the sliding thing is just as much bullcrap. The only way to know is to try both. I board Regular stance but I skid on my right foot. I knew, because I used to skateboard before I snowboarded. My snowboard instructer said the same thing as you but it felt wrong to me and I sticked with my reg stance. Ignore the pushing or skidding crap just try both when your pushing your board on a flat.

Another way to figure out your stance is if you can try a skateboard out. I used to skate a bit and so I know my stance as regular, but if you can borrow a skateboard from a friend, or even just buy the cheapest premade board in kmart for $20 or something then try it out. That way when you hit the slopes you are already set.
