ladies dont make us black men out to be bad, maybe thats how things were back in those days (refering to the movie) but thing have changed quite a bit. nobody ever talks about black women degrading the black community, by rejecting nappy hair and buying hair from other ethnicities thats degrading your own, and nowadays nobody is going to force you to have sex with them so why are there still a lot of pregnant black girls. you dont have to keep on selling your pussies on the streets.
how dare you!!!! Damn the fucking lady donates so much of her fucking money to help others. I guess because she tried to help the girl in africa and someone else fucked it up its her fault!!! Obama is the one signing off on all the unemployment ext. so go to the people that should have stopped getting it after 26 wks and tell them what you just said!!!
it tells a story of the empowering of one whose been abused, misjudged and rejected, yet has endured and found her inner beauty and strength , she never knew she had: the black woman
im a filipino, a brown race. this movie breaks my heart. it just that this is the only time i understand what the movie wants to say, in me, to us. and i want to keep it to myself. its really a great movie of all time, just like ' HIMALA' the CNN's best asian movie of all time. i hope guys that you will be able to find a copy of HIMALA, the Philippine superstar Ms. Nora Aunor in it.
BRAVO STEVEN!!! BRAVO for the WRITTERS!!! THE NATURAL ACTING OF ALL THE ACTORS!!!! I REALLY LOVE THIS.......
There was an actress in it called lillian njoki distefano. Might she be related to Giuseppe Di Stefano, the opera singer who lived in Africa the last years of his life???
When I went through a religious program, I graduated and moved into a beautiful house in Dania Beach Florida. Outside of the home right by the front door there was a group of purple flowers that was a gift from God to me letting me know that he was very proud of me. Purple Flowers are my Favorite.
No, not vain. He wants to enjoy the good things like us. I believe that God is angry when you, in front of the color purple in a field of flowers, you will not even notice.
I know of a grown Marine who cries during this movie everytime it comes on and he is red as a neck. That says a lot about this movie. It is really good. But from watching this movie, I've decided that Oprah is still as ugly.
To be honest..the movie was so much better...why make a musical of it? The message would get lost...The movie was deep and honest and dark...how can a musical portray that?
love this and i think the quote from shug avery...(when you pass by the color purple and dont it pisses god off if you take notice)....its one of my favorite quotes....I live my life by it...I always notice the color purple.....sammiez
For a great read check out "A Step Into Deliverance" by T. Pugh. It's a riveting autobiography about one man's journey into the deliverance. A real page-turner.
The book is not about a black comunity, it's about a family, in particular Celie's family and friends. Are you saying that the things that happened in the color purple never could have happened in real life? Answer that for me
Is that the best way to protray a Black community??? To make the entire community look like a complete dysfunctional unit?? I'm sorry , but I think our ancestors deserve a better view of their history..
Awful film , awful book , awful play...Nothing but a story about a completely dysfunctional Black community...Why do we need to have this as an image of our life..???
The story is so much more than that. What makes it so special for people is probably the story about a strong woman who breaks through all her obstacles. Everyone has the right to an opinion though, but what I can't understand is why you after reading an awful book both saw the film and the musical!
are you serious. you think this movie displays black people in a negative light i think the story trancends race it's about the human condition surviving in the worst of situations coming to terms with life wow you suck!!!!!!!!!!!

I didn't like the movie , the book , or the play..To me it was nothing but a ranting of a lesbain that has stated her dislike for Blackmen..I notice how easy you turn to angry when a viewpoint is different then yours...Guess "the color purple" rubbed off on you..
lol im not angry and since you read the book you know she's not a lesbian i don't think the movie was about "hating black men" you haven't even seen the entire movie and since you read the book you know that in the end her and mister end up starting a new relationship your argument is without merit...but there weren't any positive black male figures in the movie but no one ever stated "i hate black men" never happend

How do you know Alice Walker's not a lesbian...?? Do you live with her..?? The fact of the matter is would you want your son , husband , father , brother to be anything like the men in this book/film/play..?? And yes , you can to me with anger ..I wonder were that comes from when someone mentions this book/film/play to you..Don't you think we as a people can tell a better story about ourselves then this...???
You all got the right to comment on this film, but if you are going to argue you can do it somewhere else. The fact is that our taste is different, some like this movie and some don't. We simply see and feel different things when we watch it, so just leave it there please.
Is this depiction of us as black people an embarrassment to you? I've seen much worse-look at some of these rap videos they have out today. LOL. I agree with stephsmithanie-the movie transcends racial lines. If you've ever seen the Good Luck Club-these women of Asian descent went through a lot of what happened in the Color Purple. And, Alice Walker is married.

You're right , to praise a film , a play , or a book that protrays an entire Black community as totally dysfunctional is the dumbest s**t I've heard in my life as well. We as a people DESERVE better.
You missed the whole point of this novel (if you even read it). I feel so sorry for you. The Color Purple is a story of a woman finding her place in this world and being at peace with it.

I didn't miss anything, the story revolves around a completely dysfunctional Black community..Now that's my opionion , if you can't deal with that then that's your probelm.
No my child , I'm just realistic and I don't get blinded by the fantasy world nonsense that this film/book/play is about...It's my opinion so grow up and get over it...
It's my opinion that you ARE ignorant, so you grow up and get over that, you fail to realize that this book is not about a portrayal of an entire black community as being dysfunctional, it is about a BLACK WOMAN's struggle during the early 1900's and her ability to overcome what she has been through . The attitudes and events in this movie are very real....fantasy world..... I think NOT
Then why is the entire Black community in the book/movie/play completely dysfunctional..??? And by the way , not all Black communities from the early 1900s lived with these primative attitudes toward life and family...Some people , like possilbly a few of your relatives , actually lived peacefully and thrived as a people...Guess you would have to think a little to understand that...It's not too late....:)
The story is absolutley so much more than the way you described it as'dysfanctional black community'. I suppose you see what you want to see in the story. I see strong women,I see a lot of courage and believing in one's self. I learnt a lot from it!! I loved the movie. Can't wait to see the broadway show soon. Thats what I think!!
"The Color Purple" is the first movie I recall watching, and I'm proud to say that even to this day it is still my favorite film. The film is moving and inspiring at the same time. Thanks so much for adding it, I'll make sure to buy the soundtrack because the music is just great.
