of you folks that live in such a magnificent place...not to mention the bagpipes. Brings tears to my eyes every time I hear them played.
I've heard the tale of a Scot who came to New York looking for his sister, and to let her know he was there, he played her favorite song up and down the street. This supposedly happened in the late 1800's and according to legend he did it in full highland dress, complete with sword and mercy dagger. Now I don't know, but if It happened did he find her?
@glenzboyz If you ever get the chance to visit Cape Breton you would feel right at home. It's almost like Scotland but on a way smaller scale. My hometown is Inverness.
I have never been to Scotland in my life but would love to visit one day.
As a young man my father was involved in a serious accident in Scotland and spent several months in hospital recovering. He has never forgotten how caring and friendly the Scots were and he is now 81 years old. Scotland will always have a special place in this family's heart.
I am scottish and Irish I live in South Africa where our Gordon (from the scotts side) came to stop from being beheaded and he then changed his name to Duguid. I was raised by the duguids and my fathers side never knew me though unfortunately I bare their last name ( Uys) I found all this out when I was 17 no body had ever told me ( I guess I should've figured) :0) I have been proud of it since those words came out. :0) I've always had a love for Scotts, scottish music and well - Everything

Man what i would give to have heritage like this. This counrty is so beautiful, it makes me feel proud to be 15% scottish (as you can tell im an American) God bless scotland
This piece of music brings back so many memories from my childhood. It was one of my mother's favourite pieces - I can remeber her humming this and the highland cradle song. Many thanks.
@tongs1982 My Dad was with the 51st Highland Division, was captured at St Valerie also and marched to Poland, he finally escaped from on his 3rd try and made his was to Odessa on the Black Sea. Happy New Year
My grandfather & Great grandfather were bothing serving in the black watch in St. Valery and were captured by the germans. They were marched from france to poland where they became P.O.W. Whilst in poland between them the wrote over 100 bagpipe songs. And upon there release were made bagpipe majors. Although none of the song's that they wrote are one's that are heard of now there is a bit about them at the black watch HQ in Perth
Music to touch the soul!! Thanks for sharing :) Stood on the Battlefield of Culloden last week....could almost hear the pipes in the distance on the wind.
@cedar31 How to make an old soldier cry, close your eyes and listen, heres to all the british army past and present we are the best. and i will meet you all in the mess in heavens barracks long live the sappers
Thanks for responding glenzboys. I read this somewhere. Actually, there wasn't a chanter, as we know it, attached at the time. I often wonder if people from India and Pakistan came up with that idea. Again, certainly us scots are the race most associated with this instrument.
Forgive me if I'm wrong...was it the greeks who inaugurated the bagpipes. Us Scots use this instrument to a heavenly conclusion. I heard Greek shepherds use/d a crude form to round up sheep. No offence to the people of Greece. On the contrary, many people will sincerely thank them, if true.
What a beautiful country.

This piece of music brings back so many memories from my childhood. It was one of my mother's favourite pieces - I can remeber her humming this and the highland cradle song. Many thanks.

@poetLORRYate I did read the Egyptians and Romans had used a form of pipes.
Bagpipes existed in many forms around the world.
I'm not an expert im afraid.
