@kregaan i was in a psych hospital once and was talking to a Pysch in my room and i told him Mike was God, (He started making lots of notes,I quickly added" the God Of Music"" he replied, " Im very very glad you told me that" LOL Trouble is people these days dont recognize living real legends (-:
mikey has a big catalogue and really good works, but frankly today's works are very very out gas, he has'nt got the inspiration of the 80's and much less the 70's, i think he need to leave the sinthesizers and back to the multi instrumentation again, like in tubular bells and the great amarok besides he could repeat himself with tubular bells 5 6 7 or eight!....
Thumbs up if you first heard of Mike Oldfield from reading Richard Branson's book " Loosing My Virginity" !! or were born after 1989 and appreciate him with all your heart!
@IIgniteTheRevolution I was born 89 and he's my favourite musician - but I got to know about him from my dad who's got a lot of old LPs that I listened through - Tubulas Bells was one of them.
True master piece ,Mike Oldfield is a genius as a composer and artist he is some one that helped me get through my teenage years. The album tubeular Bells Trandsends time and space.
I have this on a twin DVD, combining Tubular Bells 2 from Scotland and Tubular Bells 3 (from Horse Guards Parade in London). Both concerts were brilliant, and worth watching. By the way it is Edinburgh, not as per the spelling here.
The concert was many years ago... I remember watching it on the tele... must be about 20 years ago now.... brilliant... Them bells just have your hairs standing up on the back of your neck......
Musical genious, let's see... I would define it as one who can stimulate various senses, not just earing. For example in the chorus section i can imagine an african savana with the sunset and lions strawling by, and it's really something...
One can not express great ideas in music by meaninglessly repeating only a few notes just as great plays can not be produced by repeating 3 or 4 words however different the voices and intonations may be. People who appreciate this kind of "music" have never learned to listen to truly great music. As a result their ear and their part of brain that appreciates music is as developed as the muscles of a baby. They have yet to go from milk to solid food.
Is the announcer John Gordon Sinclair of Gregory's Girl fame? He seems a wee bit glib for the job and lacks the drama and gravitas of the bloke in the original album. What a great vid though - thanks for posting
@Canaderek From Wikipedia: The instruments introduced, in order are; grand piano, pipe organ, glockenspiel, bass guitar, vocal cords, "two slightly sampled electric guitars", "the Venetian effect", "digital sound processor" and tubular bells. "The Venetian Effect" refers to a characteristic mandolin technique, a type of tremolo known as bisbigliando, in which the effect of sustained notes is achieved by repetition.

The "Venice" synth effect is #58 on the Korg M1 (used by Oldfield). Maybe it was made with sampled mandolins?
A beautiful, if not note for note, rendition of his original album. I know because I practically wore out the grooves playing it over so much! A true shame this music, and similar from that time period, never seems to get the air play it deserves! There's a lot of great new music around today, but I'm still grateful to have grown up through "Old School"! ,,,,,Cheers!

I've been into Mike Oldfield for years - Tubular Bells 1 got me hooked. However, having recently explored some of the live video footage of him, it becomes clear that he stands out from the crowd as someone that not only enjoys what he does, but also that he looses himself in the music. Add that to the fact that he seems to surround himself with musicians that very much play "for the sake of it" and not "because it's a job" and I find my respect for the man goes to a whole new level!

@Canaveral305 I remember a song he released 20 years or so again called 'Pictures in the Dark'...never made it into the charts - but was a really good song - he sang it very well.
@wtc175 I don't think Mike sang on Pictures In The Dark, he think he just mimed another singer's performance for the video... but he did sing on Heaven's Open - and was pretty good - and some other songs (like in Tubular Bells or Ommadawn). But i've never seen him do it in a live performance, which is why I'm asking...
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
I remember in 1992 when the Edinburgh Concert was Simocast (spelling?) I was in Collingwood Ontario watching the program with my dear parents and a friend. That night was magical, we felt the same electrifying pulse that held those attending spellbound. Tubular Bells is a synergy of perfection. Love it, and that night. And the fireworks at the conclusion capped off a beautiful evening. Mary R

Wow! Saw this concert a short time after this live session. It made such an impression that I bought the CD the day after. It has stayed with me during all these years... This video of "The Bell" is just magnificent and it still gives me the shivers, 18 years later!
Mike Oldfield is a GOD i can never get enough of his music. I am a Mike Oldfield fanatic. I listen to the same songs everyday it's getting quite obsessive. lshmtfimc
I listen to a wide variety of music, yet choosy about the style. And even after repeatedly hearing those favorites, I have to part away, to hear another artist. But for Mike's music, I can never get enough....and listened to the same ones today that were produced from him in the 70s.
Musical perfection. Check out the musicians' faces; all truly enjoying what they're doing. One of those moments when it "all comes together" and total bliss is achieved. KARES06, thanks for posting...
Musical perfection said you! And you are able to give that verdict because? Oh, because you are musically challenged! Yes I see. Wise quote: "Masturbating all your life will never let you know how it feels to hold a woman in your arms!" This here is in fact musical masturbation. Wake up!
Sorry, I would like to inform your dim perception that, first, I am not your friend. and second it is being confirmed by your immediately resorting to vulgar vocabulary that you are also extremely limited in all other parts of your brain. Much like a gorilla who has not enough intelligence to defend its position and is only able to get angry. Case rested! Fans of this music are people of similar capacity as yours. Brain dead would be someone who doesn't display much thinking.
@forbeliculus What does jmp5255's opinion have to do with the music, or Mike Oldfield? Like I said before, if you can write something better and prove that it does not take high brain capacity to do so, I'll change my mind and support you. Until then, us Mike Oldfield fans will continue to listen to Tubular Bells I, II, and III, believing, as we do, that he is a musical genius. Good day to you sir (or madame, or whatever you are).
I know you don't know what i'm talking about. A musical genius compared to who? Who do you know? I like to inform your dim perception that not being able to express valid arguments and immediately resorting to vulgarity, which is what you do, is the mark of a creature of weak intelligence. Which is why you like and defend this "music". This "music" that does nothing to feed your brain man! wake up!
@forbeliculus If it's so bad, then I have a few questions:
1. Why do you keep coming back to watch this video?
2. What do you have against this music? If you listen to the original Tubular Bells and this one, you would notice that what Mike Oldfield has done is not much different from what musical geniuses like Bach, Beethoven, and Mozart once did.
3. Why don't you try to write something like it. After all, it does not take high brain capacity, as you said before.
This might very well be the greatest live performance ever in the history of non-conducted music. The little smile on Mike's lips at the very end of this piece says all. He was at the time a perfectionist, not content with a live performance if it did not sound exactly like his recording. This one comes very close, if not better. Luckily he has abandoned those thoughts now and try instead to make the concerts unique experiences. This performance never gets old, and the same goes for Mike :)
Heavenly - if there is a Heaven this is what I want to hear.

The thing I love about Mike Oldfield is the feel he has for all peoples of The British Isles and Ireland. Ommadawn is an example of this.

@Vinterfrid It's a tone setting on keyboard synthesizers: "Venice" (a soft, high-pitched whistle). Mandolin also appears in the song.

Musical perfection said you! And you are able to give that verdict because? Oh, because you are musically challenged! Yes I see. Wise quote: "Masturbating all your life will never let you know how it feels to hold a woman in your arms!" This here is in fact musical masturbation. Wake up!

@jmp5255

@jmp5255
