  • As a (former) violist, I first was skeptical, especially what little I had heard about the bass oboe made it, at best, an "ugly stepchild". BOY, WAS I WRONG!, I played this piece many times (even trying it out for two violas to thumb my nose at the violinists), and it is, of course, magnificient. I had no idea that the bass oboe was so agile, and the bass oboist does justice to this great piece. Damn, I wish I had played the bass oboe! :) The best to both of these soloists!

  • I too would have been skeptical of the transcription. But it really does work well!! I like the oboe here, but the bass oboe is what really makes the piece for me. The bass oboist is the former principal oboist of the Chicago Symphony.
