What if you took the old plate, and laid it over the new steel you're going to fabricate, and used spray paint to show all the holes and the exact outline?

lol dramatic brother! I guess that scrap metal worked out pretty good for you! I never would have thought of using cardboard and other things first before transferring the holes over, I would have just prayed and hope the metal lined up haha.
