WOW!!!! Gene had Jimmie's voice mastered so well he could have stayed with it as far as I'm concerned but he went on into Movies and developed his own style and sound and I loved it "Gene Autry ( The Singing Cowboy)" And became my Cowboy Hero ahead of Roy Rogers ( Of course No one can ever take the place of Jimmie Rodgers) Now, All My Hero's are gone Including The One and Only" MAN in BLACK" Johnny Cash!!!! .....Ray Rogers !!!!!
@74XLR No; this recording is from 1929, when Gene was only 22 years old. His voice hadn't deepened yet to the level we're more familiar with. Try searching for the CD, "Gene Autry, Blues Singer," and you can hear him singing 23 different country blues songs from the 1929-31 era.
Gene Autry started his singing career as a Jimmy Rodgers imitator and an album is available that contains these efforts. I don't really care much for them. Fortunately Autry went on to his real style of singing.
Reminds me of Jimmy Rodgers' version. I saw most of Gene's movies as a youngster, but don't recall him singing this song. Seems like only yesterday when Dad would ask me, Let's go see old Gene. We never missed a Gene Autry movie; all were good. Will never forget him singing "silver hair Daddy of mine", while in the saddle of one particular movie. It was great.
@rockwitme1 I recall buying an old 45 record as a child with "Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine" on one side and, I think, "Back In the Saddle Again" on the other. My grandfather had died recently, and Mom made me quit playing "Silver-Haired Daddy;" said it made her lonesome for her dad.
Good stuff.
