If you are about to use some serious glass on 4/3'', Olympus would be better because it has built in stabilization and higher res EVF … cause you'll end up manually focusing anyway.
However for street photography I'd say the best is Ricoh GXR with 28mm A12 or 50mm A12… completely silent shutter, same size and better image quality then any of the 4/3'' cameras for a similar price.
forgot to mention that the panasonic has a handy built in pop up flash. For serious photographers you would obviously want some kind of external flash, but then again, in that case you would probably not be using a compact slr such as these.
Thanks. Great comparison. I'm actually leaning towards the new Sony Nex 3 with 16mm lens. If Olympus offered a wide angle pancake as a kit lens it would be a much harder decision. I don't want a zoom.
That wasn't a fair shutter noise comparison, as it was quite obvious that the shutter speed of the Panasonic was much slower, due to the slower lens attached.
@mastroiani001 - I would imagine for street photo when you want to be most inconspicuous. I've seen a lot of street photogs around here who do that to their SLRs.
both the GF1 and E-P2 are more expensive than basic DSLRs, which puts beginners like me in confusion - should my first DSLR be a normal size one say, sony A230 or nikon D3000 or the smaller mirrorless ones :(
You should try some of the old film cameras like FM2/FE2 or FM3a. They are smaller than dslr's and the so called "full frame" too. And quiet..... and no shutter lag and MUCH easier focusing due to the ground glass and split prism. And always accurate as it is you that focuses and not the fuzzy logic IC in the camera.
hey mike24p...which camera is better in both picture quality and video....is the image stabilization a problem for the gf1 when recording video..please reply..thanks..
I read a rumor that the GH2 will have no shutter, therefore no noise. Supposedly Panasonic has created a new sensor where they can do away with the shutter and it won't overheat.. Guess we will have to wait and see. Anyway, thanks for the review.
Maybe I'm missing something, but how are you using the Siggy 50mm f/1.4? As it has no aperture ring, do you only have the option of shooting stopped down and that's it? Or is there some other way of changing the aperture value within the Panny's menus?
you are right, canon lenses, you will only be able to use it wide open, manual nikon lenses, or zeiss lenses in nikon mount, you can choose the aperture
just wondering about the tape you have on the 7d, whats it for? and also would you recommend the the d7 or is there something else similar that is better?
The micro four thirds cameras doesnt have a mirror going up and down when taking a picture so the noise you hear should be from a loudspeaker in the camera and you should be able to turn it of try looking in the menus

Yes you are right the GF1 has a much louder shutter but also the Olympus is very noisy, which it disappoint me very much.
Now I am more confused on my next purchase.
Which is the most silent mirrorless on the market for street photography ?

Very useful, thanks. Shame that the shutter releases are pretty loud, puts me off both cameras slightly.

love the image stabilitation, hard to tell they are both excellent, if video is a priority, go with the gh1 - has the best video quality

That's not true, the noise is real and cannot be turned off. It's true they have no mirror, but the noise comes from shutter curtains
