Consider that most politicians graduate from law school. A lawyer doesn't act on principal, but supports the side that bought him/her. They argue a case, even if they know that their side is wrong. At that point, they just lie. I'm not saying all politicians are this way, but it appears to be a lot of them.

I think why balance between the two works is because if one gets too strong, then you practically have just choice A and not A and B. A problem with a third party, is that if it leans left or right, then the less desirable candidate can get elected because the other two have their voters split. All reliable estimates from real journalists who were there (This excludes Beck and Faux News) estimate the 9-12 Teabagger crowd at no more than 80,000.
